Theme from Star Trek 4 The Voyage Home (cover)

In November of 1986, STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME made its theatrical debut. The three previous movies arguably involved some serious drama. Everything from an alien object which was obsessed with finding its creator, even at the expense of wiping out all carbon-based life on Earth, to a battle with an old arch-nemesis who has a score to settle, at the cost of the life of a certain first officer. If that weren't enough, our stalwart crew stole a starship to rescue the soul of a dead friend at even more cost. It was time to lighten things up a bit.
THE VOYAGE HOME was a time travel story that took the crew of the late starship Enterprise into late 20th century San Francisco on a search for some humpback whales. In true Star Trek form, there was a message couched within the entertainment, and everything was sprinkled with just the right amount of humor. A constant laugh fest? No. Nor should it have been. It was a fairly lighthearted romp with some old friends.
Leonard Rosenman's score was a departure from those composed by Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner. Perhaps this was a good thing, as the theme of this film was so different from its predecessors. Like many of his contemporaries, Mr. Rosenman was quite prolific, composing both for film and television. The score I most remember was for FANTASTIC VOYAGE (1966). I found on a re-watch of FANTASTIC VOYAGE that there are elements of THE VOYAGE HOME within that score... or rather, the other way around. Mr. Rosenman's style was all his own, and I think it was just right for THE VOYAGE HOME. In the late 1980s, it was my favorite soundtrack to listen to.
As an homage to that time and to that score, I present my own rendition of the opening theme from STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME. Except for the Paramount logo, the background plate and sound effect, everything you're about to see was recreated from scratch. I hope you enjoy listening and watching as much as I enjoyed (re)creating this!
