  • This video shows the Phalinx system by Wright Medical before the surgery performed on a patient. Most foot surgeons or other foot specialists will use the old way of pinning the toe and leaving the end exiting the toe after surgery to be removed later. With the expansion of devices from different surgical equipment companies over the years, more different systems and materials are available than ever before.
For example, the second toe is difficult to keep straight after a hammer toe repair surgery because the big toe (or Hallux) can press against it when wearing tight shoes. Removing the pin after 3 weeks like the old procedures will allow the toe to drift and angle downwards again or towards the third toe. With the newer intramedullary devices (pins that are internal and stay in the bone marrow), the toe remains straight after surgery. That being said, some of the other more brittle devices made of bone, plastic or pins that 'dissolve' later can also fail so I personally prefer a metallic device in the second toe to prevent this.
Another good thing about this product is the straight and angled versions are threaded so after the pressed fit is finished, the device will not move or shift - meaning the toe stays straight and exactly the way the surgeon leaves it well after the patient is healed.
