Hello Ruth. I lived in SA during the 1980s. You have more variety of food than we used to take. My bag used to be around 18kg at the start of a 4 or 5 day trial. Of course there were those occasions when I would discover a stone in the bag at the end of a hike. Glad to see how enthusiastic you are about hiking in South Africa. It really has some magnificent hiking trails 😀
That’s a very good 4 day food supply. I would need something more substantial for lunch though. Pity South Africa does not have a wider choice of foil packed wet meat options besides tuna. In America they have tuna, salmon, chicken, beef, venison and turkey options. They are perfect for hiking, keeping weight to a minimum. The instant mielie pap option is brilliant! For breakfast, maybe add variety by packing in some pronutro with powdered milk in a zip lock bag for two of the four days? Brilliant overall though 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Hey I liked that reorganization of your food Ruth. Thanks for the Biltong tip - they're on UK Amazon. Very neat and purposeful. All the best out there. Mark
Thanks! I bought most of the food in this video from Pick n Pay, my local grocery store. A few items (like the wasabi peas) came from a small local Asian store. I also sometimes buy pre-made meals from Forever Fresh South Africa or Mama Alles, but those are more expensive.
Hi, I live in South Africa and would like to know where you can get the packets of tuna? I have only seen the tins, unless I am looking in the wrong place.
Hi Stefan. John West makes a packet version, which I think I last bought at Pick n Pay, and Woolworths makes Woolworths brand one. Usually in the same isle as the tins.

Thank you, Christopher! I think I probably wouldn't even be able to lift an 18kg bag, ha ha ha! I'll have to work up to that weight slowly I think ;)
This is beautiful. Thanks for sharing Ruth. Much appreciated. 🙂

Yeah, I've seen a lot of tuna and salmon in foil, but not much else.
Thank you! Your videos are really informative.
Thanks Stephanie!
