Generally, I'd say every mainline sonic game has at least one track that's memorable, only ones I can't name or recognize the song from is "Lost world" and "Rise of Lyric" but if I'm being honest... I don't consider them mainline games. Frontiers: "I'm here" Forces: "Fist bump"
Sonic Lost world has an incredible sound track. Don't dismiss that one. Also other notable exceptions from the 2010s are Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed and Sonic Team Racing. All of these have some great OSTs. My personal favorites are Sonic Adventure 1 and Sonic Unleashed. Still I love Sonic 2 and 3's OST as well as Mania
May I add to your video? What first grabbed my attention to Frontiers' OST wasn't the boss themes lmao, it was Cyberspace, yeah I know... weird choice but bare with me for a sec.. When people say that Unleashed's level OST is better than Frontiers, it's just because the music fits the environment of the level, Jungle joyride feeling tribal and tropical, Shammar has the feeling of Egyptian/Arabic, and Roof top run night feels like Italy Same goes for classic Sonic, take Angle island as an example, the music literally feels like you're in an island But if you look at Frontiers, the music is cool af but it does feel a bit lifeless because of reusing Green hill and chemical plat and Sky sanctuary again (the same goes for the new city level because they used it multiple times) This explains why colors is the only exception from the 2010s, because it was the last game to have original stages with music that goes along with the theme You can say the same for superstars, Jun's tracks are bad because they are simply just lifeless and don't feel like they belong to the theme of each level Thanks for reading this very long comment :D
kinda disagree with cyberspace. the music is amazing and does fit with the stages. even tho the stages themselves are reused, the context around them helps the songs fit with the stages. as well as the stages themselves looking a lot different with the cyber aesthetic and unique lighting in them present.
@@mrmelonman2893 I never said that cyberspace is bad, I agree that it's amazing, but to me personally, they feel like good EDM track, not level themes, Sorry but I couldn't feel the context myself :(
Woah woah don’t discredit lost world and Generations like that cause there’s plenty of bangers to be heard those games. Bro has not listened to the Big Arms remix and it SHOWS
I remember very few songs from LW, and Gens doesn't count since it's all remixes of existing songs. Not to say they're bad or anything (they're not), but a soundtrack of remixes shouldn't be put in the same conversation as actual OSTs. Original SoundTracks.
I really liked speed jungle act 2’s music by Hidenori Shoji, although a little too short and slightly flat it sounds like a early version of a Sonic cd stage
“After Sonic Colors, Sonic music is just mid” And that’s where I stopped watching. Rip on Superstars all you want, but I consider Frontiers to be an exception in terms of being forgettable outside of the vocal themes and some of the cyber space tracks. Forces gets so much shit for it’s instrumentation choice and synth quality, but the Melodies themselves are so fucking good (even Green Hill).
it's pretty understandable when you compare new gen games to the older ones, 9 times out of 10 the older OSTs are conveying more and contributing better to the overall experience. (imo)
With the whole 2000s having such great music is very understandable since it has music that makes me want to replay them almost every other week with various genres as I continue to listen to them. Despite being dubbed the 'Dark Age' of Sonic, you can't lie that Wild Canyon be bumping.
Also funnily enough there were 13 music composers for superstars with tee lopes not even making more than 4 original tracks of his own, again, please do research man
It’s just a shift in genre, older Sonic tracks have the advantage of being *old* so with that comes iconicity and being exposed to said track for years and years, granting memorability alongside that nostalgia kick for good measure. 06 music does something to me, it instantly takes me back to a certain time in my life so I can admit I’m FAR from being objective when I’m speaking on tracks from that game. But “modern” Sonic music (kinda depends on what modern even means) typically just has a genre shift, so as someone who doesn’t particularly care for electronic or dubsteppy tracks, a lot of the stuff from say, Forces doesn’t really do it for me. Meanwhile everyone goes feral for Frontiers’ boss themes, despite those taking obvious hints from the 00’s rock era of Sonic - so once again we’ve arrived at nostalgia being a HUGE element in what makes something memorable or familiar for our brains. With time, and as another generation of Sonic fans grow up to write video essays on why Forces was an underrated masterpiece or whatever tf else, you’ll start seeing more appreciation for more recent tracks prop up. We’re old as dirt and expect a certain *sound* from the franchise, so whether we like it or not our perspective on the topic is gonna be rooted in a ton of irrational biases.
In my humble opinion, I feel like 06 and unleashed had the most memorable soundtrack even sonic colors. And I do like the sonic 2 OST right next to sonic 3 and knuckles, the reason I think they lost their touch is: because it’s a little dated, and they’re trying too hard to hold onto the nostalgia
I think Generations has a good soundtrack, regardless if it's all remixes or not. Both versions had original songs that were not great, but when they remixed it, it got awesome. Seaside Hill Modern, Death Egg Robot, both versions of City Escape, Casino Night Modern, Mushroom Hill Modern, Big Arms, Radical Highway Classic, Tropical Resort Modern. All these remixes improve what we got in the past 20 years. There's still remixes that improve upon the originals, even if I hadn't mentioned them. Lost World has a good soundtrack too, IMO. I don't think Sea Bottom Segue is the only good song in that game. I think there's lots of bangers in Lost World. Windy Hill Zone 1, Desert Ruins Zone 1 and 4/2 and 3 on the 3DS version, Honeycomb Highway, Sugar Lane, Tropical Coast Zone 1, Frozen Factory Zone 1, Snowball Waltz, Double Down, Silent Forest Zone 1, Midnight Owl, Sky Road Zone 1, Dragon Dance, all the Deadly Six themes and the final boss music, which has a bit of rock in it as well. Even Sonic Forces has its selection of good songs. Good examples being Luminous Forest, Modern Sonic's Chemical Plant act, and the last phase of the final boss theme. I can't say for Superstars, because I haven't heard the music of that game.
I recently watched longplays of most canonical sonic games from heroes to frontiers the only tracks I remember from those are planet wisp, some tracks from '06, honeycomb highway, 2 songs from frontiers DLC 3, and 1 song from rush adventure I also kinda remember the werehog battle music from HD unleashed, but only because it played all the fucking time
Exactly right. But to me, it's more about the music being catchy and fitting the tone of the situation. Flying Battery felt like it fit a gigantic airship and had a fantastic melody. Sandopolis felt like an oppressive desert. And hot take, Press Factory Act 1 also fits the idea of the level and keeps up a catchy groove. Frozen Base Act 1 and Egg Fortress Act 2 as well. Side note, you were FANTASTIC in that Carnival Night clip and the Splash Hill clip. You really should post speedruns. Modern Sonic music... I'm including Forces and Frontiers, the music is just not catchy and not fitting in general. But Lost World was great, so I disagree there. Windy Hill? Frozen Factory? Come on. They had the theming and the catchiness and the instrumentation. I recommend having a re-listen. Frontiers just does not nail it for having generic backgound mood music in the overworld and Cyberspace, and people only talk about the boss themes and "Flowing" and maaaybe Ouranos's Revisited tracks. I do think it's possible to nail the Genesis sound in classic games even today. Sonic Hoshi and Sonic Classic 2 really felt right.
@@mrmelonman2893 Okay. Name 5 catchy and fitting Cyberspace tracks or Forces tracks. There are like 30 levels, so no problem, right? Same as if I were to say "name 5 catchy classic Sonic tracks", I *bet* people would instantly be able to do that.

