According to what Microplane is showing in their product displays, it isn't intended for a single clove of garlic, like you try in your demonstration.
You are supposed to load several cloves at the same time into the bin and grate the total quantity that you will need for your recipe. (I don't know if that will make a difference in it's performance. But it seems like it might help eliminate your primary complaint) If you do that, it seems like you would eliminate much of your waste.
If I am not mistaken, this is a first version of a good concept from Microplane. It isn't yet a precision instrument (even for their own product.). It's very helpful that you provided the close-up of the assembled grater, bin and push.
It seems like the next version should adjust the mold for the plastic slightly to add a lip around the exit of the bin that is closer to the face of the grater at the exit side (perhaps a 1/16" off the face of the grater itself), facing the grater edge and that also matches the curvature of the grater face.
The push end facing the grater face should also be adjusted to match the curvature of grater face and extend the push end so that it aligns with the end of the lip that will be added in the newly revised bin described above
The company's employees and engineers seems like they are conscientious and trying to figure out a difficult safety problem (as evidenced, for example, by America's Test Home Kitchen review on TH-cam of graters, in general.) in order to make their graters the very best product. This first attempt was a great try.

9 years have passed and this review still holds true. The grater attachment does not do its job well, is difficult to clean, and cumbersome to remove. A shame they did not improve it over the years.

I wish I had read the review before purchasing. Mine is a really difficult to put on. When I finally succeded after quite some struggle it did not slide effortles at all. And now I can't get it off, which made me search on TH-cam... I might need to break it, if possible.

Just because something doesn't work the way you want it to doesn't mean it has a design flaw. The gap between the microplane and the attachment has to be that size. It is made to fit multiple microplanes with different size and height cutters plus still have clearance to move. You used one of the smallest ones thus a big gap. Put a different one with bigger and higher cutters you get less gap. Otherwise they would have to make a separate attachment for each size and what a nightmare that would be. Where is the coarse attachment for the coarse microplane? No! That's the ribbon attachment. Get the idea.
Is it really so hard to clean? Does rinsing off two pieces of plastic cut into your day that much? If so you may need to loosen your schedule a little.
My elderly Mother has more than once cut her fingers and almost opened her hand with one of these without an attachment. We got her the attachment as a safety device and a small amount of garlic that may not get shredded and ends up in the trash is a small price to pay.
Tell me this, can you grate an entire piece of anything without this attachment? The answer is no, unless you want to shred part of your fingers off and that's not good eats. There will always be a small leftover portion and yes, it may be much smaller but depending on what it is your still either throwing it away or using it.

Exactly. It's purpose is to protect your delicate fingers. If you're a pro and doesn't mind grinding your fingers then so what? Not for you.

You said it before I could. You were nicer than I would have been, though.

I just bought a set of three to replace the ones I've had for about 30 years, so I was just looking for a demo of this attachment. The new ones came with it. I probably won't need to use it, but I think it might work better on the coarse grater.

You are completely correct. It did protect the fingers, but it is wasteful and difficult to use. In addition, I had a really hard getting off the attachment off the Microplate itself. It took a hammer. I tossed it.

I have a smaller, similar unit (bought in local grocery store, not made by Microplane) and I had the same experience and same complaints. It shouldn't be that hard to design one that grates the entire piece of food.

You're welcome :-) The grater themselves are excellent. This attachment sucks though.

Yeah the attachment looks like it would be 2 more things to clean.

It actually is a bitch to clean, but I wouldn't mind so much if it worked well.
