    About Patricia
    ----------
Patricia Jackson, her husband, and their children live in her mother’s basement in the Roseland neighborhood on the South Side. The family’s only source of steady income was Patricia’s low-wage job at a WIC grocery, until the coronavirus pandemic forced her to take time off. Now a remarkable opportunity has landed on Patricia’s doorstep: a nonprofit called the Family Independence Initiative offered her financial assistance with no strings attached. In the short term, these cash infusions will allow the family to keep their heads above water. Looking to the future, Patricia and her husband hope to get an exciting new business off the ground.

I wish my family was close like this. My parents were never supportive.. we had a very broken and dysfunctional family.. I grew up in a upper middle class neighborhood in northwest indiana and my parents always tried to make us seem like this perfect happy family.. and even though we were well off with money.. everything else was shit... I had no love growing up. Not everything is what it seems sadly. You can have money but still be sad and unhappy. God bless this family. I would’ve loved to grow up with them all.

I'm from NWI as well. But I grew up in a poor neighborhood (The Brickyard in East Chicago), in my grandparents house until my mom moved to Houston in 1985 and I followed her in 1986. It totally changed my life! It was a slow start, but my mom had 2 degrees and she eventually got a great job when I was around 8/9. She was able to provide me with a middle class upbringing and I lived a totally different life than my cousins who were still in East Chicago. I came home every summer from 7 to 17. I saw them living in the projects, and I knew it wasn't normal because of how I lived. I was always an old soul and wise beyond my years, so I knew that I was blessed to have the lifestyle I had growing up. My mom recently retired from the city of Houston's housing and community development department and is living her best life. But I always had love. From E.C. to Houston, I had a village around me that loved and cared for me. I was an only child until I was 18. My mom basically started over when I went to college lol. It took a while, but I'm grateful for my younger sister now. She's amazing and I can't wait to see what she's about to do in the entertainment industry.

They’re not living in poverty! They’re living in peace and happiness from what I am looking at! Just a big beautiful family and they had their father around! More than what I had growing up and he instilled such importance in his daughter especially about being independent and loving yourself first. This has me tearing up. ❤️ I was always so jealous of those who had all of their family together and still am as my entire family is all spread out across the country. We may have the financial means through our careers but I live with a brokenness from feeling neglected by living in different homes with different people growing up. While I have a home, beautiful home with my husband and daughters, I feel lonely many days. I work from home in software and hubby works away all week out of the country. I am not complaining but from what I see from this family, they are HAPPY and they have each OTHER and that’s so important in life! ❤️

My heart goes out to you because I understand what you might be dealing with. My family lived in the same house together, but we were so broken and damaged that it didn't make much of a difference. We didn't have the financial means. My Mother was technically a single Mother of three. but your story and mine just goes to show that there are all kinds of poverty. Perhaps we need to expand the definition so we can see, hear and help everyone who lives in their own type of poverty.

Both comments beautifully said! Thanks for sharing! It’s all about perspective and the aspect that being poverty stricken shouldn’t only mean financially… ppl are financially stable, but have no support, no love, no sense of family. In the end, what truly matters is the love you’re surrounded with! Some of the best stories and loving moments in ppl lives is when they didn’t have much! I wish everyone peace and love!

The FII program seems great but they should teach the recipients about finances especially when they don't have to pay back the loan some may look at it as free money to get over a temporary hurdle but educating them goes even further so they can avoid being in this situation months or a year from now

I totally get essential jobs, but I am floored at the gatherings, no masks and hugging between households. I've learned a while ago that there are just some people who don't take this virus seriously. It's every man and woman for themselves. We can't worry about them, and we can't force them to wear their masks and social distance. A lot of people just think that as long we know each other, then we can "trust" each other to be safe and not sick. That's wrong and unfortunately some people have to learn it the hard way. I've been keeping me and my family safe, but its up to everyone else how they want to handle this virus. But rest assured, there are many folks like us out there who take it seriously. I think its 50/50 really. The country is polarized about it and it didn't help how the health authorities, politicians and government have handled the messaging on COVID. Its up to you to keep yourself safe!

They have such a lovely and blessed family. And their father passed down and instilled the love of God within them, he sounded like a REAL LEADER who kept God first, and a man like that will surely be blessed with a family who sticks together. My family was always big like this, but the dysfunction took over, and people forgot to keep God first and then generations came after who didn’t even know him really. But I hope to marry a Godly man who keeps the Lord first, because I want a big family too 🥲🥹. God bless you girl 💕 everything will work out because the Lord has already got it set for you. They might not be rich but they have a strong family bond which will greatly help them traverse lifes ups and downs. There are currently many people homeless due to not having a close loving family to rely on in difficult times. From London, UK

There needs to be programs that help hardworking middle-class people who just need a little help along the way. It is not easy for anyone out here and it is discouraging to some people who work 40 hours a week and are still struggling because of inflation.

The way Patricia talks about her father I can relate. It’s been 13 years and to this day I can’t look at his pictures or hang them up in my house. It hurts me to the core to know that he is gone. When your rock is gone it’s gone. Nothing and nobody can replace him or make it better. The pain doesn’t ease you just learn to keep it to yourself.
