@@mikew3467I'm here 4 months in the future (2024). TH-cam thought it was necessary to remind me and recommended it again. I forgot all about it (the video) till I seen I commented on it 5 years ago. What a bizarre time capsule 🤣
@@catalyststudios5024 it’s 2025 now, and not only are they still not using the tunnel, but the province wants the green line to be elevated above tenth avenue.
The video is very dated and the tunnel was damaged in the June 2013 flood. It was eventually used by vagrants and is now fenced off. Located a few yards from the 7 Ave under the new Calgary Public Library, the tunnel can very briefly be seen on the inbound Red Line after leaving Victoria Park-Stampede LRT station. FYI from a resident. mfj
The S.E. Line has been started, I know of 3 spots That are currently in devolpment for the S.E. Portion. I’ve been watching them for almost 2 years and several tunnels are being build for that line
Interesting to see the old ctrain stations. The old 8th Street West Station, etc. And there's definitely no sign of it going underground even 10 years later. Only one going underground any time soon is the SE/NC line. Still, nothing for the red line however.
@@uzzfra7975 That was the tunnel referenced in the video. Like Edward said it's blocked off now. There must've been better signalling for more trains to be pushed through downtown, because even now there's still no sign of the red line going under 8th Ave, which is where it would go passed City Hall. I helped do a fair bit of the CTrain Wikipedia page and when doing the research it would've cost $800 million Canadian in 2012 dollars. Thanks to Covid this project might've been pushed indefinitely. If the downtown core isn't going to be a central place for people to work in, CTrain ridership might be permanently lowered. But if it returns back to what it was, you'll see ridership between 350,000-430,000 per day on average.
@garycalgary The Calgary "Empty Tunnel" is very wide so I am guessing was was supposed to be a crossover cavern since Edmonton downtown subway has crossover sectoin that widen like that. I seen photos of Edmontons new "Empty Tunnel" under Epcore and it's just 2 twin tubes with no crossover cavern. I hope they get the funding to finnish it though.
I moved to Vancouver from Calgary, and trust me, Vancouver's is the best in the country (except the Montreal Metro, which is great). Calgary's bus coverage is great but they can't keep a schedule. The C-train's coverage is not great either, although West Van could certainly use at least a little light rail.
There was another tour video of the underground tunnel. Can anyone send a link? Much appreciate it. Also is there an entrance to that place? I heard there was a couple...
I Just Can't Wait Cause There's 5 LRT Stations Underground let ya Know City Hall, Centre Street, 3rd Street SW, 5 Street SW And 7th Street SW Stations Underground
Edmonton is building a tunnel under a new epcore tower under construction but theirs hints with without proper funding for north-west LRT it may become a "tunnel to nowhere" just like calgary in this video.
best transit system in Canada? Bahahaha what a joke. The CTrain is great. But the buses are horrible. This video was 7 years ago, noone's breathed a word of it since?
And edmonton is building a simliar "LRT tunnel to nowhere" under the new epcore tower, with the reccesion edmonton not gonna afford to finnish the new north line. So edmonton can now use our new short incomplete tunnel under the new epcore tunnel store an "Ark of the Covenant"
@gsgeek540 I did not suggest there was a tunnel goes north south please read the first line about a water table. At 4th ave the water table is 9" below the pavement as you draw this line at 7th avenue its about 3 feet down. which means when the bow is at its max height in spring run off just gotta dig down 3' at 7th avenue and you will find water. naturall occuring as this is the bow rives water table at spring run off. it starts this from late march early april till mid - late june.
Just a thought, but until this station is actually in use, why not turn this thing into a homeless shelter? It's not like they can go to the Cecil anymore!
Edmonton's is designed better...it's underground - especially downtown. Underground is more expensive, but it doesn't take up any roads, and doesn't disrupt traffic flow and create traffic jams!! I have many friends that work for transit, and the underground tunnels that are there, are too small for the current cars. They will NOT spend the Millions of dollars to enlarge the tunnels, so no matter what they say in this "2008" broadcast, it will NOT be used.
Calgary planners have procrastinated so long until mayors like Ralph Klein and today's Nehed Nenshi really got the ball rolling but everything is still 6 years behind where it should be, for example 4 car trains should be now but won't be until 2016 etc.
Yeah, I think that they should get the 4 car thing going. It could be done in route 202 if they focused on the NE side of the lines. Because... Now that all the stations in 7th ave are done, and with the west done and the recent expansions for the NE are also all long enough to have 4 car trains, the only section left on the line to be expanded at that point would be the NE. Only ones that would need it are from bridgeland to rundle. that's it pretty much. So if they did them all at the same time... the NE/WEST could have 4 car trains in no time.
Its all good till you hit 4th ave sw then 9" under the pavement you hit the bow river water table. Now I not a rocket scientist but if you need to pump millions of litres fof water every day just to build more tunnel i only see the price tag going up and up best estimation to put the tunnel under 7th ave where the city hall tunnel starts would probally cost the city 1 -2 Billion dollars who wants a tax hike last years did not go over well with the city residents of even 4,5% imagine 18% tax hike
I think Vancouver's transit system is catching up quickly to Calgary's........Our sky trains/sub ways are packed all the time and busses are full and can't always pick up people...... I think Vancouver, B.C. has the most buisiest well used system.......Transit can't keep up with the demand and funds are low...
I come from 2021 to tell you they forgot about it 💔
I'm from 3 years in the future (2024) and I'm going to reference this video to a Facebook post on why didn't calgary build underground trains!

That tunnel is now a sewer filled up with water cause of the flood.

does anyone know how to find the entrance to this tunnel? I'd be interested to see it, even if it's not accessible to the public.
They should make underground train stations like in Singapore, with full height platform screen doors.
This video is specifically talking about an underground train through Stephen Ave. I've never taken any underground trains at Stephen Ave....
So, they opted for the Art of the Covenant storage then.

I don't know this for sure but I've seen this place near Victoria park and City hall (The tunnel) Where you can see an underground place
