@@RiftTraveller We have seen it happened to Adobe, Autodesk and Unity. It will only be a matter of time before Epic Games start to capitalize on their win against Unity and other big 3D game engine companies, by increasing their prices in the future. Remember about their drama in the 2000s where Epic was deliberately withholding features and support for UE third party licensees so that Epic's first party games would look and run better? Another notable wrongdoing was their intentional breach of contract with Apple refusing to pay the stipulated percentage for in-app purchases in Fortnite. No one has an issue with them making money. In fact I’d like them to make more to make the engine better. The issue is the fact that it changed arbitrarily. Even changing to games already released.
Would be much more understandable if it was % of revenue and only to projects made in Unity 2024+. So devs can make an educated choice at the beginning of their project that will last until the end. Then if the new tools are worth it, and the new terms acceptable they will upgrade.
The issue is the automatic opt in to any future whim, reasonable or otherwise.

Godot 4 is shockingly easy to learn with experience in Unity, made the switch a while back when I saw how much better 4 is at handling 3D than the previous versions. The improved C# support makes things very easy to jump the fence if you're used to writing scripts for Unity. The built in support to use .blend files without having to export and then import into Unity is a dream, even works real time if you save a change to the .blend file in blender it automatically updates it in the scene you're using it in in Godot... can't even express how great this is for designing objects, maps, enemies, whatever when it lets you test it real time before you do the final export once you know it's how you want it. This isn't to say it's perfect by any means but after 3 months of learning it I'd say I'm just as comfortable as I was in Unity at this point and really don't miss anything about it

Building on your point, Godot is an excellent choice for indie developers because:
      1) It has no licensing fees.
      2) Developers don't have to be concerned about unexpected changes that could create challenges.
      3) Even if such issues were to arise, since the engine is open-source, anyone can create a clone where licensing fees aren't a concern. This is one of the reasons they opted for the MIT license (please correct me if I'm wrong about this).

I was meaning to switch anyways just to move more towards FOSS, but this is just the nail in the coffin. I wish you and everyone else luck in our switch. One thing you will find is that a lot of your investment in time isn't lost. The principles are all the same. Game engines don't diverge that much. At work (I work in a game development company specialising in tech) - I will routinely switch between engines based on the clients need. I'm currently working on an in-house game engine for a large Japanese client. Next year, it may be UE5. And I suspect soon, we'll get a lot of people coming to us to port Unity games to some other engine.
There is some friction to learning a new engine - but your investment in time is going to be a lot lower the second time around. You can probably be productive within days. Don't sweat it - don't think of the problem in specifics, think about it in concepts.

    • @rob-rendell
      @rob-rendell ปีที่แล้ว +5

It must be very discouraging, but remember: downloading another engine and having a play isn't a commitment. If you feel trapped and frustrated with the current Unity situation, you could download Godot and/or Unreal, and spend a weekend just working through some tutorials while thinking about how that engine's features might apply to your game. Don't think about everything that you'd have to do all over again, just pick one thing about your game you think is cool and try to get that bit working in another engine. As @zoeherriot says, you'll find that a lot of the underlying fundamentals from your Unity learning will apply to other engines, even if the specifics are different. You can always go back to working on your game in Unity later if you decide the alternatives aren't working for you.

I feel for you man 😢. This is the reason why I now also have open source apps in my resume. Apart from other 3D apps I learned Blender (specifically because the proprietary ones always came up with this type of BS). Blender became so popular because of that and has improved super fast.
With game engines is the same. It doesn't hurt to have some experience with an engine like Godot in your resume. Even if it's not your main engine, having experience with it will always keep you safe from BS like this from Greedy Corporations who will always put profits first to milk their user base to oblivion.
Try C# version of Godot for a few weeks. Follow some small tutorials and you'll feel better and more secure (even if it doesn't become your main engine you'll definitely feel better) 😊

Perhaps learning the base engine won't be too much of a transition if you're doing File > New Project today. But if you're two years into a project, or if you've built it around one or more of the many excellent frameworks in the extremely mature Asset Store such as Gaia or Corgi, then you're in trouble. Unreal is not really an option for me as I prefer to have 4-5 old macbooks and iMacs dotted around the house that I can jump on at any given moment, and that really needs a dedicated desktop machine with a decent GPU. While coming from Unity, Godot's workflows are just...weird.
Learning a new language/API is the easy part, it's the other stuff - if your Unity project is heavy on Scriptable Objects/Addressables/DOTS/Jobs/VR, you've got to redesign everything from scratch to fit the Unreal/Godot approach.

