Magz, would you ever consider just making a an instructional video/series of videos for WarThunder- like, how to not suck in the air? You really seem to have your shit together behind the stick, and you're pretty good at explaining the flow of battle, so maybe that'd transfer well to a sort of tutorial format. Like, if nothing else, a guide on how to fly energy fighters might suit you. You seem to know exactly how to choose dive angles, when to break and when to commit, how to lead a target at high deflection, all that sort of wonderful stuff that makes for a terrifying pilot
lol yea don't underestimate russian cobras when you make sure you killed them just put 50 more rounds in them i played 1 match where we were 4 A6Ms vs 1 kingcobra and you guessed it yes he won. 2 of us got AAed and he killed 1 of us (1 of us rammed him and we all put combined 100 20mm rounds into him) but he keeps flying and wins the match. i am NOT joking about this.
Yeah, I have similar feelings to Cobras and King cobras as I have to 9Ts and K's. I tend to keep shooting at them until I get a kill award or I see important bits falling off.
Just a question for you magz. So I was playing in my fw 190 d12 today ( fully upgraded) on norway. So I was at about 20 k ft defending the bomb points and I take down the 2 b 17's so I decide to rtb. So I am going at a about 550 kph going dead straight. Then I notice a f8f-1 (the one without supercharged wep) at about 3 km behind me, at about 18 k ft. He keeps coming to me, slowly closing. I finally had enough of this and I start to dive at about a 20 angle. He is still gaining so I take it into a very steep dive to about 850 kph. He is still gaining. So I get to sea level and he is still behind me. At this point he is about 1.5 km behind me. So I just keep going straight and a few minutes later he is .5 km behind me. There is nothing I can do. Note that I was WEPing the whole time. I try a rolling scissors but there is just nothing I could do. If I am correct, the f8f weighs about as much as a feather and the Dora is more than that. Sooooooooooo gaijin. Thoughts?? Also I am not that bad of a pilot with about a 1:1.1 kill ratio in rb. So I at least know what I am doing to an extent.

Its funny I really like that plane and it is by far my most lethal option for me to use, I just never realized it suffers from the problems you mentioned.
Mags have you tried the Realistic No HUD event they have going on? Other than the air spawn I like it because even though I don't have your vision problems being able to be third person helps me a lot when driving a tank/flying.
magz, the bf109 f4's gunpods have the high velocity armor piercing rounds. The 15mm are the best cannons in my opinion in the game. The api-(c) cermet core rounds can pen heavies and will wipe out an entire column in no time. Plus, they are also good in air to air situations, sets everything on fire. This is why i love the bf109 f4s so much. The 15mm pods made them much more versatile.
Where did you learn to fly so good in realistic and is the a chance that you put up "flight school" videos teaching the way of your skillz?:P (btw Happy belated Australia Day^_^)

I'm relatively knew to this game, but absolutely love the strategy I see from other players. One question I have though is that with all of these plains, how do you know the most appropriate way to take the different ones on? Is it just through experience similar to Dota? The second thing I noticed is that multiple players have wingmen. What's the best way to find people to play with?

Honestly I don't mind them, Lets be honest all random battles are alternate history after all. The 262 was never in Korea, Russian MiGs never flew with CL-13a's, The 229 never saw combat and the MiG-9 and F80c Never took part in the battle of Berlin Gryphon Spitfires and Bearcats never flew against Zeros in the Pacific.. My only issue with them is they don't go far enough. If you are going to go alternate history wheres Germany and Brittan vs US and USSR? Germany and Japan vs US? At the moment the alternate history maps that feature Germany or Japan always have Germany or Japan fighting alone. Now I am not saying I want this every round but an allies Vs Axis battle would be great from time to time, I would also like to see them mix up the maps a little. Only a hand full of the maps resemble the reall battlegrounds they are named for, And since Random battle are already fantasy rounds full of prototype aircraft and planes that never faced one and other in combat lets go all out, I would also like to see some of the Arcade maps expanded to realistic battle sizes. Pacific hidden base for example, but the size of Krymsk with Japanese and US carrier groups at either end and hollow islands dotted across the map.At the moment the environments in RB are not that interesting, Arcade as some amazing maps however, Just because we are playing more realistic planes doesn't mean we cant have some fun with the places we are fighting.
No need for them in a fighter roll, As you can see when I came back to the runway I still had ammo. With good aim the wing pods are not needed to boost firepower so there is no reason to carry the extra weight.
I think you are underestimating the 20mm cannon on this thing. It seems to fire slow enough to conserve heaps of ammo but fast enough to do terrific damage. I have taken out 6 planes in one game and still had ammo for more.
Was not underestimating is at all, The 20mm 151 in the nose is great, Its why I don't put the wing pods on. I feel zero need to take them for extra firepower against aircraft. The nose cannon is all that's needed.

