I worked for over 15 years in the plastics molding department at GE back in the 80’s and 90’s. I was the setup and can’t count the number of installs in did during that time. We did injection and thermoset molding. This video brought back memories from back in the day. Some of the equipment was from the 1940’s while most of our equipment was state of the art, modern presses. It was nice to see the advancements in equipment that have been made since our factory closed.
Good videos . I was a Machine setter before, and I do have some comments and points to add. 1.) I suggest you add a leveling tool to ensure the mold is properly leveled before closing the mold. because you might close it unlevelled. 2.) I Don't remove the chain block support even though you have fully clamped on the fixed side. There are times that a mold setter have not fully tightened the brackets on one side and the mold droops or worst fall. I removed it when both A&B sides are bolted on the platen. If one of the A/B loose support or fall from plates, it will hang to the other half. 3.) Remember to put hard hats when moving molds overhead. sometimes eyebolts clips breakout or not fully locked.
Good work! I recommend visiting a plastic injection molding company and observ a quick and safe tool change. It will definitely make your work easier and faster. But, job well done.
I noticed you said you don't really have to run water through the molds.. does this cause zebra striping for you or ghalling of the tool? Having them watered can help you choose where you want the parts to stay as well and help with the flow of the plastic and the cooling process to be shorter. What do I know, I'm just a mold setter.
That is true for Aluminum molds, that conduct heat 4 time better then steel. For steel molds, I do run water, or oil to remove hot spots in cores, and heat the mold up. Haven't had much problem with zebra striping. Thanks for watching!
@@DragonflyEngineeringlol how rich is your wife!? I refurbish injection moulding machines in the UK. STV Machinery. We work on all brands of machines. I was a setter for 16 years also
That is a clever trick with the integrated tunnel gate cutting. 👍. Would a tapered hole for the tunnel gate help reduce the chance of the center stem getting stuck?
DME makes a pneumatic coupler for center knock outs. they are a bit pricey but it will save you lots of swearing. also bump the nozzle back and forth a couple times to get the stuck sprue loose.
Hello, I'm from Ethiopia. I learned a lot from the video. One thing that I couldn't fix or had trouble with is when it opens the mold. How can I fix it? Thank you.
I have made a few improvements since then. There are some wuick change schemes if you have a mass production setup and spend the time and money. My setup is more short run prototype and small production. Thanks for watching!
There is a hemispheric nozzle that mates with a mating round surface on the mold sprue port, the plastic port is in the middle of the molding machine round nozzle. The injection unit pushes the nozzle onto the round receiver with -1000 lbs of force to make a seal
Using this ejector extension rod means rotational table cant rotate right? Sprue stuck you might be can reduce gate seal time or make undercut pin to pullout runner
I'm work for making exterior parts of the car of hyundai in S.korea . I'm usually operate 2000 ton - 3200 ton machine. (LS emtron) we make most exterior body pannel, Fender side, rear trunk , tail gate door pannel. (ABS, PC+ABS, PC ASA, PC+PET) How about using HAITIAN ?? Does it work with precision? I used the same machine 5 years ago. BUT ..............................................
You take off the strap and crane before u close B half of mold....i make sure all 4 bolts are in bedore i take crane away just a safety with me but to each it own...also u dont use a level as well..
Amazing work as always served part of my Apprenticeship in the mold shop here in the uk…you need a bigger shop looks like a right nightmare chaining loading and clamping…not easy for 1 man with a manual crane as well…respect
The guys who have been there have already made most of the possible mistakes, so listen to them and watch how they do things because they do it a certain way based on their past hard lessons. Take you time and think twice befor you hit any controller buttons. "what can go wrong with this set up or button I am about to push." Good luck!
Why wouldn’t you just bolt the insulator plates to the mold. I would be afraid that that ejector rod would snap when running. Then finally why wouldn’t you torque those toe clamps in.
I have some that are oversized insultators to bolt to the molding machine, but I have so many variations of molds, that I usually block mounting holes, or need the ones that bolt the insulator, so I keep them simple. I save $ by not making insulators for all the molds. I also have universal shim plates to get the 2 mold stacks the same height. Yes, as i mentioned I get away with the 1/2 inch rod for light force eject molds. I have 1.5" dia ejector rods that came with the machine too. finally, i don't have a torque wrench :( But I should get one. Thanks for watching!
So much I've seen wrong, can't watch anymore! you sir be safe, and you need to clean your shop. I have fired employees for leaving less of a mess! And for gods sake, get a safety panel over that control panel with all the exposed wires!
Nice shop, nice equipment, however the most backward thinking on molding I have ever heard. 40+ years in the business and never heard so much crap that I have heard on your channel.

Beings back memories 30. Years in plastic molding good fun
yea, with dirty black grease and hydraulic fluids.. loud humming machines and the smell of hot plastic.
I recommend using protective plastic rings on the cylinders. One ding from a mold near the seal could make the hydraulic cylinder leak oil.
so glad you included the swearing parts.. your machine sure is clean..
Yep, part of the job. Thanks for watching!

Thanks, the center runner hole is tapered, but sometime a rivet head of plastic on the nozzle side causes it to be stuck. Thanks for watching

why screwing back was slow back pressure. enjoying this
Why not use a locking coupler on ejector rod?
It's hard to believe there is no better plug&play system for changing molds to be honest. Seems to be quite a struggle each time around....

Pretty cool video. Custom sprue Wacker lol
What does the connection between the mold and the plastic injection screw look like?
Is there any "plumbing"?

Yes, that is correct, 2 shot molds need a spring ejector return
What are the equations used in machine settings?
Not much practical equation use, it is all experience in my case. Thanks for watching
Can a two shot be used to run non two shot jobs without creating a lot of deflection that would result in flash?
@@phillipalexius480 yes, the 2 molds need to be the same height, you can turn off the rotation and have effectively 2 molding machines running