I mean... You're definitely right, but at the same time I have my questions. Sonic music especially in the last few years has allowed multiple voices in the soundtrack, Team Sonic Racing, Frontiers and Superstars had multiple composers. Yeah, Ohtani has not delivered the bangers that he used to but you can only do so many remixes of Green Hill for the entirety of the 10's. Yeah, lost world had some good songs but forgettable in the long run... Sonic Runners on the other hand, had a ton of bangers, and was still Ohtani. I don't think that it's the composers the ones to blame (Except for Jun, I love the man, but get him away from classic) but it's the fault of the games. Forces had what, 5 level astetics? We revisited those levels time and time again, how could they get any personality it the composer needed to create a different song for every level that lasted 5 seconds? Then every other game that revisited a older level again and again and again. Frontiers ost is great for the open zones and the bosses because the song could have their own identity and not just be a song to be on the Sky sanctuary level again.
The soundtracks were great before, and the only main reason why I even tried to spend about 100$ for a used copy of SA2's soundtrack is because In my opinion I was quite sure that I wouldn't be wasting any money while perchasing it, that soundtrack would be worth it. The Crush 40 lead singer/songwritter (Johnny Gioeli) admitted in an interview video that Live and learn is the song that that rock band is the most well known for after the person who he was talking to in that interview questioned him about that, and no wonder over 1000 people worldwide (including me) were building up a strong demand to Paramount for it to be in the Sonic 3 movie. The most wanted song from the Sonic games to be playing during the climax of that upcoming movie! Almost none of the ones from the newer Sonic games are so iconic and wanted by fans to be in it, just old ones from the 2000s because of how much better they are especially when they get compared to the new ones. Though I agree that of the soundtracks of new Sonic games not being so good, the soundtrack that Sonic Frontiers has is an exception to that.
I just have to give a shoutout to Fighting Onward (Space Port) from Sonic Forces. Most of that soundtrack is bad, but Fighting Onward is genuinely a great drum 'n bass bangar and one my favorite vocal tracks in the serieis.
i could go ON about this, i remember when i said this, i might've gotten dogpiled on twitter Everything post Colors has felt off to me, and even now, Frontiers' overworld themes, Titan themes, and Second Wind are the best tracks from its OST, which is a minority to the cyberspace tracks The cyberspace tracks just sound like more of the avatar music in Forces, which boils down to some of the same soundy music, they rarely change drum patterns or ideas I feel that the EDM of the series has diminished GREATLY from the heights of 06, Unleashed, or Colors and most of the remixes currently sound like some of the most "cookie-cutter" soft remixes Gens' remixes took the original songs and drummified it even more, and throwing bass slaps just anywhere, it just doesn't feel... well thought out, but there are some incredible remixes there too, like Door Into The Summer
Not only the music, but the games in general. Even Frontiers, that sounds and plays something unique, feels they still playing safe (in overall game). Superstars have good ideas, but feels they made a checklist of a classic Sonic game. That's why I'm cautious about the next Sonic game (the next mainline game), because I don't know if they'll gonna be full experimental or continue to be safe (not only Sonic Team, but also SEGA).
"genesis midi soundchip" should i even mention that they used a modified genesis soundchip for Sonic Forces? Also, uhh, saying "Tee Lopes good, Jun Senoue bad" is pretty disrespectful to other composers who composed for Sonic (like Rintaro Soma or Kenichi Tokoi). The music is a lot more subjective topic than gameplay or story but Sonic's music usually delivers and if it doesn't... well, that's just a rare case. (also both SLW's and Forces' OSTs are bangers man.... did you even hear Honeycomb Highway, Juice Archipelago, Snowball Waltz, Midnight Owl (more like Peaknight Owl) or any of the avatar stages' music???)
Yeah, ngl. However sometimes it can be for different reasons. For example, i like Wild Ridge (track for 1st Tornado stage) and vibes of Serious Sam TFE and 3 made it more memorable. Tracks like Area 99 and Metal Supremacy are on their own cool & Metal Supremacy accompanies my favourite boss fight in entire Omens.
