I have to say your battle reports are the best formatting and execution I have seen in any batrep, you really make it easy to follow along when you don't really know the rules. You are really starting to convince me I need to spend my money on Warmachine instead of 40k!
To answer your question at the end, medium base infantry in general belong in the second line. The standard order of battle is small base infantry in the front line, then medium based infantry and ligt jacks if khador owned any lights behind them and Heavy Warjacks behind them and your Warcaster in the back using distance and the rest of your army to protect him/her.
Great batrep once again! I'm Khador myself and I never use shock troopers but with Irusk2 they are awesome marching up with the shield wall order & then having some melee units hide behind them like Doom Reavers. Irusk2 lets you pass through friendly and have LOS in his command area thanks to his Martial Discipline ability. so basically creep up then charge through. Vlad1 & the Devastator are awesome together since minimum focus is needed. Just used those 2 for Hardcore at Lock & Load 2012!

Really reaaallly enjoying the good camera, the light which is present enough to allow blur-less recording and the overall quality. The music is well place, the editing is smooth, the narration is well thought and not redundant. Not minding the non-painted minis since I'm used to it at my club. Keep them coming! Well played! Cryx player: take a minimum unit of Bane Thralls at this size game, especially with the UA its plenty, and don't bother with Cankerworm, unless you had a particular devious strategy that just never gelled for you (entirely possible knowing Cryx players). Use the points to buy two more chickens. Cast spells every turn, arc them all over the place. Dirty D is about the debuffs. Balance protecting your Skarlock with actually getting to use it. Don't bunch up your Scrap Thralls - and if you didn't realize, they are ALL solos, you just happen to get them for a 1/3pt each. Also, I've seen Cryx recover from similar circumstances, would not have forfeited. However, I'm not going to be echoing some of the criticisms here, as I've seen some similar things going on with very crafty Cryx players. Miranda: yeah, Signs & Portents roxxorz. I love Vlad. I usually take him with Iron Fangs, though. Also, for another use of the Devestator, remember the boulder in Raiders of the Lost Ark? That's the Devestator and the enemy warcaster is Indy. Works great marshalled, too. Keep it closed and run every turn straight for the enemy 'caster, Bulldoze stuff out of the way, Rain of Death when you get there and boost the damage. Take two so if they decide to invest enough resources to stop one there's still another one to take its place. And take advantage of the distraction to set up your real assassination run. Man-O-War Shocktroopers are also great for screening the Butcher. I haven't got a lot of use out of mine, either. Going to be using them more and I'll let you know.
My battle reports have been against a couple of different players so far. I hope to play against some of the guys from my FLGS soon. As far as markers I am currently using a Quartet Dry erase marker (if that is what you were asking).
Impressive use of the Devastator, I must say! It literally wasn't until I watched this video that I realized how effective it can be in an anti-infantry role; I always discredited it as just a really hard-to-dislodge road block. Thanks for the insight :0) Oh, if you like the surprise speed you get out of the Devastator with Vlad's feat you might look into trying out Karchev the Terrible. More of a heavy-hitter play style than Vlad and Sorscha, but lots of fun with a 'jack-heavy list! Enjoy!
I've only recently started playing but, is there something I missed with you rolling 3 dice and only keeping the best 2 for damage rolls? I'm also fairly sleep deprived, so it is quite possible I did.
Spray templates don't automatically hit what's under them. You have to roll an attack roll vs DEF against any target under them. Blast templates, however, do hit whatever is under them (after the scatter). (See universal spray rules.) Sprays only auto-hit in Warhammer. I do agree though that I was wrong in that you CAN actually target stealth, they just miss.
Good job with sings and portents and the winterguard. The winterguard can be a rather powerful unit against jacks or infantry, their versatility is amazing. CRA with signs and portents and the boost from kovnik joe and do serious damage to heavies. Or do what you did and just lay out grape shot after graph shot and get that coverage hitting numerous models to break through the tough rolls. A very good job and a job well done.
You have made without a doubt the best battle report I have ever see for any game . I like the camera work the best . It is not static you move it around with a purpose and take. The blow by blow commentary is outstanding and it's fast . Its to bad I just sold my Khador too . I would like to ask you what version of Warmachine do you like better MK1 or MK2 . Hi Miranda! Nice batrep. I've been following your vids for some time now. Instead of shocktroopers you could use demo corps. They run or charge most turns, so they get into a fight real quick, and they kick ass. Alternatively a min unit of Uhlans are great for flanking with their SPD8, and cost the same points. For 8 pts you can also get 10 pikemen who are really good on the offense, especially with signs and portents.
Yet another note from a Cryx player: those scrap thralls, even when bought in packs of 3, are not units; their type is still Solo. When you buy 3 scrap thralls, you are buying 3 solos for that single point - he didn't have to pack them together.

