In this video I go through and rank every chapter in Bug Fables from worst to best! Of course, every chapter in this game is fantastic, in my opinion, but some are definitely better than others. I'm sure people will have different thoughts on what the best chapter is so be sure to let me know which chapter you think is best down in the comments!

PS: As a little side note, the initial attack of the wasps technically happens in chapter 4, despite me including it in Chapter 5. I guess it just felt like the arrival of Zasp felt like the start of Chapter 5 to me so I decided to include it. Regardless, it probably wouldn't have changed the order of my list.

Chapter 7's music and atmosphere upon first entering the Deadlands gave me a feeling in gaming I don't think I've ever felt before. The whole game is great, but golly does the last chapter stand out for me. Literally everyone was terrified and weren't sure they were gonna make it out, the fearsome beasts, bro it was so GREAT lmaooo. Can't wait to see what Moonsprout releases next!

The idea of having giant eyeball monsters casually dropping hideous creatures on you presumably just for the pleasure of seeing you fight to the death is so terrifying. It really captures the feeling of being used as a plaything of someone with unlimited power and no empathy beyond casual sadism. For the first time in the game, you feel like an ant under a child’s sun-amplifying magnifying glass. Kabbu remarks on this, a reminder of how sublimely self-aware this game’s writing is.

      @AceTechn0 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That area was genuinely disturbing, first time I got there I was like “okay, big eyeball dude, but my team is pretty strong so I can fight him,” the SECOND that “???” song started playing I RAN FOR MY LIFE. I did come back and fight it again so I could Spy it, but once I saw that ALL of the team are considering running away rather than fighting, and the fact that they have 40 HEALTH on Hard Mode, made me not fight ANY of the dead lander variants (until it literally forces you to fight them with Maki)

I disagree with you about the start of Chapter 7. It's supposed to be barren. The whole idea is that it's like an almost apocalyptic place devoid of all life, save for the disturbing creatures responsible for that.

I will say that Chapter 4 was a bit frustrating when I needed to find the keys to the castle, but I think the final chapter could have had a better spot on the list. It really is difficult ranking them all though because they are all nearly the same in quality, which is to say they are all great.
My fascination with the final chapter is with the deadlanders and what they could spell for future entries in the series. There are so many things that could be explored with those mysterious beings, especially the giant one with the haunting gaze. I was really thrilled and properly spooked when I needed to traverse through the dark lair past that fearsome beast. (And yes, the final boss was definitely a thrill and a challenge. I beat it to the skin of my teeth.)

Chapter 6 also serves as my fav for the good deed quest, it's entirely optional but doing it shows you how much Kabbu's grown with the dialogue that comes with it, which makes up for the fact that I wasted the reward I got in chapter 1 on the plushie just to see if it would do something at some point.

  • @portorolla4157
    @portorolla4157 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    Great ranking! Here is mine.
    7) Chapter 1: It’s a short tutorial. Not a bad tutorial, it’s just a... tutorial.
    6) Chapter 7: It’s very short but still provides a good ending.
    5) Chapter 4: Defiant Root and the castle were fun to explore, but that’s it. The bandits hideout just seemed a way to increase how long the chapter was. And the Lost Sands is far from my favorite area.
    4) Chapter 2: It had some original puzzles with the beemerang which, although fun, was tough to control. As good as Bug Fables is, it's biggest failure is aiming and this chapter was full of it. It managed to get a bit repetitive towards the end, but the closing boss fight with Venus made it all worthwhile.
    3) Chapter 3: The bee kingdom was energetic, full of life and brand new NPC's. Vi's backstory is obviously the weakest of the three, but it's mostly revealed here nonetheless. I felt the lockdown could've been better, but the entire section as a whole was worth exploring. We also got a fun Honey boss!
2: Chapter 5: This chapter was probably the most aesthetically pleasing of them all, but that could be me and my knack for jungle-themed areas in game. A lot of the enemies here are some of my favorites design-wise, and Maki's inclusion in the story and the team felt like a nice breath of fresh air from the overused artifact-hunting that was blatantly used in the last four chapters. Kabbu's backstory didn't have much depth, but seeing a new side of him that we've never seen before was a great change of pace as well. It's something Bug Fables did really well, character development.
1: Chapter 6: Undoubtedly the biggest chapter in the game. You start out in the forsaken lands, filled with plenty of enemies and a sense of awry. Vi learns how to fly, which opens up tons of new areas that were previously impossible to get too. Once you exit that section, you arrive in the Termite Kingdom, with in my opinion, the best soundtrack in the entire game. It's also a fairly big kingdom as well, with plenty of side quests and mini-games to keep you interested. You unlock the sub at the end of this section, which gives you access to different islands, including the most prominent one, Metal Island. The Rubber Prison is the last section of this chapter, which isn't filled with any new enemies, but still provides plenty of puzzles, and the sense of discomfort knowing the story is about to be over. In all, this chapter was the best for me because of not only how much is given, but how much is acquired because of the map being complete.

