Fan games are special. I once made one, ripping off the original ChickenQuest. Great video, riggy! Such a compilation of fine games. I still need to check out Miranda...
I really appreciate the discourse about how important fan works are for keeping a game or a series alive far beyond the expectations of the original creation. Art lives as long as we make it, and these are incredible examples of the revitalization of art pieces through retelling and showing. Excellent video, Riggy!
Love the Chemical Zone music being used in any video. I love fan games. Shouts out to Triple Triad: Tournament of the Elements. And the game at 2:05, the monstrosity called Benny + hotgamerdad and the Bajillion DVDs, created by myself and hotgamerdad about a Bajillion DVDs. Go nominate it for an Oscar now. Appreciate you both providing exposure to the fangame making stuff and also good implementations of it. I am the creator of the Mother series and the Legend of Zelda series and I love whenever someone expresses how much they are a fan of the Halo series I made when I was in my teen years - Halo 1, 2 and 3.
Nice video! I've been working as an artist/designer for the last few years, and I recently decided to start trying out game development. This vid was a great taste of what's possible and within reach :) Looking through your other videos and you clearly have a lot of knowledge with RPG Maker, so I'm excited to watch them as I work on my game!
Absolutely fantastic video, and I think sharing all this information will only help to serve and inspires others to dip their toes into expressing themselves with either fan games of their own or to attempt work on their own projects.^^
@@Riggy2k3 Yea. That script is fucking amazing and has saved me 100s of hours and let me use different outfits for characters. If you ever do a part two you should mention it.
Hmm. Interesting points made in this video about this video game maker, "RPG Maker". A masterful tribute to the game developer industry. I have been in denial about the industry since I've approached game developer status my self. Game maker looks sick, 10/10, lots of sick breakdowns 🔥🔥🔥
Fangames are such a huge part of the rpgmaker community. I've never really been into them myself (except the Chrono Resurrection that could have been, rip) but it's a shame how over-protective companies get over their IP. I understand their perspective but I think they exaggerate how much the rest of the community cares if there's a bunch of "poorly made" fangames. It's not harming their brand. I agree that it's far better to encourage more engagement. It's too bad that not every franchise can have their own Mario Maker type of thing but wouldn't it be neat if some franchises actually started selling asset packs for rpg maker?
Hey Riggy, I'm a bit late, this video being a year old...and yet youtube recommended it anyway lol. Just thought I'd put in my two cents. Used to write a lot of fanfiction, particularly Zelda but probably some others here or there, and to this day I do tons of fan art when I'm not trying to design my own characters. But there was a time I wanted to do fangames, particularly inspired by all the Ocarina of Time 2D projects that either never went anywhere or got CNDs, I think the most popular one actually being made in RPG Maker by a user named Dampe. It's unfortunate that as well as the more recent Another Metroid 2 Remake got stopped by Nintendo. I didn't succeed in much, but I feel I have learned a lot, even as the engines available to me have changed quite a bit. For many years I used Game Maker, both version 5 and 8 I believe before it got bought by Yoyo games. I wanted to make my own Zelda stuff, even my own Metroid game, but being so young I don't think I had the skills to grasp exactly all that entailed. Eventually I found a very basic engine reminiscent of Super Mario World, and thankfully it was easy enough for me to understand, and so I ended up making most of the sprites and simply designing levels and bosses and calling it 'Super Mario Lol' because I couldn't think of a better name. Up until your recent game jam, that's the only project I'd ever finished. Having two minor ones under my belt has given me some confidence going forward at least. For a while with my fanfiction, I struggled with the idea of wasting my time writing these when I could be making up my own stories instead, and ultimately I stopped anyway because it was simply time I couldn't afford to sink into it anymore, especially choosing to focus more on my artwork. But these days I'm finding it doesn't have to be all one or the other, especially seeing what all people have made to be played here changing my perception of what art can be. Even the incredibly silly stuff has artistic merit imo. There's so much worth experiencing if you set aside your ideas of what can and can't be art. Now, personally I am putting in an effort to focus on original works for now, but I have so many ideas for fan stuff, namely a sequel to my game jam game...is that technically fanfic? :P But also ideas based off of Hololive starring Mori and Gura, a crossover between Another Code and Deadly Premonition, even Senran Kagura though I'm sure not many would find it fitting to turn that into a turn based RPG but man I'm just miffed there will likely never be another mainline game in that series. But then there are some others I'm on the fence on, where I want to make something like Fire Emblem but much darker in tone and content, or something very much inspired by Jojo but with its own world and rules and such. I guess only time will tell if I even make it to many of these to begin with. Well, there's my long drivel for the day. thanks for reading! Hope to catch more of your streams soon.
I never thought of making a yume Nikki fan game. I have wild dreams so that would cool to put in a game. Also I have to try out the earthbound starter kit one day.. that would be fun to mess around with.

It's entirely why Skyrim is still popular, the modding capability.

Can you tell me the version of the "Dark World/World of Ruin" theme you used on the FF section?
Whats the alien game at 6:44 ?

The Yume Nikki template looks interesting. Wish I knew about this sooner.

Lots of great tools! Maybe a Yume Nikki styled Earthbound game? 🤔🤔
@@Riggy2k3 oh that is a good idea. Like a game were you explore your own magicant except it has a yume Nikki look.
