Great video - always a joy to see Darrow artwork! The guy with the pipe and hat on the last spread (18:18) is Jacques Tati's character Monsieur Hulot, so it's a nice easter egg to one of Darrow's favourite filmmakers.
I was only six years old when this issue of Heavy Metal came out. My father left these magazines around the house and I was blown away by the Bourban Threat story, it was forever burned in my minds eye.
Thank you for this video, insightful as usual. Getting glimpses of so many amazing artists in Heavy Metal's when I was in high school, in the 70's, was like there was a new, more inspiring world out there, waiting.
Given that he has a suitcase with stickers, indicating a vacation or voyage, he is likely referencing the earlier "Monsieur Hulot's Holiday" from 1953. Also, in the context of the story a vacation would make more sense than the plot or elements of "Mon Oncle".
My copy of The Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel To Be Kin arrived today, from Barnes & Nobel! Also, years ago, you did a Heavy Metal video and showed some of that comic strip The Bus, also in this video, it looked interesting, I bought a copy of the first The Bus collection, it is an entertaining oddity that I am pleased to own, and worth a 'Kayfabe review. Likewise, years ago you talked about Bill Mauldin and his World War 2 Willie and Joe comics, that lead me to buy Fantagraphics giant Willie and Joe collection, another one worth a 'Kayfabe review.
Good to see this story. Just purchased Cruel to be Kin (didn't realize it had been released - thanks) and also John Findley's collected Tex Arcana! satisfying to finally read the entire story (always wanted the '87 Catalan Communications album, but suspected it wasn't the entire tale....or is it?

I have the bande dessinée hardback version of this. French language so was good to pause this video and read the story in English for the first time! My copy has totally different colours, two extra pages of fighting, speech bubbles in different places and other little changes. That first page is really cropped. It’s just one panel in the French version.
Amazing video guys! Had me down a Superfriends rabbit hole. Please have Tom in to discuss what he he feels are Darrow designs! Darrow was at HB when some of the heavyweights were. ❤
There’s a hardcover French edition with different cuts and color scheme. The book has more stories too so you can see his evolution as an artist through this one book. It’s great.
Zatoichi,the blind swordsman is who geof has designed this character and shaolin cowboy.if you like this you may really enjoy one or more of the classic Japanese movie and tv series starring Shintaro Katsu.
I believe this issue also has An Author In Search Of Six Characters by Milo Manara, which is for sure video worthy if you haven’t checked it out before!
Have a Danish version called Total Metal from 1985 with the same Darrow story.. only it's not colored. I just wanted more with Bourbon Thret back then.. but here in Denmark in the 80ies? No chance 😂 18:20 That's Jacques Tati .. or his character monsieur hulot
I discovered Darrow trough the Spanish Heavy Metal translated version, the collected version of many things went published by Norma in the 80-90. Not Shaolin Cowboy, but Hard Boiled, the format was big and copied all the detail in destroyed things ...

This was my intro to Darrow as well. I didn’t encounter him again until Hardboiled came out. I love the stuff y’all cover.