You just have to love the Winter Guard with UA and Joe during a round of Signs and Portents. 8'' spray with 4d6 dropping the lowest followed with a 3d6 dropping the lowest on a pow 10 is just nasty!
Excellent video construction and pretty good lists. I do wonder about your opponents however. What exactly was the Cryx player doing with the lateral move of his slayer and cankerworm. They should have been enjoying tasty winterburgers not fleeing. I wondered similar things about some of the Cygnar player's choices in your first batrep. Either they are new, not very good, or throwing games to impress you. Not implying you'd need such help, your choices have been pretty solid for the most part.
Great battle reports. I always take a Devastator with Vlad. If the opportunity presents itself, it's awesome giving him three focus on Vlad's feat turn so he can dish out even more punishment after Rain of Death. However this isn't always an option since Vlad uses his focus for himself or signs and portents. Be careful with Deneghra and her influence spell. She can use it to get your shock troopers to beat the crap out of each other. With them having reach it's even more dangerous.
These are great battle reports. You put a lot of effort into this, and it really shows. Wish the background music was a LITTLE bit quieter, but other than that these are fantastic!
Respectfully I must disagree with you. The rule of stealth is simply "Ranged and magic attacks declared against this model when the point of origin of the attack is greater than 5" away automatically miss" - pg.34 MKII Rulebook. Basically you can target a stealth model, but your shot will automatically miss (or in the case of AOE deviate), sprays however ignore stealth. The Privateer Press Forums has an Infernal confirmation on this as well.
I just want to point out, on the last spray... All attacks are simultaneous, so the last Thrall DOES get a tough roll, as the bearer is not actually destroyed until all the attacks under the template are resolved. Also, with sprays, you are technically supposed to roll all the hits under the template, then the damage rolls after. as per Prime, p. 245

I usually explain stealth as not being able to target the model from more than 5" away. Then the guys at my FLGS correct me by saying "you can still target them, the attack just automatically misses" However, AOEs and Spray templates automatically hit whatever's under them, regardless of stealth or concealment (trenches are a different story though). WarGamerGirl's strategy was sound.
Signs and portents spell from Vlad gives extra die on both attack and damage rolls for all friendly models in his ctrl area for a round. The lowest die is discarded.
on army composition: Since the Manhunter did not do much for you in this match (and has not in the others that I have seen) perhaps it would be worth swapping it out for the Mechanik UA, so that they can repair your Man-O-Wars, making them tremendously survivable. Otherwise you are taking a 3 point unit to support only one jack in this list. Your videos are well put together, and I look forward to seeing more from you. :)
nice battle report :D the MoW are indeed slow, but what they did in that game was draw attention away from the real killers - the winter guard. having a somewhat pricy unit with a powerful presence is a sound tactic in distracting the opponent. in one of my khador lists i field doom reavers to screen the advance of kayazy. giving your opponent a hard time to prioritize targets means that they need to spend resources. :D keep playing and bring glory to the motherland!
very good batrep. I was surprised that the cryx player was not more aggressive. And in my experience the shock troopers are much more of a brick unit, especially with Iron flesh on them. their guns are nice, but not what I would consider great by any stretch, especially since no khador caster has snipe.