Both paper mario and bug fables divide their chapters into various "acts", which I always thought was dope.
    Just as a small example:
pm64 chapter 2: 1) Mt Rugged, 2) Dry Dry Desert, 3) Dry Dry Ruins
ttyd chapter 2: 1) Boggly Woods, 2) The Great Tree
Bug Fables chapter 2: 1) Golden Path, 2) Golden Hills
imo the best "act" of all these games combined is the first half of Chapter 7 of Bug Fables.

Chapter 6 has probably my best moment in it: The last duel with Mothiva and Zasp. The first time, outside of the Beast, that you hear Kabu actually lose it, the sheer arrogance of Mothiva, the desperation in both sides to win for different reasons.

  • @GardenVarietea

Honestly, I feel like Chapter 7 doesn't quite need a longer Giant's Lair (though, more things could be added there for lore purposes), but instead, could incorporate the Snakemouth Lab.
-Upon reaching the pulley system after scaling the icy prison (fridge), they come across a manmade lake, formed from a crack in the ground and a leak in the ceiling. The bridge to the other side has been broken. It is here that Leif learns his final skill: Ice Rain. He uses this to hop across the lake and reach the Roach Village.
-The path is long and hazardous, though the Wasp King has already ventured past there and blocked the way, forcing his pursuers to be stuck in the Roach Village.
-The Roach Elder does not listen to Team Snakemouth & Elizant II. However, the team are told of a roach lab in Snakemouth, and go there to prove Elizant's point of destroying the sapling for good. This ties Snakemouth Labs into the chapter - may not be ideal for some, but I think it is very fitting to the theme of the chapter, fills out the story of not only the roaches but Leif as well. The only change I'd make to the Snakemouth Lab for this conceptual tweak to Chapter 7 to work well is to place a long water-filled area in front of the pedestal that opens Snakemouth Labs, with another snapped bridge, indicating that Leif has to use Ice Rain to hop across. This not only lets you see the end goal but not be able to reach it should you explore Snakemouth again prior to Chapter 7, but also lets you tie things into the roach theme, having you use the Musterious Gem right at that moment.
-After returning, the Roach Elder listens, and allows you to break the barrier (one that requires all 3 members to break) and pursue the Wasp King. It's here you realize the destruction he's caused, and follow him to the Everlasting Sapling.
It probably wouldn't help all that much, but I feel like it'd make the chapter even more memorable to place Snakemouth Labs in with the Giant's Lair and make those the two main focuses of the chapter.

    • @SweetTop7s
      @SweetTop7s 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I agree with incorporating Snakemouth Lab into Chapter 7, except I would've placed it before you can even enter Giant's Lair. I just feel like Giant's Lair itself is too unique and challenging to not be the very last area of the game.
My idea would be that after defeating ULTIMAX Tank, instead of Queen Vanessa handing you the Flame Brooch right then and there, she will say that she's been doing research with Neo regarding the Wasp King's incredible fire magic, and deducts that the power comes from the Ancient Crown he's wearing, another artifact from the roaches. The only known way to counter that magic is another artifact the roaches created, the Flame Brooch, which they deducted is located in Snakemouth (perhaps it could be foreshadowed by occasional comments from Leif that he still senses magic from Snakemouth even after the first artifact is found). You won't be allowed to enter Giant's Lair until the Flame Brooch is obtained, since they now know fighting the Wasp King without it would be suicide.
They then go back to Snakemouth and behind that door to Snakemouth Lab, and like you said add a long water-filled area in front of the pedestal so you can't access it early (Leif will learn Ice Rain here instead to cross it). After obtaining the Flame Brooch (Leif finding the truth about himself while they do so) then you can enter Giant's Lair.

