A city is such a huge agglomeration of people. But they need not be a faceless and anonymous entity but living breathing, individuals, with feelings and emotions as much as any small town. This is perhaps what Art means when he says the city has a heart! Actually many hearts!
I first heard this song performed by Art Garfunkel at the Simon and Garfunkel Concert (Sept 1981) in Central Park, which was finally broadcast on TV in the UK in Summer 1982. It seemed to sum up and evoke everything that New York was about and stood for. A place I have never visited and yet, appreciate from the great songs and performers there. I believe this Art Garfunkel song is close to being my favourite, although somehow 'Looking For The Right One' is still just edging it!