Love the battle reports; well produced and great commentary. I'm sure video editing takes a very long time. But getting more content out at least once per week will increase viewership and subscriber count a lot. So i recommend filming and editing 2-3 months worth of videos, then post 1 per week. This gives you ample time to film and edit and creates the illusion that you're posting a lot of new content when it's really filmed 1 or 2 months ago. Keep up the good work!
Ice report, but I wanted to point out that the 3 Scrap Thralls are not, in fact, a unit, but still all solos. They're just bought in sets of 3. This could have made a big difference since they wouldn't need to be so bunched up. And yes, that Skarlock should be on a small base.
Last comment, I promise. The Devastator is a pretty good 'jack to have 'jack marshaled under some casters. As pVlad's feat only affects 'jacks in his battle group it would not work on a 'jack being 'jack marshaled by something else. Then again, signs and portents is practically a feet of it's own, and that extra focus you don't have to waste on the Devastator can be used elsewhere. It just comes down to if you need that extra focus or not and if it's worth losing the use of pVlad's feat.
Taking the Devastator with a Jack Marshal would remove him from Vlad's battlegroup, and therefor the benefits of the feat. You could take a Koldun Lord, though. Even though he is not used as a Jack Marshal, he can provide the one focus for the Devvy via Powerbooster. And the Shocktrooper's main benefit lies in being Defensive. At Arm 21 in Shieldwall and 8 boxes - they at least take some concentrated effort to remove. And they provide a good screen to most Khadoran casters.

I used to think people only went bat shit for these batreps because of the pretty cute girl factor. But now I see that you have a really smooth camera with a nice stabilizer built in, and pretty good editing skills. What kind of camera do you use? Keep up the good work, I've subbed.
Agree that Vlad plus Winter Guard plus Joe is awsome! Blood of Kings is also and amazing spell. With a war dog and BoKs, Vlad becomes defense 20 and is nearly impossible to kill :)
Jack Marshalls ARE great. Take the Man O War Kovnik and Berserkers though. Activate the Kovnik, use Drive and then let the Jacks charge in for free with boosted melee attack & damage rolls. You can use a Koldun Lord if you just want the charge for the Devastator and have another spell caster. Strakhov is fun too, I'm about to get Torch for him.
I use a Cannon HV40. It uses tape so it's a little more effort to get into the computer than a straight to drive camera, but I already owned it and it's treated me well.
As a fellow Khador player let me tell you that what she is doing is completely legal The spell she is using to allow this is Signs and Portents. All attack rolls and damage rolls that are done inside his control range get an extra die to roll, dropping the lowest number. If you notice, she was dropping the lowest die every time she used it. Also, the black die she rolled against the 'jacks was just for hit location. After watching the video twice I can tell you that everything she did was legal.
Concerning your Manowar Shocktroopers: in my humble opinion the schocktroopers are to be considered fire-magnets. Basically you put them on the board to absorb enemy fire as they advance slow and steady towards the enemy. They actually can take the hits, as the have an insane armour for a unit as long as they are locked in shield wall formation. And your enemy WILL shoot at them, because he knows, what'll happen, when they get in CC. MAT 7, P+S 14, Reach and Combined Attack: NOT PRETTY!!!
Ehem! Skarlock Thralls are on small bases. See pages: 199 of Prime Mk.II or p. 116 of your Cryx Forces book. If you received a medium base in error, the Privateer Press Parts Portal will most likely send you the appropriate sized base.

The banes should have ran to set up charges for the following turn as they wouldn't have had to worry about either grape shot or rain of death the following turn since denny's feat shuts down special attacks, of which grape shot and rain of death are both forms of.
I'd like to point out for the Cryx player, Scrap Thralls are not a unit. They have no leader, and are classified as solos. You do not need to deploy them together. I've found that having a wide screen of individual thralls is a hand deterrent. Food for thought.
Excellent battle report. It was extremely one sided though! It seems like you are getting better at using Khador by understanding the different uses of the units you field.
Cryx player gave up way too early :(. He had quite a few options for a nasty counterattack but I guess seeing half your army vaporized in one round can be rough. Well played and look forward to seeing a rematch!
Used pVlad for the 1st time last night but my dice rolls abandoned me even with S&P up :( That was in both games i played. 25pts against Everblight then 25pts agains Circle or Orboros.