    Hum... let's go then.
7)Chapter 4: Not only do you discover very few new areas, I also got frustrated when I tried seaching for the key to the sand castle. Ironically, the bandit hideout half wasn't the problem, it was finding the half hidden in the other side of the lost sands. I kept searching for an access to those areas via the rest of the lost sands, not realizing that the entrances were in defiant root and golden settlement.
6)Chapter 1: A fine introduction, but I do wish we spent less time in dark areas. Snakemouth gets boring after a while.
5)Chapter 5:Yes, for real. First, I went to snakemouth lab just before that, so the leafbugs weren't that strong at all, and that's when bug me not didn't insta-kill them in the overworld. Second, maybe it's partly because I played in normal mode, but the beast was pathetic. It did almost not damage, then right after I used the frozen drill, which in theory should have killed him, he gets some hp back, does exacly 99 damage suddendly and kills Vi and Leif. The whole fight just felt way too much like a video game for me to really appreciate it. Third, I got stuck for 20 minutes in the stealth section because of a bug(pun intented).
4)Chapter 7: The lack of save points, the creepy ambience made this final bit really distinct. They went for something completely different with this, and I can appreciate it. The final boss was awesome-I did not expect him to heal twice during the final phase! Sadly, the giant's lair is a bit short and recycle ennemies, like you said.
3)Chapter 2:That's really when the game clicked for me. The combat is well done and all in this game, but still, it's an rpg and that tends to bore me. This chapter showed me the other big strenght of this game:it's world. You really get to met so many new people, discover so many new places, it's beautiful. The festival is particulary charming.
2)Chapter 3:It's basically perfect, really, but it's not as long and epic as number 1, so that's why it's number 2.
1)Chapter 6:This chapter alone probably takes like 1/4 of the main story.

I would change a few things, putting chapter 1 as last place and having chapter 4 a bit higher because I love the idea of going back to explore more of an area I’m familiar with to find something new. The final chapter is my second favourite with the lore surrounding the area and the general mood being so.. depressing! My favourite chapter is chapter 6

  • @wileecoyotegenius5955

    My ranking:
    7. Chapter 1 - It's the start of an RPG, which is never very interesting. Easy enemies, mundane environments, and a pretty slow story. Still, it's the buildup for good things to come.
    6. Chapter 2 - I thought the puzzles in this area were kind of annoying. It was a very slow chapter with a lot of platforming. The festival was cool however,
    5. Chapter 4 - The sandcastle was awesome with great puzzles and music, the bandits lair on the other hand was a bit dull. Bug Fables overall has way too many stealth sections.
    4. Chapter 3 - I always found the Lost Sands to be kind of annoying, but The Hive makes this chapter for me. I love the classy atmosphere, and the technological atmosphere of The Factory was also great, though the enemies within were annoying to fight.
    3. Chapter 5 - This is when the game really starts getting intense. The Wild Swamplands is the first location in the game that feels genuinely dangerous and oppressive. The Wasp Kingdom sadly felt a little underdeveloped, but everything else about this chapter makes up for it.
    2. Chapter 7 - An unpopular opinion, but I loved this chapter, mainly because of how cool the Dead Lands were. Everything about that area was terrifying not just in atmosphere but also in the gameplay as being seen had much more dire consequences than other stealth sections. It was a bit barren and reused enemies, but the atmosphere alone made me love it.
    1. Chapter 6 - This chapter is the best and it's not even close. There is so much going on in this chapter. The melancholy atmosphere of the Forsaken Lands was a wonderful change of pace from the livelier environments prior in the game. Then, the Termite Kingdom was a huge surprise for me. A modern city with neon lights and skyscrapers was the last thing I expected from the mostly low-tech fantasy world of Bug Fables, and again, the somber, lonely atmosphere drew me in. Then you had the coliseum, which was a bit short but still cool, and then you cap it off with a submarine ride and a huge, difficult dungeon. This chapter honestly feels like two chapters in one it has so much content, and on top of that the Forsaken Lands and Termite Kingdom may be my two favorite areas in the game. This was the moment I knew this game was something special.

