    A common problem with Poulan 3314 models is not starting when hot. To correct this issue, use 1/4" drill bit, drill 8 holes in upper portion of air filter cover and deburr the holes. This will allow sufficient air to enter the top carburetor port to start a hot engine.
    You refer to use of 91/93 octane fuel, which helps a little, but what helps the most is use of fresh fuel, or use of fuel stabilizer. Un-stabilized fuel should not be used beyond a maximum 30 days, but in fact it depends upon the levels of ethanol and water in the fuel which determines when fuel is no longer usable. Testers are available for both characteristics. Ethanol-free fuel will help reduce fuel line decay and failure, and does not allow water contamination of fuel through absorption from free air, but otherwise doesn't directly affect engine operation.
    A couple of things I suggest to my customers, in use of any consumer-level chain saw, is to add clean, fresh or stabilized fuel with the appropriate mixture of 2 cycle oil (generally 40-1), unless you're using a 4-stroke model, in which case you simply add clean, fresh or stabilized fuel. And clean the air filter before each use. The air filter can be completely clogged in 30 minutes or less of operation, and it take just a few minutes to do the cleaning. At the end of use, completely drain the fuel from the machine. You'd be surprised how many issues this prevents.

    I recently bought a cheap saw just to process the wood from one 80' oak tree I had taken down. I told the tree guy to leave the wood and he gave me a nasty look. Why? Because in my area this time of year (Nov) hardwood is going for close to $300/cord. I had easily 2 cords of wood from that tree that cost me $800 to have cut down. I got most of my $$ back just in the wood. Gave it all to my sister since I don't have a fireplace. The tree guys sell that wood so he acted like I was stealing from HIM, even though it was my wood. I even told him to quote me WITH leaving the wood so he couldn't claim I misled him. Anyway, I picked up a $150 20" saw off Amazon and it easily handled the job. No I wouldn't use it professionally but as a homeowner I didn't need to drop $400+ for a saw I would use maybe once a year or two. I had owned several chainsaws in the past, along with MANY power tools and I have no issue saving $$ on a tool so long as it serves its' purpose. Like I said I wouldn't try and make a living off using cheaper tools but there's no need to pay for and shelf a top end tool that will sit most of the time. Not hating on Stihl or Husq, you just don't need to always buy them for light use.

    I would highly recommend that you stop using gas station gas. It is not just the ethanol in station gas that causes carb problems on two strokes and four strokes. I live in NJ and after Hurricane Irene my parents lost a few trees and some even on top of their house. I came by to help and my brother had a cheap saw. It vibrated way too much. I went out and bought a Stilh. I think that with something as dangerous as a chainsaw you should not go cheap.

After that he read up on chainsaws and got a poulan Pro since they have better engines in them. My brothers and my dad have all used that saw and it still runs today. All the green poulan is good for is parts.

      William Quinn The main problem with chainsaws is the carb. and the fuel lines. Amazon has a 12" hemostat pliers to replace the fuel lines. Use pliers to remove the fuel lines. Take a tape measure and measure the I.D. and O.D of the fitting to determine fuel line size. It'll be about 1/16" x 1/8". Use the hemostat pliers to pull the fuel line into the tank to then install the filter. Cut the lines at a slant to ease installation. Don't enlarge the hole, it'll leak. Look at the carb. make- Zama or Walbri and the number to get the right kit. The diaphragm hardens and causes less fuel to be pumped to the engine. Get the spline mixture tool. Set lo mixture for highest RPM'S at idle and hi mixture for highest RPM'S at full throttle. Set the idle just until the chain just stops. Get the piston stop tool and the clutch tool from Amazon to replace the clutch. The clutch is left-hand thread meaning it loosens to the right. Replace the oil pump often. If there's no oil on the chain, replace the pump. Amazon has it. Get 2! They go bad often. Some carbs. from Amazon come from China. They usually don't work. To replace the engine brake, follow the instructions. To replace the chain can be frustrating! There is a trick to getting the hole to line up in the cover. You have to screw the screw until it drops in the hole. Make sure the chain is in the right direction. A chain saw can last YEARS with maintenance! I have 2 Wildthings. People call them throw-away but they just don't know how to fix them.

    You definitely do not need high-octane fuel in a production chainsaw. Many need only 87-octane, some 89-octane. Squish-bands all around the chamber help to prevent detonation. If you run a saw regularly, or store it dry if for more than a few weeks, E-10 is no problem. When you start a saw with fast-idle, do not leave it run with brake on, unless you want to melt some plastic. "Poulan Pro" saws have good anti-vibration. "Poulan" (green) do not.

    • @billyq12001

      Nice post. Thanks. I do not use 87 because of the deposits in the carburetor and it dries out the primer bubble.

    • @jacquesblaque7728
      @jacquesblaque7728 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only reason I use 89-octane- my Dolmar 6100 shows 215 psi on the gauge, VERY high comp, and peaking at 10K rpm, onset of destruction could be quick. Deposits would likely be from bad filter or cracked fuel line, and plain-old dirty fuel. No cracked bubbles encountered here, but one used for ~20 years. Lots of fear-mongering about ethanol, but I MUCH prefer mine diluted for drinking. (And corn in bread, thanks.) Yes, I've a few Poulans, & PPros, besides pro Husqy, Dolmar, etc. All good.

      jacques your correct abbout the chain brake... but there is no reason to not run 93.or 91... whatever you can get. i understand it may not require high octance but there are many good things that it does. i just think its raggy to run 87. maybe in a buddies machine lol but all my personally owned things will drink high octane, be it my turbo mazda or 1969 sears chainsaw..

