It really doesn't get better than Pink Floyd. Their music is deep and cerebral, as well as highly emotional. It's also highly layered and complex, and after decades of listening to it I still hear new things, it's like an aural Mandelbrot set. Pink Floyd has also influenced every genre of music that's come after them. For recommendations, to start with check out the songs Time, Hey You, Comfortably Numb, Money, Keep Talking, and The Great Gig in the Sky (I'd recommend the studio versions to begin with). With the songs On the Turning Away and Dogs of War, I'd go straight to the live versions from their Delicate Sound of Thunder concert.