These comments are very divided on their rankings. Some people have the first chapter at last place, and some love it. Some people are annoyed with chapter 4, while others have it near the top.
Some people say they nearly quit the game, getting annoyed with chapter 2. And meanwhile some people, like you, loved it quite a bit.
And, I guess this is a hood thing.
The fact that, other than chapter 6, there is no real common consesus on the "best" or "worst" chapters shows that the game is consistently good throughout

I don't think I'd argue that it deserves a higher position, but I feel like Chapter 7 isn't getting as much credit as it deserves. The game has been building up certain expectations for the fun and charming world you've been exploring, and the finale hits you with an abandoned human house where no bug dares to walk, filled with horrifying abominations that *the game itself* keeps telling you that there's no shame to run from. The added eerie Dead Lander Ω stalking your every move in the first section was just icing on the truly horrifying cake.
Yeah, it's the kind of thing that would be stressful on repeat playthroughs, when you know how short it is and how to deal with the Dead Landers, but the initial reaction it tends to give is not to be overlooked. The sheer sence of dread it gives you to be told by the LITERAL GOD you've befriended that you're heading into a place that even she can't reach, to seeing a giant eye searching for prey, to not really having background music, it creates a feeling unlike anything I've felt before. I usually hate horror in games, yet I was enjoying every dread-filled second of the chapter. Add in several huge story reveals, one of, if not the BEST boss fights in the game, all the while somehow leaving you with more questions than answers. It loses most of this shine once you know what's going to happen, but it's still far from a bad chapter. Short, sure. Empty? Yeah, that's the point. It may be a weaker entry, but it's good at what it's trying to accomplish.
I had a lot of fun accidentally finding a speedrun strat and figuring out how to successfully freeze the Dead Landers, and it's one of my favorite chapters. Not my TOP favorite, but it deserves a bit more credit.
The freezer area kinda sucks though. It just feels like the Sand Castle ice puzzles part 2, without the fun of toggling the switches. No new enemies either. The ice block puzzles felt disappointingly generic in chapter 4, they didn't really need an encore.

You should REALLY change the thumbnail, if someone was scrolling through TH-cam recommended and saw this video's thumbnail they would be spoiled on who the final boss is/looks like, and could probably even piece together what happens given the appearence.

My only critique for the last chapter is that I wish it was longer! Hope it gets expanded on in the sequel (whenever that comes out).
Edit: Also I consider chapter 4 as the prequel to Lief’s request. I feel Lief’s request feels more like a chapter than just a side quest.

This is exactly how I would’ve ranked the chapters on my list. Except I would’ve swapped Chapter 5 and Chapter 2, but they’re pretty close either way
Chapter 4 does have my favorite boss in the whole game, Astotheles, but the rest of it is just so baffling and hard to navigate that it brought the whole thing down.

chapter 2 honestly killed my excitement for the game the first time i played it. golden path is infuriatingly slow to traverse when you're still learning how to throw the beemarang and golden hills is even worse.
thank god i picked the game back up a few months later because it's consistently much better after that point

