Thank you so much for painstakingly putting this together. I was born in Clifton in 1954, freedom was our choice of play over the muddy yet to be built sites that would be more houses. Some days we played outside without cause for worry all day, freely, & only went home when we were hungry. I feel proud of my Clifton roots & it’s so good to see some of the history here & being brought into the here & now of 2021.

Thanks Karen, I enjoy doing them, I have a few on here, 60s vs 70 Fashions, Its a Dogs Life, my favourite is Were They Really The Good Old Days? (if you like inages from the past, you will like this one, but there is some poverty etc in there), I put 2 versions on, same photos, but one is an instrumental background, (really nice), the other is related pop songs, but they don't grab the atmosphere anywhere near as much as the instrumental version heres the Instumental version th-cam.com/video/pI-U6Tn5AFs/w-d-xo.html and the one with songs is th-cam.com/video/Kiqhkw-gWn4/w-d-xo.html Or you can just search on Anthony Thornton and it should come up with them all. I also did a ccouple of great ones on the Beatles, and Marc Bolan and T.TREX, but I can't publish them, due to copywrite issues, so I just watch themmyself now and again. Just for info, I dont make ant money on any of my video's because Ilike to use pop songs in teh background, so any royalties go to the various artists, I just enjoy making them and sharing them.

My family moved to Greencroft, Clifton in 1952, when I was 2. No buses then, had to walk to Clifton lane to catch a South Notts bus. The shops on Varny Road, were still being built. A co-op fan came round, can't remember if it was more than once a week. The Estate finished on Rivergreen. Then over time it became huge. Happy memories

Thanks for sharing your happy memories Stephen 🙂 I didn't actually move to Clifton until 1983. I was born in London, and my grandparents who brought me up, moved all over the south and the midlands, eventually setting in Nottingham in 1969. The first time I saw Clifton was when I was courting my wife, who was born here in teh late 50s. When we wed, we initially bought a new build house from the council in the Meadows, and then 5 years later we moved to Clifton, to be closer to her family. I have always loved Clifton, I always remember in the early days for us, (late 70s / early 80s), the top shops always reminded me of a seaside place, I'm not sure what it was, maybe just because the shops were all on one side, or maybe the long hot sunny days we used to get back then, as you say, Happy memories 🙂

I used to live on Spring Green in Clifton, Nottingham (SAT NAV NG11 9EF). And now Listowel Crescent is home to the Yorkie Chocolate Bar run I do (has been since 2002)

This was good the photos went by a little too quick though. Also would be really nice to know whereabouts those really old looking photos are after around 1:07. There about 5 or 6 of them. Do you have any idea where exactly they are? Thanks 😊

Hi Tony, sorry for the delay in response. I seem to have been spending most of my time working in the office or sleeping over the last few months, (one of the few downsides of working from home, you cant leave it alone! At least when you travel to work and then leave it at teh end of the day, you can forget it, as you cant get your hands on it! 🙂 Anyway, I'm waffling on, one of my bad habbits. The honest answer to your quetion is that I don't know, but I think an educated guess would be that it's either old buildings in what is now known as Clifton Village, or, across the road on Glapton road area. I understand there was a blacksmiths house there, so they may have been nearby. I'm sorry I could not help any further, I don't have a lot of knowledge of the area, my familiy didnt move to Nottingham till 1969, and my wife and I didnt move to Clifton until 1983.

I think the building with the long white roof is where QMC (Queens Medical Centre) is now and the road is facing towards Clifton.

For me two pictures stand out, Green lane and Farnborough road (with cheddar road annex on the right and Holbrook ct on the left). It all seemed so "uncluttered" so simple but when you look at the modern day pictures with trams etc it all looks dirty, cluttered and to be honest, horrible. I'm a Clifton lad but I am so glad I don't live there now and that is by no means being disrespectful to the people who live there now it's just not my cup of tea.

Hi Andy, long time no speak, I hope you are well mate. Yes the one with Holbrook Court in was a nice shot, my mum and dad, (grandparents), lived in Holbrook Court for a while, but when he had a stroke, he and mum had to go into the Kingfisher rest home, (next to the Spinney / old RNIB place), as mum wasn't very good on her feet as well, so could not look after him.

Fairham school Gone 3 hundred houses planned there, grey mare gone, winning post gone, man of trent gone, tennants gone, jb's gone, Now another 3.700 homes being built between us and Gotham, anything green the council will build on , even Ruddo's growing like mad, we won't be able swing a cat soon.

Loved the video but would have liked more time to take in the detail of each picture before moving on to the next.

Hi, Thanks for the feedback. Yes I know what you mean, I was thinking that too, I originally set each picture to a longer period, but the wife thought it was too long and might put people off and they would not watch it to the end. If you would like a copy of the picctures just send me a facebook PM to Anthony Thornton, and I will send them to you. I found them all online, but I colorised all the B/W ones.
