Compared to the Beatles, it seemed slightly under-produced at the time, but looking back over 50 years, it sounds perfect. Maybe ahead of its time. This is such a passionate song. Great material throughout the album.

That final line woahhhhhhhh we believe that we can’t wrong yeah yeah yeah! Is one of the greatest most impassioned sung lyrics Macca ever performed and it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Heavy stuff going on with Beatles at that time and adopting Heather but they had each other’s love like you say Justin and that gave Macca everything he needed to carry on. What a performance what a woman and what an end to an album. Perfect❤

He has so many greats but I have to go with this as my favorite solo Paul song. Hypnotic. The melodies, the instrumentals, tempo changes and his voice. It’s just perfect. His little Beatles-esque “Yeah!” leading into the first “Oh, we believe that we can’t be wrong” makes me smile every time. And when he breaks, laughing around 2:43, I laugh. Just a genius. We’re so lucky to have him. ❤

Paul had been together with Jane Asher for about five years (they got engaged in December of 1967). Most of McCartney's love songs were about Asher through 1968. Paul first met Linda in May of 1967 when she was in London to cover the launch of the Sgt. Pepper album as a photographer. They met again in May of 1968 when John & Paul went to New York to publicize the beginning of Apple (Linda was based in NY). Jane called off her engagement to Paul on July 20th, 1968 (after she caught Paul with another woman named Francie Schwartz). Paul & Linda became an item and moved in together about 3 months later - in the fall of 1968. They got married on March 12th, 1969. They began recording the Ram album version of "Back Seat of My Car" on October 22, 1970... but Paul had played an early version of it during the "Get Back" sessions in January of 1969. So Paul had come up with the song just a couple months after he and Linda had started living together in the fall of 1968.

Wonderful, uplifting, life-affirming song, one of McCartney's best. It captures that feeling of young love, standing defiant against anyone who tells them they're not meant to be together (the press, fans?). Very much in the style of the Beach Boys' pocket symphonies. It's no surprise that McCartney's favourite track of all time is God Only Knows. This though has some real bite and defiance as well as being a touching declaration of love. Brilliant melodies and harmonies as you'd expect from Macca. So nearly a Beatles song - Paul demoed this during the Get Back sessions - see the recent Peter Jackson series. Don't forget to check out Another Day / Oh Woman Oh Why - also on the 'Ram' CD I sent you - they're not bonus tracks, but a standalone hit single recorded during the 'Ram' sessions. The single reached number 2 in the UK and number 5 in the US. Then move on to the Band On The Run album, which is another McCartney classic. For anyone interested, I had the privilege of interviewing drummer Denny Seiwell about the making of 'Ram' and the early Wings albums earlier this year - just Google search for 'jeremy blackmore journo portfolio denny seiwell'. Denny's a really lovely guy.

Hi Justin. Dave from London, with Friday On My Mind. One of my favourites from Macca, but it also shows up why so many people criticised his solo stuff. Yes, it's shallow and it's all about the pop hooks. But we get romance, Paul's sweet melodic voice as well as his rocky yell, and it's like a pocket symphony, with so many musical ideas crammed into four minutes. I would still say that my favourite of his love songs to Linda is My Love from the following album Red Rose Speedway

    • @br.martindallyosb1147

Red Rose Speedway was my first McCartney album, and bought for it the song "My Love". I've not heard it in literally decades, but at the time I really enjoyed the album. It's by no means a classic album, but it has some real gems on it. It's odd that "My Love" seems to have been forgotten, as I remember it being huge at the time. Great song.

Paul and Linda had "that fresh flame" until the day Linda died, from what I understand. They had been married 2 years when this album was released, so yes, it was still early in the relationship.

I loved your reactions to this whole album and the entire time I was just waiting for you to get to this track. I KNEW it would floor you and you did not disappoint. There’s another young man doing RAM and he’s just about to get to this one and I’m looking forward to his reaction.
I’m sure other commenters told you this album got SLAMMED by the critics but I think it was mostly they were still blaming Paul for breaking up the Beatles (he did not nor did Yoko).
I “discovered” this album in 1976 and had it on 8-track so songs were cut in the middle as tracks changed but I still loved it then and now the box set with this, the mono mix, the instrumental album called “Thrillington” and some outtakes (and a book). Look for it online if you can.

This song points the way to much of Paul's later solo work. It's effortlessly melodic with deft piano playing, those George Martin strings, loads of hooks, masterful vocal arranging... not a bad end to an album full of fine songs.

I know this might sound hyperbolic to some, but to me, Paul & Linda were the ultimate Love Story! He so unabashedly loved her that he was determined to not only NOT hide it, but to shout it out and declare it to the world!
Of course, John also did this over Yoko, and theirs was also a beautiful love story, but it got overshadowed by all the other BS. But John was JUST as determined to "shout it to the rooftops" about his love for Yoko, He was just as vocal about it as Paul was about Linda, but John's songs about his love for Yoko were not as "grandiose" as Paul's were.
That's not a criticism, just an observation of two of my favorite musicians from the most important band there ever was, who changed my entire life, as they did the lives of the world who grew up listening to them!
Justin, I am hoping SO HARD that you will go back and do "McCartney", his first solo album! MAGICAL!!!
And then, "Band on the Run" and "Venus & Mars"!!!!😃

A joyous song. McCartney is brilliant. I grew up with everyone praising Lennon and calling McCartney a schmaltzy songwriter who never came close to what he did in the Beatles. Paul did a huge range of music. Some was schmaltzy, some was pretentious, but some was brilliant.

  • @lewismaddox4132

Wow, I took it completely the other way. I bought this album when it came and I always thought it was the other way around, parental control.
"And listen to her Daddy's song, we believe that we can't be wrong!"
I thought it was the same parental iron fisted control that manifested in the confusion of "She's Leaving Home", and more famously, Romeo and Julliet.
Of course I'm probably wrong, but I formed these ideas when I was feeling overwhelmingly oppressed. Parents aren't great listeners.

For me this is romantic treacle. Pop for young and somewhat naive lovers. No a bad thing in itself and there are songs that fit this mold that I love but this felt like something from a decade earlier. Odd how I am more comfortable with other songs that harken back to earlier musical styles. If this had been on Sgt Peppers I would have loved it so it evidently is more me than the song itself.

I wanted to love these last couple songs but to me, they don’t equal the others. They predict the silly love songs to come. Lack of depth, just busy. There are some nice parts, don’t get me wrong.
I’m going to repeat myself, a great album with a couple clunkers. I usually don’t skip them but I might in the future. Another Day should be included here, an earlier single. Way better…
The I don’t usually do the b-sides and singles rule should be done away with. That’s half the fun.

Ram is a hot mess. All these great bits of melody that generally go nowhere, and a lot of insipid or "let's flip John off" lyrics. This one, a Beatles left-over, is marred by Linda's atrocious backing vocals (and so high in the mix - you thought only John could blunder when mixing songs including his wife on the Sometime In NYC album) and Paul's inability to close the song out properly. It has like three conclusions. Compare to "1985" which closes the Band on the Run album which builds to just the right crescendo and ends where it ought to end.

Would rather listen to Yardbirds, pecking away at the Rolling Stones. But I get my Kinks off to the Canterbury scene, if you know what I mean, Uncle Albert? Macca ain't no Mozart or Schubert. And only one fourth of a much better quartet! Peace.