My least favorite chapter was chapter 3. For one simple reason. Any Ruigee playthrough. You cant get out of the factory to level up, and you havent unlocked many badges. If you dont have many levels or badges going into chapter 3, your run is over

didn't start watching the video yet, I will later. But here is my ranking currently:
    1. chapter 5 (trauma = good story am I right?)
    2. chapter 3 (bees)
    3. chapter 4 (just a really good chapter, not much to say here)
    4. chapter 7 (I don't really like the dead lands, but the concept behind it is really good. It's just so cool to realise you're in an actual human house)
    5. chapter 1 (I don't think that this does a really good job at setting how fun the game is. This is one of the most boring chapters and makes the game seem a little simple and boring. Of course you have to start simple, but chapter 2 makes it seem even simpler and I don't really like that very much)
    6. chapter 2 (this chapter is really slow and samey)
    7. chapter 6 (the fun parts of this chapter are good, but the forsaken lands is just not a fun place to be in. And the rubber prison's main puzzle is probably my least favorite main puzzle in the game)

nice list, but I would like to respectfully disagree with the rankings of chapters 2 and 7.
For chapter 2, I feel that it's really lacking gameplay-wise. As one of the major aspects of this game that I really like is the freedom to play how you want to, especially in-battle with how many different possible builds exist in the game. However, in chapter 2 the game gives you hardly any strategy-defining medals (off the top of my head I can only remember favorite one and a couple decently helpful defensive medals). Especially in harder difficulties, the minibosses feel more frustrating than fun and the diversity in strategy is minimal. Now, I know that I've talked a lot about gameplay but I also feel that the story is slightly lacking. Venus and aria don't really feel like compelling characters until after the chapter when they're developed more via sidequests and other minor interactions. It's mostly the area and atmosphere that makes the chapter good but it just feels a little hollow without too much else going for it.
For chapter 7, I really liked how the game treated the player in regards to it's difficulty where it basically says "alright, you should have all the tools you need to make a fully developed build, let's see how well it does :)" and throws some of the most difficult enemies in any RPG I've seen right at you (relative to the rest of the game, anyway). One would think the game had already used the "ooooh we're going to some super dangerous land that nobody survives in" and after the forsaken lands you're probably thinking "tch, yeah right" until you meet your first dead lander, and you see that they're as strong (if not stronger) than many of the minibosses you've fought in the past. Aside from the difficulty, the dead lands offer a lot of worldbuilding in regards to the mysterious giants and why bugaria is just some backyard without much outside interaction, along with the already mentioned discovery of a roach village and seeing the real extent of the cruelty of the wasp king. I also thought the puzzles and general exploration was done well, with having to avoid the gaze of the incredibly intimidating dead lander omega, lest you be forced into a battle with a *single* dead lander gamma which are, you know, regular enemies as hard as minibosses.

I feel like chapter 7 is the "worse" chapter.
I love the atmosphere but it leaves much to be desired, i kinda wish you could explore the whole house rather than what i think would assume the kitchen, like Maze rather than be straight forward to further add creepiness.
The Dead landers never get explored outside a few mentions on the lore books and also that eye that patrols the area (could of been a boss fight of the chapter with Wasp King being THE final boss)
Also the Dead landers i believe were originally going to be 3D models to looks even creepier.
It also doesn't help the fact that i was max level meaning i didn't force myself to fight any enemies (except the new ones for spy information) so i kinda breezed through the chapter.

This might be a little too late, but in the library, there's a bookshelf you can interact with that has an empty space. You should have 4 books, put them in the shelf in order so it makes the story from the intro of the game. The bookshelf should open and give you a wooden crank.

I disagree with what you said about Chapter 7. Giant’s Lair first off is supposed to be barren because as established in earlier chapters it’s basically a No Man’s Land that is believed to be devoid of life. The enemies in the fridge I think were reused ones because the game was about to introduce to their fire variants, so they gave us a quick refresher course on how they function. Chapter 7 is one of the best chapters for its atmosphere and overall epic climax.

I'd personally put Chapter 7 at the bottom of the list. It's just underwhelming. You keep hearing "It's super dangerous and forbidden", and while the deadlanders are pretty deadly, everything about the whole chapter just feels... bland. The Giant's Lair is a cool idea, but it's not worked to it's full potential, and it's music is just downright bad. I'd say it's easily the game's lowest point, which isn't saying much since it's still pretty good. It's an alright chapter, but not a good *final* chapter. No minibosses, no new mechanics, only three new enemies... it's a pretty weak finish to an incredible game.