Great idea Miniwargaming does that but it does cause issues with rule changes. Hell they are still posting videos for 5th edition rules for 40k and here we are in 6th edition rules now. But I am glad you didnt say film naked LOL... although with her looks it would increase viewers LOL
I think you missed a rule in there regarding stealth and spray/blast weapons. You can't actually target them with ANY ranged attack. Yes, a spray attack can hurt them - but you can't AIM at them. This means that with spray attacks you have to target something (even if you know they are out of range) on the OTHER side of them, something without stealth, naturally.
The Cryx player needs to learn that he's playing one of the factions that can still win with 1 model on the board. Should not have given up that early.
that was one of the best battle reports ive seen, that bieng said that was one of the worst cryx list deployment and spacing ive seen, skarlock unused banes clustered an then forfiting, should of played to the last box.
Such a one sided game!!! I think the Cryx player commited his Bane Thralls too soon and bunching them together made it even worse. Without any ranged support that Cryx army was gone after two turns.
BatRep style is very informative and orderly. I like how you present it. However, I found myself saying many times, "What are you doing??" during the Cryx player's turn. Thats ok, he (?) just needs more games under his belt. Hint for the Cryx player ...dont bunch up your units brother.
I feel bad for the Cryx player, he must be really new, and I know how disheartening it can be to lost that many models in one round! I'm sure he'll learn from the experience and never bunch his units up again (or run the Scrap tralls as units, though I can see why he would come to that conclusion). BTW, scrap tralls make wonderful handgrenades, as thrown by the slayer. Great batrep though, I think they're great for new players getting to know the game!
+AnimAddict21 Actually, they do. Though entry cost is OK, on a $$$/model cost it is almost the same league, as 40k. A Knight costs almost the same as a Colossal, a 10-man tac squad even cheaper than a 10-man long gunner infantry, and some units with their attachments are darn expensive. Couple it up with the fact that tournaments usually require lists with 2 casters, thus, 2 - or 1,5 - army. You can see that an average size WM/H army is not (much) cheaper than a 40k one. There are a couple of major differences though. 1.) there is a limit on each unit, how much can you put into your army list (usually 2). Warjacks and warbeasts have no such limitation, but too many of them will disrupt your resource management, and buying them won't be as efficient, as buying units or solos. 2.) Rules are on the card, that you'll get along with the miniature. So, after downloading the core rules for free, all the stuffs are included in the box to play and enjoy the game. 3.) Thanks to the - relative - internal and external balance, there is a counter for every tricks and units. I cannot really tell you any unit, or warcaster, who has been exiled back to the shelf because the rules changed, or a new unit appeared on the scene. 4.) Rule are thight and accurate. If somethhing goes way overpowered, or downright weak, it will be errata'd / FAQ'd soon.
Dont listen to Peter, a competitive 40k 2000pt army will run you around 2-2.5 k, where as a competitive warmachine army will cost about 300 max, if you take a 2nd army to a tournament (they allow 2 armies) you are looking at 600 for 2 competitive armies. So no it is nowhere close to the cost of Games Workshop.

Also, when determining scatter on an AOE, it can only scatter a maximum of half the distance from it's point of origin to where it lands.

Oh, you probably already know this, but S&P is also one of the only ways to buff Doom Reavers as well, since it doesn't target them directly.