@@woag4974 yeah they completely forgot about it because they do not bother to look into who composed it and sees their favorite sonic tuner keep repeating the name they'll hate it only because their favorite sonic tubers hate it
Yes. Yes I Did Just Pause the video to comment this. I used to Blast Wing Fortress Zone as my Rallying Theme when Sieging Enemy Hills in King of the Hill matches at the Airsoft Battle Field back in the day.
Honestly, I really enjoy the Sonic 4, Sonic Forces, and Sonic Superstars soundtracks. At least, mostly. All the Classic Sonic songs from Forces suck, but everything else is good. But I honestly enjoy these soundtracks.
For real. Say what you will about Sonic Lost World gameplay. But you DO NOT have a right to talk shit about it's music which is objectively good and can be memorable.
I think sonic lost world's music is really solid! you have: dr eggman showdow, dragon dance, frozen factory and sea bottom seague. my god the more I listen the more I like it
i need people to stop calling the thing jun uses the sonic 1 soundfont cuz its nowhere near that he uses a plugin called vacuum and xpand!2 on protools and just uses a sample of the sonic 1-2 drums
When I first heard the Superstars soundtrack, I thought it was ripped from Sonic 4, so I went to check and none of the tracks shown in Superstars were there. You know you made bad music when someone thinks it's a rip from Sonic 4.
I think they (specifically Jun Senoue with his take on Sonic Superstars' music) are taking the quote "limitations fosters creativity" way too seriously and way too literally. Setting limitations does force you to become creative but being too limiting (i.e. be confined to using an imitation of the Genesis soundchip in this day and age) is just as bad, maybe even worse.
Sonic Frontiers boss themes left a mark, but the level soundtrack was completely ass, those things didn't even make you want to get to the goal... That's what I liked from prior games, the music in almost every stage complemented the level desing, it was part of the experience.
It seems that Jun Sunoe has reached about the same point as Miyamoto, where his creativity and gumption are dead, and all that's left is weird, rigid ideas that only serve to take away from whatever media they're a part of. I aspire to *never* let age turn me into someone my right mind would be disappointed in. Also, in regards to Sonic Forces music... "No, Patrick, tires screeching on pavement is not an instrument."
Jun gets way too much hate because everyone i know who played sonic origins didn't notice anything wrong with the ost. Why? Because they are more casual sonic fans. The problem is that this is something the sonic fanbase has been bandwagoning at lately as i never heard any hate and in fact i see people genuinely enjoy his music until the biased fanbase started attacking on him and suddenly its the only opinion you're supposed to have and otherwise youre a loser. I don't bandwagon so im immune from such bs. Theyre treating his music as if its worse than o6 game -_- in fact his music is actually more memorable because i can't help but keep unintentionally playing the melodies of those music
Even I feel with Frontiers rock music it’s still feels kinda “samey”. Sure this is a long time since 2000s where modern Sonic had this “vocal storytelling”, but most other media and franchises have their own vibe of it now. Like…Sonic doesn’t own rock. Does he have his own variant of it, Yes. But it’s not universal and it’s one of those things where “Y’all should’ve had this straightened out years ago, to where’s now everyone has their own version of ‘Rock’”. I can’t explain it well, but I feel Sonic needs to find his own “Rock” again that shouldn’t be “Oh, it reminds me of 2000s” as a crutch y’know?
You comment sounded like you are saying sonic frontiers vocal rock songs sounds like the old rock themes... wich i disagree fully. I dont know if they want to keep this trend, but at least for this game, they clearly have innovated with something i dont remember they ever have used before. 9 string guitar (or at least something that sound like a 9 string guitar). As a Doom fan, i loved the surprise, my dream is to have a 9 string guitar to mess around with and make random sonic frontiers/doom eternal'ish riffs. But, most of your comment does in fact have a truth... today i really cant say what could there be the "Sonic Rock"... Even doom has its own rock now too, they call it Argent Metal.
@@silverstar1614 bro didnt say no truths. comparing sonic frontiers titans songs to 2000s rock, its a night and day difference. of course a sonic ost in that genre is going to have that influence, but to say it sounds the same is bluntly wrong.