Quite easily as you can see as I don't consider it a matter to debate. The F-4 is a better fighter in RB without them, It is lethal in ground attack and bomber hunting in RB with them and in arcade you always have them as they make little difference to performance. Why is this a debate?
Nah. Even though I love Germany, this wouldn’t have helped. they already had air superiority. Erich Hartmann was the most successful ace in history, and the bf 109 shot down the most planes in wwii. Air superiority isn’t enough though.
The whole CAP thing sounds good on paper, but it's really not that great for survival. If someone is going to strafe someone on the runway, chances are they'll do it whether there's another fighter in the air or not. They'll more than likely end up dead doing it but that has never stopped anyone I've seen. Whether I'm the one on the runway or someone else is, the enemy will throw away all of their advantages for a shot at an easy kill. I mean it's definitely an advantage for you to have that allied fighter in the air, but it's not super important. The only thing you want to avoid is ever having more than one on the runway so if it comes down to it, you'll only lose one.
whe whole point is that if he strafes, he dies, and if he doesnt strafe, your teammate can stall him till you are combat ready :D both of them landing runs the risk of getting strafed in one pass without any chance to prevent it.
Silavite I sincerely thought about that exact same strategy, but looked like the engine on the 185 was damaged as badly as Magz's. A throttle cut plus spiral might kill the limited amount of energy he had, but I guess it is better than an aileron roll.
I would start maneuvering fight with bf109, first do vertical spiral and then start scissoring the bf109 untill I would have shot on him... This tactics usually work for me in ussr fighters in 1v1 fight with german planes. I dont fly I-185 though, so I may be wrong.

What Cinnabun said. Also, I wouldn't take what Magz says as gospel truth. I like watching his videos. He's entertaining, and a lot of the times he can be very informative, but sometimes he's just not. The bit at the end where he says, "and that's why you don't use your ailerons as a defensive maneuver" is just one example. Depending on the situation, performing aileron rolls (in conjunction with elevator and/or rudder) can be very effective defensive maneuvers. His opponent in this video was likely -two- (two? wtf.....too) damaged and/or not knowledgeable enough to perform the maneuvers in the way he needed to. One last point to make: The best defensive maneuver is to never allow an enemy on your tail in the first place. If you do end up with an enemy on your tail, there's no guarantee that you will be able to do anything to turn the tables. If you're interested in watching some good defensive maneuver videos look up Ze Hairy and watch some of his videos. He flies simulator battles, and the stuff he does is nearly godlike, but if you study what he does you can learn some things that you can apply to RB.

Now I better explain what you missed in my end comment. The pilot in question performed an aileron roll as a defensive maneuver to avoid my fire. In conjunction with elevator and/or rudder forming a barrel roll or other maneuver you are quite correct in stating is the right thing to do, However I did not say that a barrel roll or other maneuver was the wrong thing to do, I said "and that's why you don't aileron roll as a defensive maneuver". Aileron rolls are not a defensive maneuver, They are the beginning of a maneuver for rapid change in direction but on there own they are simply spinning the aircraft down its long axis, They do nothing to defend you from enemy fire and they burn energy making it easier for an attacking aircraft to close, Aileron rolls like the one shown are also the most common mistake I see from inexperienced pilots. Please don't assume that just because I say one maneuver is a bad idea that I mean all maneuvers related to it are also bad, You sound experienced so you should be aware that air combat is more fluid than that. I do agree with you that the best defence is to never allow an enemy your tail or allow anyone to shoot you in the first place so it could be said that the I-185 pilot made two mistakes at the end of this battle.
MagzTV Fair enough. I would just say that I don't think the enemy I-185 was trying only to roll. It looks like he was clearly using elevator and rudder at the same time as he was jinking all over the screen when you were shooting prior to your kill, otherwise you would have killed him much sooner. I think it's safer to assume he was just too damaged from his head on with your ally to do it successfully, and also probably not experienced or knowledgeable enough. Anyways, after reading what I wrote it's hard for me to say I didn't come across as abrasive and rude. I hope you don't take it as a personal attack or insult, as that's most definitely not how I intended it.
im coming back to wt after a break and i was wandering if there was a way to pilot in ground forces without needing to play without a tank? you used to be able to but now you need re-spawn points and it wont even let me join without a tank.
cubesinanutshell then you are going to get hindered by having to take an inferior plane than what others can, later on. getting the jump on tanks that just spawned is not a nice move anyway if you ask me :D world war mode will be your thing if it ever comes out
they weigh quite alot and they are only 15mm. i dont use gunpods on the g2 either, that bird can realy shift when you strip it from fuel and armament :D

While yes you can find the runners what about the players that are not trying to run but are trying to preposition themselves to a better location to take on superior forces? Those guys get shafted out of heroic last stands as a result of the orders system. The orders remove tactical elements of the game play and simply make the game more of an arcade wonderland than an actual battle. In my opinion they have cost War Thunder more than they have ever given it and are just one of the steps Gaijin has taken that have reduced RB to its current state.