@@kodaxmaxEither way if you've been doing it for 3, 5, or 10 years then by now it's second nature whether it was intuitive to begin with or not - you don't even have to think. Time spent looking up how a given engine handles X or Y is time not spent making the game.
Godot failed my 'intuitivity' test almost immediately by referring to what I would describe perhaps as an 'object', 'entity', 'prototype', 'component' or 'prefab' as a 'scene'. So you create your bullet scene, attach it your gun scene, place that in your avatar scene and then place that scene in the scene scene before dynamically loading the data for the current cutscene scene into your scene scene.

The TOS changes is the deal breaker for me too. One thing I will point out having worked in IT for decades it is good for folks to switch technology every decade or so. For my game dev efforts I'll be spending a bit of time in both Unreal and Godot for the next bit and then making a decision. But this decision is no where near as difficult for me as so far I haven't finished a game.

This is easily the best video on this topic. Good job! Me, I'm an animator and character designer. I have some 40 animals, fully animated, on the Unreal Marketplace. This change doesn't much affect me, as I switched to Unreal years ago, though I do have a contract I might have to use Unity for. What I wanted to mention, is how different Unreal's approach to things are. Years ago when Unreal opened it's marketplace for people like me, they had a 30% commission rate, the same as Unity. Not many artists were joining it, and Epic asked us why. Me, personally, I wrote that good assets are a HUGE benefit to the engine, and we shouldn't be charged much at all, again because we make the platform better, and easier to use. Soon after, Tim Sweeney came out and announced that Unreal would only charge 12%, the lowest in the industry, by far. Just enough to cover costs and be able to develop it more. The people at Unreal are 1 of us, including Sweeney!

BTW, If you are looking for something HUGE to get into and do tutorials for, Epic released UEFN earlier this year. This is where anyone can make a game within the Fortnite Metaverse. Epic essentially made a Fortnite editor that has most of the same features in Unreal Engine. Soon, Epic will release FAB, which will put the Unreal Marketplace in both the Unreal Engine and UEFN, allowing Fortnite users to make games that don't resemble Fortnite at all. Because of this, I have jumped into Fortnite big time. The game itself is pure genius, and I'm fully addicted.

But with all this? Now it’s a bit more complicated.
We already have schedules and deadlines to follow from other classes and personal life stuff. Now, we need to take EVEN MORE time from that to discuss whether or not Unity is right for our team.

Saying that isn't the main problem is the problem. The new monitaization model they introduced is absolutely ridiculous and downright evil. The concept of having to pay a royalty on top a subscription itself was ridiculous. But ig it kept the subscription fees managable at most. Choose one. The concept of installation based payment is like Adobe asking youtubers to pay a fee for each video they make using their products. If unity is allowed to go forward with this model it won't be too long before other coorps try to adopt this model. We need to stop saying their new revenue model is okay.

@Samyam impressive understanding of the situation. Kudos on the intelligent and reasonable TH-cam video.
Yes .. I plus one your assessment that this change could be related to iron source, as someone who's followed unity for many years.
I am horrified at the idea of installing all of my steam games on a new client, we're making space and then reinstalling them, and then that charging all of the developers whom I have games from, another $0.01 to $0.20.
Marc Whitten the CFO of Unity is also responsible for this incompetent business model change.

Good points! One of the biggest issues, even if they rollback is the issue of trust. Unity made changes to TOS tracking etc. and made changes to TOS to make this change possible etc. Even if they rollback, how can devs trust Unity in future? One theory is that they are planning or have planned to rollback so in the end devs would think that Unity listens, but still ending up in a situation where there's a new fee, wether it be runtime fee or some concotion of revenue share. The fact that Unity is offering fee waivers unde the table to certain developers makes this even shadier.

Out of the Unity Influencers / Insiders, I honestly thought that you would be one of the ones to take a watch and see approach. So, when I watched this, I was mildly surprised.. That said, you actually covered in a very similar manner everything that we here at Apophis Software have discussed internally, and I wanted to say that we support your decision. I know you really don't need that, but we share the same concerns and lost of trust, and came to the same conclusions.
    Good luck in your efforts!!!

I'm there with you. Switched from Unity to Godot for my project. Getting going with C# in it and so far so good.

the only good thing I can see coming out of this is that we might start getting unreal tutorials from samyam with the same level of quality as her unity tutorials.
    Looking forward to it
