    Excellent video and good explanation and you are right when we ask someone to do something for us. We have to do it in a polite way. WOULD YOU MIND + VERB IN ING-FORM is the structure we have to use with this expression. Whenever I explain this structure to my students I Explain them the ing-form after this expression. Thank you very much for all your wonderful videos that are helping a lot of students around the world.

    Hi Becca thanks for the video,another important polite request I would like to mention is, I lived in Wales for many years and people in here prefer to say : ''Can I have a cup of Latte please'' when they ordering in the coffee shops whereas when I went to London, people rather say : ''I want a cup of latte'' which is not wrong but... :)

    I have a friend who never asks in a question form. He always says, "I need you to...." when he wants help with anything. Like he's ordering people to do what he wants instead of asking them if they would do it for him. Of course I always reject his request for help since I really don't like being bossed around. Oh, and he's one of those types that always shows up at my house unannounced and uninvited like every week. In the 40 years since I've known him, I've never asked him for any favors or help with anything, but just about every time he visits me, he always wants help with something.

    • @simonsez464
      @simonsez464 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's the difference between making a request and asking permission. "May" is used when someone wants to do something but they need another person's permission. "May I open the window?" > "Yes, you may." or "Would you mind if I opened the window?" > "No (I wouldn't), go ahead." or "Would it be OK if I opened the window?"> "Sure, go ahead."