Can you tell the difference between a player that is semi afk running and one that is trying to open a gap to get altitude and energy to get some chance of maybe winning the end fight. Most of the time you can't, Players on the "wining team" simply expect the last player to bend over for a good bit of unskilled butt rape when the fact that he is the last player alive indicates that maybe hes not unskilled at all, maybe that's why he is still alive. Here is something to keep in mind, Since this orders system has come into play I have not had a single interesting final battle or last stand attempt. Yet about 1 in 4 matches still has a high alt runner that has opened up enough of an advantage that the order makes no difference too him.. The orders have fixed nothing and have ruined interesting tactical game play and the chance for some of the best fights you could ever experience to even happen.

I know, If I was ground attacking I would take them but I rarely equip gunpods for anti fighter duties.

The thing I dislike about the british fighters is that their main guns are on the wings, requiring you to either get close or aim awkwardly :p

at that point theres realy nothing he couls have done... he waited for too long, everything he would have tryed would have been a gamble.

No, with a 33 minute battle on a map that size I just had to edit out a lot of the flying where nothing was really going on.

You should get some Bf109 g-6 gameplay, or the k-4

Also, I wouldn't take what Magz says as gospel truth. I like watching his videos. He's entertaining, and a lot of the times he can be very informative, but sometimes he's just not.
The bit at the end where he says, "and that's why you don't use your ailerons as a defensive maneuver" is just one example. Depending on the situation, performing aileron rolls (in conjunction with elevator and/or rudder) can be very effective defensive maneuvers. His opponent in this video was likely -two- (two? wtf.....too) damaged and/or not knowledgeable enough to perform the maneuvers in the way he needed to.
One last point to make: The best defensive maneuver is to never allow an enemy on your tail in the first place. If you do end up with an enemy on your tail, there's no guarantee that you will be able to do anything to turn the tables.
If you're interested in watching some good defensive maneuver videos look up Ze Hairy and watch some of his videos. He flies simulator battles, and the stuff he does is nearly godlike, but if you study what he does you can learn some things that you can apply to RB.

The pilot in question performed an aileron roll as a defensive maneuver to avoid my fire. In conjunction with elevator and/or rudder forming a barrel roll or other maneuver you are quite correct in stating is the right thing to do, However I did not say that a barrel roll or other maneuver was the wrong thing to do, I said "and that's why you don't aileron roll as a defensive maneuver". Aileron rolls are not a defensive maneuver, They are the beginning of a maneuver for rapid change in direction but on there own they are simply spinning the aircraft down its long axis, They do nothing to defend you from enemy fire and they burn energy making it easier for an attacking aircraft to close, Aileron rolls like the one shown are also the most common mistake I see from inexperienced pilots.
Please don't assume that just because I say one maneuver is a bad idea that I mean all maneuvers related to it are also bad, You sound experienced so you should be aware that air combat is more fluid than that. I do agree with you that the best defence is to never allow an enemy your tail or allow anyone to shoot you in the first place so it could be said that the I-185 pilot made two mistakes at the end of this battle.

I would just say that I don't think the enemy I-185 was trying only to roll. It looks like he was clearly using elevator and rudder at the same time as he was jinking all over the screen when you were shooting prior to your kill, otherwise you would have killed him much sooner.
I think it's safer to assume he was just too damaged from his head on with your ally to do it successfully, and also probably not experienced or knowledgeable enough.
Anyways, after reading what I wrote it's hard for me to say I didn't come across as abrasive and rude. I hope you don't take it as a personal attack or insult, as that's most definitely not how I intended it.

im coming back to wt after a break and i was wandering if there was a way to pilot in ground forces without needing to play without a tank? you used to be able to but now you need re-spawn points and it wont even let me join without a tank.
i belive you have to select a plane that costs less SP then the tank you bring and you can use that instantly.
so if you don't play tanks you screwed?

they weigh quite alot and they are only 15mm. i dont use gunpods on the g2 either, that bird can realy shift when you strip it from fuel and armament :D
Not for fighter duties, I only strap on the pods when I am going multi-role and intend to hit ground targets.

+Barry Yu Funny thing is I hate orders. While yes you can find the runners what about the players that are not trying to run but are trying to preposition themselves to a better location to take on superior forces? Those guys get shafted out of heroic last stands as a result of the orders system.
The orders remove tactical elements of the game play and simply make the game more of an arcade wonderland than an actual battle. In my opinion they have cost War Thunder more than they have ever given it and are just one of the steps Gaijin has taken that have reduced RB to its current state.

Can you tell the difference between a player that is semi afk running and one that is trying to open a gap to get altitude and energy to get some chance of maybe winning the end fight. Most of the time you can't, Players on the "wining team" simply expect the last player to bend over for a good bit of unskilled butt rape when the fact that he is the last player alive indicates that maybe hes not unskilled at all, maybe that's why he is still alive.
Here is something to keep in mind, Since this orders system has come into play I have not had a single interesting final battle or last stand attempt. Yet about 1 in 4 matches still has a high alt runner that has opened up enough of an advantage that the order makes no difference too him.. The orders have fixed nothing and have ruined interesting tactical game play and the chance for some of the best fights you could ever experience to even happen.