That’s fine, it’s better than the structure and execution of the game.
There are two types of tracks I have on my workout mix: Sonic and naruto, and do you know why?
Because His World and Silhouette still go hard to this day😎
Gens has an amazing soundtrack, Fist Bump and Infinite are amazing too. And bro forgot about TSR, such a amazing and underrated soundtrack.
Unfortunately he's right about Superstars, when it slaps it slaps, but when it's ass, it really is ass
I still rock out to some Sonic R OST every morning to wake up
Bro, the second to last game literally had a song with lyrics that said 'f*ck the pain away'.
Don't know about you, but I'm gonna remember that.
You should watch the video before you comment.
Hey @Nativefall, I can definitely agree with you. you say it's in the right section that's how i do feel tho many of sonic fans nowaday stuck with the same old music like Rock & Metal they don't open his heart to keep up with the world like I do Electronic Dance Music (EDM) within Sonic The Hedgehog it's can tell me why many sonic fans are toxic and can't reach the modern world nowaday.
Well, you have to admit that Lost World had some bangers
I don't know, Generations music is some of the best.
its all remixes that are better than the original. by default its amazing
Sonic fans trying to find the most tiny details to argue about so they can make videos :
Generally, I'd say every mainline sonic game has at least one track that's memorable, only ones I can't name or recognize the song from is "Lost world" and "Rise of Lyric" but if I'm being honest... I don't consider them mainline games.
Frontiers: "I'm here"
Forces: "Fist bump"
When people say that Unleashed's level OST is better than Frontiers, it's just because the music fits the environment of the level, Jungle joyride feeling tribal and tropical, Shammar has the feeling of Egyptian/Arabic, and Roof top run night feels like Italy
Same goes for classic Sonic, take Angle island as an example, the music literally feels like you're in an island
But if you look at Frontiers, the music is cool af but it does feel a bit lifeless because of reusing Green hill and chemical plat and Sky sanctuary again (the same goes for the new city level because they used it multiple times)
This explains why colors is the only exception from the 2010s, because it was the last game to have original stages with music that goes along with the theme
You can say the same for superstars, Jun's tracks are bad because they are simply just lifeless and don't feel like they belong to the theme of each level
Thanks for reading this very long comment :D
kinda disagree with cyberspace. the music is amazing and does fit with the stages. even tho the stages themselves are reused, the context around them helps the songs fit with the stages. as well as the stages themselves looking a lot different with the cyber aesthetic and unique lighting in them present.
There is something that we can both agree upon, it's that Sonic is cool.
Sonic generations and forces modern stages and bosses ost is fire.
Agreed with everything but why you masacred fist bump like that bruh 😢
I love Sonic forces ost tho 😭

