Platinum is a metal which comes from under the earth. Platinum as a Name is derived from Spanish term platino in 1600 century meaning "little silver". Platinum’s scarcity makes it expensive and only a few thousand tonnes are produced annually. Initially it was only mined in Canada but now 80% of the world production is in Africa.
Platinum is very ductile, which means it can be easily stretched into a wire. It is also malleable, meaning it can be pounded into a thin sheet without breaking.
Infact it is 30 times more rarer than gold, so only a handful will have it.
Platinum is more dense than gold which means a platinum chain of the same design will weigh much more than gold also it is used in some industrial applications such as automobile, healthcare etc.
Platinum doesn’t fade to yellow but it's shine fades away after a regular use just like any other metal, so platinum jewellery may require some maintenance to keep it shiny.
Platinum has always been considered as the jewel for royals. Do you know the world famous diamonds such as Jonker, koh-I-noor and hope are also studded in platinum.
Price of platinum depends on its Demand and supply.
It used to be much higher than gold but now it is cheaper than gold. However overall it is a good investment because of its rarity.
Usually you can get Platinum Rings, Chains, Bands and bracelets at the jewellery store. Make sure you check the '950' stamp and Don't forget to take the certificate.
Labour charges are normally higher than that of gold, because it is a very hard metal and manufacturing becomes complicated. Platinum's melting temperature is more than 3 times of gold.
Platinum never looses its colour due to rough usage like white gold does, Brands are good specially doctors who use lot of acetone to wash hands.

What if I lose the certificates?
I have 2 queries: 1. Tanishq and Caratlane say they are not providing PGI certificate since last year and instead they provide inhouse certificate with Pt950 authentication. Is it OK to get any other certificate than PGI? 2. Can Platinum be sold to/exchanged/bought back by different makers than the one it was purchased, when it carries PGI certificate or self certificate?
It can be sold without the PGI certificate too. However you have to make sure it's authentic.
I got ring fake for fun. This has the m ark 950 inside. I thought I paid for silver. Not platinum with cubic. Not 950 is silver.