I usually explain stealth as not being able to target the model from more than 5" away. Then the guys at my FLGS correct me by saying "you can still target them, the attack just automatically misses" However, AOEs and Spray templates automatically hit whatever's under them, regardless of stealth or concealment (trenches are a different story though). WarGamerGirl's strategy was sound.
Also, what plastic card holders are you using?
Signs and portents spell from Vlad gives extra die on both attack and damage rolls for all friendly models in his ctrl area for a round. The lowest die is discarded.

on army composition: Since the Manhunter did not do much for you in this match (and has not in the others that I have seen) perhaps it would be worth swapping it out for the Mechanik UA, so that they can repair your Man-O-Wars, making them tremendously survivable. Otherwise you are taking a 3 point unit to support only one jack in this list.

the MoW are indeed slow, but what they did in that game was draw attention away from the real killers - the winter guard. having a somewhat pricy unit with a powerful presence is a sound tactic in distracting the opponent. in one of my khador lists i field doom reavers to screen the advance of kayazy. giving your opponent a hard time to prioritize targets means that they need to spend resources. :D

very good batrep. I was surprised that the cryx player was not more aggressive. And in my experience the shock troopers are much more of a brick unit, especially with Iron flesh on them. their guns are nice, but not what I would consider great by any stretch, especially since no khador caster has snipe.

Love the battle reports; well produced and great commentary.
I'm sure video editing takes a very long time. But getting more content out at least once per week will increase viewership and subscriber count a lot.
So i recommend filming and editing 2-3 months worth of videos, then post 1 per week. This gives you ample time to film and edit and creates the illusion that you're posting a lot of new content when it's really filmed 1 or 2 months ago.

Ice report, but I wanted to point out that the 3 Scrap Thralls are not, in fact, a unit, but still all solos. They're just bought in sets of 3. This could have made a big difference since they wouldn't need to be so bunched up. And yes, that Skarlock should be on a small base.
Last comment, I promise. The Devastator is a pretty good 'jack to have 'jack marshaled under some casters. As pVlad's feat only affects 'jacks in his battle group it would not work on a 'jack being 'jack marshaled by something else. Then again, signs and portents is practically a feet of it's own, and that extra focus you don't have to waste on the Devastator can be used elsewhere. It just comes down to if you need that extra focus or not and if it's worth losing the use of pVlad's feat.
Taking the Devastator with a Jack Marshal would remove him from Vlad's battlegroup, and therefor the benefits of the feat. You could take a Koldun Lord, though. Even though he is not used as a Jack Marshal, he can provide the one focus for the Devvy via Powerbooster.
And the Shocktrooper's main benefit lies in being Defensive. At Arm 21 in Shieldwall and 8 boxes - they at least take some concentrated effort to remove. And they provide a good screen to most Khadoran casters.

Agree that Vlad plus Winter Guard plus Joe is awsome! Blood of Kings is also and amazing spell. With a war dog and BoKs, Vlad becomes defense 20 and is nearly impossible to kill :)
Not sure if it have been brought up but the officer would have gotten a tough roll since spray attacks are simultaneous.
Jack Marshalls ARE great. Take the Man O War Kovnik and Berserkers though. Activate the Kovnik, use Drive and then let the Jacks charge in for free with boosted melee attack & damage rolls. You can use a Koldun Lord if you just want the charge for the Devastator and have another spell caster. Strakhov is fun too, I'm about to get Torch for him.
I use a Cannon HV40. It uses tape so it's a little more effort to get into the computer than a straight to drive camera, but I already owned it and it's treated me well.

As a fellow Khador player let me tell you that what she is doing is completely legal The spell she is using to allow this is Signs and Portents. All attack rolls and damage rolls that are done inside his control range get an extra die to roll, dropping the lowest number. If you notice, she was dropping the lowest die every time she used it. Also, the black die she rolled against the 'jacks was just for hit location. After watching the video twice I can tell you that everything she did was legal.
Concerning your Manowar Shocktroopers: in my humble opinion the schocktroopers are to be considered fire-magnets. Basically you put them on the board to absorb enemy fire as they advance slow and steady towards the enemy. They actually can take the hits, as the have an insane armour for a unit as long as they are locked in shield wall formation. And your enemy WILL shoot at them, because he knows, what'll happen, when they get in CC. MAT 7, P+S 14, Reach and Combined Attack: NOT PRETTY!!!
Ehem! Skarlock Thralls are on small bases. See pages: 199 of Prime Mk.II or p. 116 of your Cryx Forces book. If you received a medium base in error, the Privateer Press Parts Portal will most likely send you the appropriate sized base.

