To learn more about Duffy Neubauer, his collection and woodworking recreation of Civil War artillery, or to schedule a visit check out:
    www.starkvillecivilwararsenal...
Duffy Neubauer is the creator of the Starkville Civil War Arsenal. It's the only facility in the country where visitors can view all of the Civil War field artillery carriages and associated support vehicles. The Arsenal features several canons, a rolling forge, a Wheeling ambulance, and a few other carriages. The newest addition is a sweet gum mortar. The sweet gum mortar is a portable mortar made from the trunk of a sweet gum tree.

When I started watching this I thought I wouldn't watch it through. But Duffy is so engaging it was hard to stop watching. An enthusiast and a great film maker is a good combination. Thanks Jay and Duffy.

Quick question. I completely understand the dark lantern and not being seen, nor open flame near the magazine. However, when this hell began raining down on the enemy, aren’t the mortar positions given away? Or I guess exploding shells would keep the enemy hunkered down and not be able to retaliate? Excellent video. Thank you!

Id say a lantern would be a constant light source, so the defenders could better keep track of the location. A mortar firing just causes a short flash of light which is a lot harder to keep track of in the darkness as you also lack reference points, especially when you are then more concerned with not getting killed by the shell.

I wonder if the combatants of the Civil War ever experimented with flame throwers.

I clicked the bell long ago, but was never notified about part 1, so I'm glad I saw this. It was very interesting, and I enjoyed Duffy's description of events and firing, etc. I live in south central MN and every year around 4th of July, they fire the civil war cannons...it's definitely impressive, and pretty awesome to watch. And that night fire sequence you showed was pretty awesome too! I see you posted the link for part 1 below, so I'll check that out next. Thanks for posting this Jay, I've always been very interested in history.

Why was the rate of fire so low? A normal cannon could fire far faster than that, also how long would such a weapon last/ how many rounds could it fire before it wore out?

The shells do not appear to have the weight of iron. What were they made of?

Did the South also use these Sweetgum mortars, or was it a Union weapon only?

How did you get that clip of the shell being fired out of the mortar? Did you tape a GoPro to the shell? That was an excellent clip.
    Thanks for the video.

he posted some pictures on his instagram. Basically he made a shell with a pocket cut out in the tip to fit a gopro. Then he screwed some plexiglass over the top to hold it all together.
