How to PAIR / SYNC your Joy-Cons & Pro Controllers to your Nintendo Switch

Hi, this video shows you how to pair your Joy-Con and Pro Controllers to your Nintendo Switch. It also shows you how to change the order of them so player 4 can become player 1 etc.

You don't need to have four players as a maximum. If you take a Joycon off the Switch and press a button, then it will automatically connect if it's paired. That means you can have up to eight, as the "Controllers" menu can only hold eight.

Wait so how does the system know that you're trying to use the joycon grip? In a game like arms, it'll still try make you use motion controls on the grip which won't work.

Captin Marvelous The Switch doesn’t know, the grip is just that, a grip. It doesn’t have any tech inside as it reflects the lights from the joy-cons. All it does is holds the joy-cons, and the Switch recognizes it as 2 separate joy-cons.

My daughter recently bought the Switch and wanted me to help set it up to play on the tv. Ah shit no instruction booklet. This is kinda random, but when you put your joycons on your Nintendo Switch console, (without it inside dock) and you hear the Switch sound effect, like the click. You should notice when you put a certain color joycon in the switch, it shows that same color.
Example: you have a red joycon remote and hook it up, you hear it make the sound and you see the red color when you put it in. Well.... for me, it still made the sound effect, but instead of the color being red, it was just gray.
Idk why this happens, but I would like to know. And when I press controllers on the main screen, it shows the correct colored joy cons that I have attached to the Switch.
So I am not sure if my switch is just old or if something happened.

Are you able to pair two joycons as if they are in the grip but arent, for example if i was to buy an extra set of joycons would i have to buy another grip or could i use them side by side without the grip so i could have 2 people each using 2 joycons? 1 with a controller and one without?

So in order to use/assign a pro styled controller as the primary game controller you have to remove the joycons from the main unit?
That's kind of a bummer
I think it's cool the way switch components go together and come apart but it would be a lot cooler if it would let you assign which controllers you want to use if you have them (which I do) instead of making you have to keep taking it apart all of the time!

You don’t have to do that. Once they’re paired to the switch, you can choose whatever order you want whenever you want. I have my pro controller as my primary one.

I don't know why but the L and R button pairing almost never works for any Controller but works more for The Joycons than Pro.

Cool. Thanks. Just needed to know how to pair my red and blue joy-cons as I got the animal crossing one instead of the red and blue like I wanted. So, I bought them instead. Now, when and if I want I can switch them out. Might even leave the original ones paired as well. No one but me plays it. Well, the hubby said he might.

You can easily pair the Switch Pro Controller by plugging it in with a USB Type C Cable. I did that when I got my Pro Controller. Same way you would pair a PS4 controller, so it's very easy to just pair the Pro Controller with a USB Cable.
