    Woodworking is my job. I've been woodworking for 15 years. It's not very often I see new ways to use tools. Just learned like 2 new ways right now lol. Great stuff. Using the depth stop on miter saw for a quick handle with a polish plane. Genius. I never thought about the fact that i can quickly plane down lumber thats gonna be under 4 inches in its final form on the table saw. Quickly turn it and keep cutting.... In theory as long as all your pieces are under 4 inches... You could plane a wide board down piece by piece. Genius.
    I know its super tough to get those glue lines invisible with a board like this. You got the seams about as good as I would have done it. Great job man.

    • @MaydaysCustomWoodworks
      @MaydaysCustomWoodworks 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more thing.... Unless you have a helical head planer and an accurate drum sander/wide belt sander the hand held belt sander is the way to go. I use a helical head planer and my Rotex usually for flattening end grain just because my belts for my handheld usually burn up and theyre much more expensive than the rotex pads even tho the rotex is slower. But you always see people trying to sand rough end grain with a random orbital sander. (I used to do that back in the day) total nightmare. Takes hours lol. Again, great job man. I can see you know your tools well.

    • @LittleHayCreek
      @LittleHayCreek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank for the great compliments my friend, when I made this board I didn’t have a planer lol, but now that I do you’re totally right, I’d need a helical cutter head. Say it loader so my wife hears haha!!
      This was my first board, but I did have a great time making it. I have a new video about to go out in the next couple days, way over complicated end grain. Wish I could do this for a living, but for now it’s a great hobby. Have an awesome day !!!

    Why did you choose to use linseed on the sides rather than using mineral oil on the whole thing? Nice joint work.

    • @LittleHayCreek
      @LittleHayCreek  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used linseed and polyurethane on the base because the end grain was really thin. If the mineral oil didn’t get properly applied periodically it would really crack and break apart, plus it should have no contact with food, the cutting board is only mineral oil, no poly.

  • @terrytuite8947

    Love the board and the background music. I have always heard that Oak is not good to use on end grain cutting boards due to the open cell structure.

    • @LittleHayCreek
      @LittleHayCreek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve heard that as well, then again I’ve been using a cutting board made from 2x4’s the last 4 years with no issues. Just wash it well between veggies and meat. Thanks for the comment 👍

      Ahh, mine the fill tube wouldn’t seat all the way, causing the stock not to fit, fixed that and 3-d printed a barrel band. The barrel itself wouldn’t seat properly, added a second hold down in the threaded hole it came with to stabilize it, but still not happening, all kinds of pellets too. Not discouraged, just waiting on the accuracy of the T-1 you had talked about.

    the result looks amazing! Everywhere I've read they say not to use Oak because of the open pores on the end grain. Have you had any issues with food absorption in the last 3 years you've had it?

    • @LittleHayCreek
      @LittleHayCreek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I made this for someone else, I use a 2x4 cutting board lol. And that’s way more porous than oak. As long as you clean it well, between salads and chicken. That was the first cutting board I’ve made. I hope this helps. No expert here 👍

    Is it me, or did he have one of the pieces turned the wrong way, on the far side. I’m in the middle of making the same pattern board, but I used the chopsaw method, lots of belt sanding involved. I’m just about ready for the main glue up when I have time this week. This board turned out nice what with the stand and all, but that wrong facing piece would drive me nuts.

    • @LittleHayCreek
      @LittleHayCreek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does have a piece facing the wrong way, we can call it character... if this was my personal board it would drive me crazy too. Thanks for watching, and hope yours turns out well.

      Sorry friend, I just reread my comment and it sounds rude as hell to me. That was not my intent. I thoroughly enjoyed your video and I definitely like the way you used long strips from the table saw, seems way way easier and better than the dozens of small pieces i cut on my chopsaw. And, like everyone else has said, thanks for the jams!

    Curious why you made and used a different fence and throat plate?

    • @LittleHayCreek
      @LittleHayCreek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, I made different throat plates for zero clearance and my dado setup. The fence was made to attach stuff to it, also a sacrificial surface I can cut into if needed. With the fence a little higher I can stabilize taller pieces. I use both of the originals as well. Have a great day !!👍

    Looks sweet ,didn't think oak was ever a good choice for a cutting board though ,way to pours of a material

    • @LittleHayCreek
      @LittleHayCreek  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim Dyck. I’ve been using an end grain board made from 2x4’s for the last 5 years I believe it’s pine, with no issues. Oak isn’t recommended as much as maple for sure. As long as you finish it well, and clean it properly I believe you will be ok.