    • @jacquesblaque7728
      @jacquesblaque7728 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In fact, there is good reason to not use fuel with higher octane than rqd. Put simply, higher octane results in slower flame-front propagation. That reduces efficiency and power output. Saw this demonstrated with a Formula Ford on a dyno. Best power resulted with "regular". Excess octane benefits big oil. Simple. M'self, I put the $ to much better use. Lotta nonsense about 40:1 too. Use full-syn.

      William Quinn I have a McCullough cs 360 ,the manual says 40-01 with some oils and 50-01 with others ,I use 25-01 and it runs perfectly, with not much smoke ,these tech heads run them too lean ,two strokes must have oil too keep them cool and for a long life.

    Needs tuning right out of the box and has to drive 30 min. to have someone put a screwdriver on it for 30 sec. Good luck finding parts for that green POS when you need them, cause you will. Pay the extra and get a good quality brand name like Husqvarna or STIHL from a dealer who sells and services them, do not buy from mass merchants or on-line retailers. Support local.

      @@JohnDoe-le8fy mine came the same way, carb was WAY out of whack out of the box, it wouldn't even idle if you let off the throttle amongst other issues the thing had but it serves the purpose I acquired it for, I drive through the mountains everyday and seems like anytime the wind picks up a tree decides to rest along the road I was afraid my Husqvarna's would be stolen from my vehicle so I want a cheap easily replaceable saw to keep with me, I hated this p.o.s at first but I got it doing well now and as I said it has a purpose.

    China saws have brittle cast iron piston rings, cheap carbs.....so they either die of compression loss(no start).....or they basically Gum up SO bad, and those crappy Cube carbs are Not worth messing with, total disposable junk.......So yeah, it's fine if you need to drop a couple Small trees, a One time deal......but anything other than that, NO WAY I would depend on it!

    Use only ethanol free 91octane along with quality oil in that saw.

    • @billyq12001
      @billyq12001  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use boat gas now. This contains nothing that will damage the carb.

    • @vanalstyne9834
      @vanalstyne9834 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So were on the same page, when you say boat gas you mean a two stroke mix. Most outboards take 50:1. My saw runs on 40:1. The whole reason I commented was when I heard "premium" gas, I thought you still used gas with ethanol. That's all.

    • @billyq12001
      @billyq12001  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Van Alstyne I use Premium gas in the video because boat gas is not used everywhere. I also use boat gas in my home generator.

    • @vanalstyne9834
      @vanalstyne9834 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, something is being lost in translation. What you call premium gas may or may not contain ethanol. You can get 93 octane, but it still has up to 10% ethanol. Gas stations with "E-free" gas will have a dedicated pump just for it. If your using the same fuel to fill both the chainsaw and generator, something is wrong.

    You're incorrect. Use Non-Ethanol fuel. That's why your carb messed up on the husky. Also the length of time you let your gas sit effects the internals of your 2 stroke engines. Guarantee the Stihl I use professionally everyday will outlive that Poulan. Also if you learn how to tune your carbs you can save yourself a lot of hassle. You're just wrong lol

    • @billyq12001
      @billyq12001  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do know that. But, once a carb have been sitting to two plus years it has to be cleaned out. I now use Non-Ethanol fuel.

      The poulan is a POS i threw my away after one year, my arm got numb from keeping it running and pulling that thing. All you need to do is get the bottles of 40:1 mix, it cost a bit more but beats the bullshit of finding a 0 ethanol gas-station. Problems are easy to prevent also before you put it away for a good bit just run it DRY. My Remington outlaw 20inch chainsaw has proven to be more than able! In fact my neighbors Stihl crapped out on him when he needed it the most.

    Poulans are great saws for the money ...only problem with them is they are not locally tuned when you buy them. One just needs to buy the carb tuning tool (cheap) or take it to a saw shop. A lot of people like the Stihls and Husqvarnas cause they run well......and that's cause most of the time the local dealer tunes them before sale. Besides...if you don't buy for outright high displacement performance...at least buy for color.....Poulan Green is hard to beat. Do a good muffler mod on em...and you'll be pleasantly surprised....even with the safety chain.

      J Dovak lolll I guess you don’t have a stihl ..... Bc if you did you would know the 2 year warranty... is free... if you buy either a gallon of the moto mix... or a 6pack of the hp plus oil.... that’s it .... then bang... extra year on the warranty..... there is no “extra charge” per se... just this cost of the premix ... or oil... that’s it..well worth the extra year of protection.... but if you take care of your investments ..... then in theory you really shouldn’t need any warranty... but it’s always good just case something catastrophic happens...

    Jimmy Tate it probably takes you all day to cut a cord of wood with that crap saw you got I know two people who bought that junk you got neither saw made it a year and they used them very little if like them more power to you but I wouldn't waste my money on it and stihl echo and Husqvarna are by far much much better saws fast cutting and hold up really well lol

    • @jimmytate7587
      @jimmytate7587 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      not a problem dude. I assume you have had some of the cheap saws as you seem to know so much about them. As for myself, I currently own Echo, Husqvarna, Homelite and Poulan. I find little difference in performance between any of them except for power. The Rancher 455 is a powerhouse and the homelites are like mouse power, but they all serve a specific purpose. I have tried the chinese saws and can't see anything that would stop me from having one when I need another. They are used all over Asia for logging and many huge trees are downed with them. If they didn't perform as they should the local loggers wouldn't use them.