Rip on Superstars all you want, but I consider Frontiers to be an exception in terms of being forgettable outside of the vocal themes and some of the cyber space tracks.

it's pretty understandable when you compare new gen games to the older ones, 9 times out of 10 the older OSTs are conveying more and contributing better to the overall experience. (imo)
With the whole 2000s having such great music is very understandable since it has music that makes me want to replay them almost every other week with various genres as I continue to listen to them. Despite being dubbed the 'Dark Age' of Sonic, you can't lie that Wild Canyon be bumping.
Infinite and im here are pretty memorable for modern sonics era
20:27 you lost me when you bring up Sonic Generations.
uuhhhhhhh... the video doesn't go that long...
@@demongamer_IX 10:10 or 12:59 I think he is talking about either part
"Modern Sonic should be exclusively rock"
HOW YOU DARE TO IMPLY THAT ORCHESTRAS AND SYNTHS ARE BAD!
They are bad especially synths.
lost world has some bangers like honeycomb highway
Sonic has such memorable music
on GOD
Dude must have listened to that Sonic labyrinth music 😂
I recently watched longplays of most canonical sonic games from heroes to frontiers
the only tracks I remember from those are planet wisp, some tracks from '06, honeycomb highway, 2 songs from frontiers DLC 3, and 1 song from rush adventure
I also kinda remember the werehog battle music from HD unleashed, but only because it played all the fucking time
Exactly right.

Lets all admit that Sonic Generations Green Hill Act 2 has stuck so much cuz its super iconic.
Most of that soundtrack is bad, but Fighting Onward is genuinely a great drum 'n bass bangar and one my favorite vocal tracks in the serieis.
i could go ON about this, i remember when i said this, i might've gotten dogpiled on twitter
Everything post Colors has felt off to me, and even now, Frontiers' overworld themes, Titan themes, and Second Wind are the best tracks from its OST, which is a minority to the cyberspace tracks
The cyberspace tracks just sound like more of the avatar music in Forces, which boils down to some of the same soundy music, they rarely change drum patterns or ideas
I feel that the EDM of the series has diminished GREATLY from the heights of 06, Unleashed, or Colors and most of the remixes currently sound like some of the most "cookie-cutter" soft remixes
Gens' remixes took the original songs and drummified it even more, and throwing bass slaps just anywhere, it just doesn't feel... well thought out, but there are some incredible remixes there too, like Door Into The Summer
9:53 yo where is this sonic symphony at bgs footage from?
it’s the announcement concert
And here i am hoping that sonic moves further away from rock because adventure 2-shadow music all felt exactly the same to me
"genesis midi soundchip" should i even mention that they used a modified genesis soundchip for Sonic Forces?
LW's music is forgettable trash and the avatar music is tryhard hipster trash.
I think sonic omens has pretty memorable music 😎

Weight of the World carries the entire OST on its back.
Yeah, ngl. However sometimes it can be for different reasons.
For example, i like Wild Ridge (track for 1st Tornado stage) and vibes of Serious Sam TFE and 3 made it more memorable.
Tracks like Area 99 and Metal Supremacy are on their own cool & Metal Supremacy accompanies my favourite boss fight in entire Omens.
that piece of shit literally only has 1 memorable song, and its the one that's stolen from another game for fucks sakes.

I like Sonic 4's ost. I also like Sonic Chronicles ost. Then again my standards are kind of low when it comes to Sonic music.

And rintaro soma also did music for superstars and its pretty much as good as tee lopes
Segue (Sea Bottom Segue) is said like segway (Don't want to come off as mean, love your stuff man, hope you're having a good day)
Sonic Frontiers boss themes left a mark, but the level soundtrack was completely ass, those things didn't even make you want to get to the goal... That's what I liked from prior games, the music in almost every stage complemented the level desing, it was part of the experience.
I thought the thumbnail was Sonic with boobs for a second there.
11:47 gun fortress should have been a bettet example
Wow this was something I was thinking about on my drive home yesterday
I think Team Sonic Racing ost was pretty great
It seems that Jun Sunoe has reached about the same point as Miyamoto, where his creativity and gumption are dead, and all that's left is weird, rigid ideas that only serve to take away from whatever media they're a part of.
I aspire to *never* let age turn me into someone my right mind would be disappointed in.
Also, in regards to Sonic Forces music...
"No, Patrick, tires screeching on pavement is not an instrument."
Titans music: "Wait, what?"
Lost World's ost is not the best or anything, but imo it's slept on.
Honestly think 3D Blast Genesis OST is super underrated

5:45 this wierd because act 1 and act 3 of this dong fit perfetly with the level and act 2 is great song
