    Keep their nesting boxes lower than their roosts. They will almost always look for a high place to roost at night.

      That is not the case here, mine are definitely way lower and they always sleep in my eggs are disgusting every day. I’m going to try this method and prayerfully it works.

    Make your roost out in something about 1-1/2 round instead of flat surface. Chicken,s like to be able to grasp what they roost on.

    That’s another reason why I use milk crates for their nest boxes that way I can just dump out the litter but I haven’t had that problem yet starting to though

    There is a channel called Chicken Caravan and their nest boxes are automated using actuators. Mine will be as well. The design is a flap that slowly pushes any chickens out before night fall. Flap only comes down far enough just above any eggs that may have not rolled away. I see yours and couldn't help think, that with a few modifications to the roosting bars, you could actually automate the push out flaps. You will have to make the roosting bars pivot. Almost like an attic drop down ladder. The idea is that the rope that operates the push out flaps is tied also to the roosting bars. When most of the chickens come in to roost, their weight will lower the roosting bars and the push out flaps will nudge out any birds in the nest boxes. That way you will not need to come out to the coop and have to do it. I hope I described it well enough to make sense.

      Yes! I'd love to get that sophisticated one day. That's cool.

    I"ve heard that the round natural tree branches are easier for them and better for their feet, not too big though.

      KA17 yea I saw that somewhere and added some to the other end of the coop. They do like it.

      Two-by-fours work good too cuz chickens don't like to curl their toes like most other birds do they will do it but they would rather sleep flat that way went cold they can lay down and cover their feet

    Flip narrow side of 2x4 roost narrow side up that will help or use 1.25 dowel rods they love to grab. But darken it more at night make them roost. Cover them sides and ends.

    Boxes are to high. Chickens roost high, put the boxes closer to the floor.

    • @WhereintheWorldisJosh
      @WhereintheWorldisJosh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish this were the answer...my boxes are 6" off hte ground and I have roosting bars floor to height, my 11 hens still cram themselves (all 11) into 3 1x1 boxes unless I cover it up.

    I put my nest box in the chicken tractor only 6 inches from the roof next to the perch. They are content to squese in there and feel secure while laying their egg but there is not enough height for them to comfortably roost on the edge.

    • @ChikinTown
      @ChikinTown  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hans Quistorff that makes sense.

    Lower the box and set a roost on a pivot to swing up and block the boxes in the night and swing down to be a roost in front of the boxes duing the day.

    • @ChikinTown
      @ChikinTown  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      riza nodos that's a tough one. Hard to break their bad habits unless you can put a roost that's a bit higher next to the AC. It might like a higher spot. But not hard to fly up to.

      plastic corrugated roofing (like ones used for roof in this vid) and attached at an angle so it looks like a tall roof.

  • @kathleensmith5132

    You are too funny! Since I don't cut wood or not a handyman (woman), I just put a thin plywood board I had laying around that was large enough to cover the two openings, and propped a long brick against it. So Every night I'll go out there and put it up and take it down in the morning until they are trained. Should take only a couple weeks max. My girls are about 4 months old.

    I have the same but by my it are the laying hens that like to sleep in the egg boxes for the night . Its a pain to close the egg boxes and open them again before the laying time. So yes it works to open and close them but its still a pain . And one day you forget to open them 😂

    Put your nesting boxes outside the coop. You still have to clean them with the set-up you've got.

    Of course raising or lowering door does not mean the chicken will leave the box. Plus, chickens who need to lay in the middle of the night will just do so on the ground.

  • @watchcub
    @watchcub 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They aren't using your roosting bars because you have made them too wide. They need to be able to grip round the bar with their feet, not have to sit with their feet flat on the bar.

  • @ThomasLips
    @ThomasLips 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The problem was your roost. Because it had different elevations the younger birds went to the nesting boxes.

    Don't give them a chance to nest at a level higher or equal height as the roosting ladders- they'll prefer the taller spot for safety.
