For me you can feel the joy Paul had by making this album in every song. And that‘s what I‘m missing most of the time in today‘s love songs. This makes him so special. Writing a love song seems so natural to him, that you don‘t get the feeling that he has to work on it. He’s more playing with lyrics, music ideas and song structure than following a specific formula.

The best Paul “solo” album. I’m glad you’re still going with it, the last song is an epic and maybe leading toward what’s to come…

For an album packaged to give an impression of naive homemade simplicity, this is the complete rug-pulling opposite: inventive melodic composition, arrangement and production designed to compliment the lyrics and emotive intention. Joyful devotion eloquently expressed.

Wonderful production on this song -- and Paul was the co-producer and arranger, as on all his other albums. It may have been Paul's idea to go to Columbia Records' A&R Studio on 52nd St. in NYC to record the orchestral parts with some of the NY Philharmonic Orch. This will have consequences for his friend John Lennon, who would also record an album with his wife in NYC a couple years later, and eventually move there.

I've been known to set this album aside for as long as a decade, but every time I come back to it I'm reminded that it is seriously one of the 10-15 albums that helped to shape and define my sense of what music is supposed to be. Damn. This album both takes me back to 7th grade and reminds me of all of the music it led me to over 5 decades. Thank you for letting me remember a bit about what it was like to hear it the first time, through your appreciation of it all.

You're comments on Paul's sincerity in his love songs makes me think the same is true when John Lennon wrote about his love for Yoko Ono. The thing that makes a ditty like "Oh Yoko!" work is the genuine love behind it. It becomes artistically elevated because it captures that universal feeling of joy one feels when one is in love. It is interesting how often during this period , so soon after the Beatles' break up, both Paul and John wrote such heartfelt songs for Linda and Yoko, both of whom were the only source of support for their husbands in the aftermath of the Beatles' demise.

Long haired lady makes me think of the long straight hair that was popular in the late 1960s and early 70s. I remember it. No horror.
I hear how much fun Paul had making and think how crushing it must have been to hear everyone trash it. I love the echoing "love is long." As it keeps going it hearkens back to Hey Jude. Also love the Ram On reprise and wish it were longer.
Now I'm hearing your thoughts. Always more interesting than mine.

Hi, Hi, Hi Justin. Dave from London. Long Haired Lady is not my favourite from Ram, but once again it shows off what a brilliant songsmith Macca is. So many melodies and styles combined effortlessly. OK, the fade out is too long, as it's not as good as Hey Jude (but, hey, what is?). Also, unlike you, I'm not mad on Linda's background vocals. As for my favourite of his love songs to her, it has to be My Love from the next album Red Rose Speedway (my song ref Hi Hi Hi is a bonus track from that one)

"Long Haired Lady" is not unpleasant but not remarkable, and then the piece lasts too long for what it is. "Ram On (Reprise)" is totally superfluous and strangely its coda includes a few bars of what will become the track "Big Barn Bed" on the 'Red Rose Speedway' album 2 years later !!!! 🤔

  • @yes_head
    @yes_head 2 ปีที่แล้ว

As often is the case on a McCartney track, the best thing is the bass part. 😎 But I'm glad that Ram is held in higher esteem today than it was back in the day. There was so much "fog of war" around the breakup of the Beatles coloring people's opinions back then that they missed seeing these solo albums for what they really were.

    There's a clear psychedelic influence.
And I'd also say for all chart pop's bad reputation now in the 21st century it wasn't always like that. There used to be more variety and to hit big records had to sell a lot.

Lovely lilting melody with beautiful overlapping harmonies. I love the way it builds in such a dreamy and heartfelt manner. McCartney never afraid to wear his love for Linda on his sleeve. Nice segue from the Ram On reprise into the big climax to the album Back Set Of My Car, which you can see Paul composing during the Beatles' Get Back series. It could have fit nicely on Abbey Road, for example.

    Apropos long hair.
*Molly Tuttle* doesn't get jealous of people with long hair, she just wears a wig. And sometimes she doesn't - like sometimes when it's too hot, and she's about to sing a song she wrote about a *Crooked Tree* th-cam.com/video/aX3dPxXk-W4/w-d-xo.html

Even more off topic: More songs from the new *Major Parkinson* album are starting to be released on TH-cam. In the full version of *Fantasia Me Now* I think they might've gotten up to a bit of _mischief_ with the autotune (especially if you refer to their crowdfunding song for some more context). th-cam.com/video/kK_mMghmDJ8/w-d-xo.html
I think it's a combination of mischief and more, though. And then midway there's more mischief of a different kind.
It's a Peri Winkle song, maybe, (but I think Peri Winkle is just Ms Cox, the singer and violinist - whose violin can be heard under the synths, often).

Jellyfish - Spilt Milk is full of stuff like this. Plus bits of Queen, Supertramp. 10cc and ooh you know all the other bands influenced by the Fab 4. Personally I only fell under the spell during the Mull Of Kintyre , Frog Chorus and No More Lonely nights /Regards to Broadway period , excluding all the singles that is. No, I'm wrong , I bought Flowers in the Dirt too.
Since then, I feel like vomitin' everything he stands 4. There's something spooky about the guy, You know, disingenuous, deceitful and self-righteous? This song? Must've been good at the time. My disdain of the Machinery prevents me from givin them more of my time. Cue: Screamin Female Obsessive Intensity. .

Love may be long, but not as long as the fade out of this rather twee ditty to his mrs.... Could've improved it by shaving 2 mins off, easy. Pretty bland, though that little mid break was ok. Didn't see the point of that reprise though!? * But speaking as one who at one time had hair down to his waist, yeah, looked great (well i thought so), but could be high maintenance 🙂