The banes should have ran to set up charges for the following turn as they wouldn't have had to worry about either grape shot or rain of death the following turn since denny's feat shuts down special attacks, of which grape shot and rain of death are both forms of.

I'd like to point out for the Cryx player, Scrap Thralls are not a unit. They have no leader, and are classified as solos. You do not need to deploy them together. I've found that having a wide screen of individual thralls is a hand deterrent. Food for thought.

Cryx player gave up way too early :(. He had quite a few options for a nasty counterattack but I guess seeing half your army vaporized in one round can be rough. Well played and look forward to seeing a rematch!

Shock Troopers are for Scenario play. Drop them on an objective and watch them stay there the whole game.
Also, when making spray attacks, all of them are simultaneous, so that last shot on the Bane Thrall Officer still would have gotten a Tough roll.

Great idea Miniwargaming does that but it does cause issues with rule changes. Hell they are still posting videos for 5th edition rules for 40k and here we are in 6th edition rules now. But I am glad you didnt say film naked LOL... although with her looks it would increase viewers LOL

I think you missed a rule in there regarding stealth and spray/blast weapons. You can't actually target them with ANY ranged attack. Yes, a spray attack can hurt them - but you can't AIM at them. This means that with spray attacks you have to target something (even if you know they are out of range) on the OTHER side of them, something without stealth, naturally.

The Cryx player needs to learn that he's playing one of the factions that can still win with 1 model on the board. Should not have given up that early.
that was one of the best battle reports ive seen, that bieng said that was one of the worst cryx list deployment and spacing ive seen, skarlock unused banes clustered an then forfiting, should of played to the last box.

BatRep style is very informative and orderly. I like how you present it. However, I found myself saying many times, "What are you doing??" during the Cryx player's turn. Thats ok, he (?) just needs more games under his belt. Hint for the Cryx player ...dont bunch up your units brother.
I feel bad for the Cryx player, he must be really new, and I know how disheartening it can be to lost that many models in one round! I'm sure he'll learn from the experience and never bunch his units up again (or run the Scrap tralls as units, though I can see why he would come to that conclusion). BTW, scrap tralls make wonderful handgrenades, as thrown by the slayer.
Great batrep though, I think they're great for new players getting to know the game!

+AnimAddict21 Actually, they do. Though entry cost is OK, on a $$$/model cost it is almost the same league, as 40k.
A Knight costs almost the same as a Colossal, a 10-man tac squad even cheaper than a 10-man long gunner infantry, and some units with their attachments are darn expensive. Couple it up with the fact that tournaments usually require lists with 2 casters, thus, 2 - or 1,5 - army. You can see that an average size WM/H army is not (much) cheaper than a 40k one.
There are a couple of major differences though.
1.) there is a limit on each unit, how much can you put into your army list (usually 2). Warjacks and warbeasts have no such limitation, but too many of them will disrupt your resource management, and buying them won't be as efficient, as buying units or solos.
2.) Rules are on the card, that you'll get along with the miniature. So, after downloading the core rules for free, all the stuffs are included in the box to play and enjoy the game.
3.) Thanks to the - relative - internal and external balance, there is a counter for every tricks and units. I cannot really tell you any unit, or warcaster, who has been exiled back to the shelf because the rules changed, or a new unit appeared on the scene.
4.) Rule are thight and accurate. If somethhing goes way overpowered, or downright weak, it will be errata'd / FAQ'd soon.

Dont listen to Peter, a competitive 40k 2000pt army will run you around 2-2.5 k, where as a competitive warmachine army will cost about 300 max, if you take a 2nd army to a tournament (they allow 2 armies) you are looking at 600 for 2 competitive armies. So no it is nowhere close to the cost of Games Workshop.
