Anyone who travels to Asia wanting to see elephants should be aware of two things: places that have elephants “perform” for the public and/or give them rides are always abusive and exploitative; and places that have mothers with calves and allow visitors to pet and play with the calves (while the mothers are kept away, often chained up so they don’t attack to protect their calves) ate horribly exploitative and abusive. Places like this often call themselves “rescues” or “sanctuaries”, but no legitimate sanctuary makes animals perform or give people rides, or deliberately breeds animals in order to have babies to exploit.
Same principle applies to most places with wild animals. If they make the animals perform, if they let you touch the animals, or if there are lots of mothers with babies there, these are not real sanctuaries. They’re businesses that are stealing animals from the wild and/or breeding them in captivity for profit.

I have a cat that had an abcess under her neck. We didn't see or know about it until it burst leaving a huge hole in her neck. She couldn't eat. We rushed her to the vet and they stitched her back up, gave us pain meds and she made a full recovery!

were you aware that Christian missionary work is one of the biggest causes of exploitation, both animal and human? if Christians hadn't violently subjugated half the planet "in the name of God" to steal resources and abuse every living thing that didn't suit their belief system, then these beautiful animals might have been more respected by their native community rather than seen as a financial opportunity. where was your God when his people were praising his name slaughtering people and animals all over the world? obviously he let it happen. people acting in his name with his consent, because after all, if he didn't like something, he'd stop it, right. that's what you people always claim and yet it always continues unhindered, maybe your God WANTS this. ever think of that?

Thanks for showing us the rescue center of the elephants 🐘 in Thailand and the beautiful 🐘 in South Africa but I question about the contraception on the elephants, only if it protects them against being killed Humans should understand that there is enough land for animals and people to live together in this God given earth we must stop being greedy and protect the beautiful creations of God instead of complaining about them 😊

Every area has complex different issues, this area does not have any poaching activity on elephants, and there must be some sort of imbalance in the ecosystem for there to be so many elephants. Maybe there aren't any lions here due to lion shooting, so baby elephants never die and the populations skyrocketed, as an example I just made up.
The elephants they are using contraception on are in extremely high populations, if they continue breeding unchecked they will overgraze and destroy the land, ultimately killing themselves and other species in the process of starvation. This is why balance in an ecosystem is so important, and predators and prey rely on eachother for their world to be ok.
Managing this elephant population now prevents future local extinctions. It is a good thing when managed correctly, and it's better than shooting the elephants, as this way they can still live their life out, without adding to the local population.
The BETTER option, if possible, would be to work out WHY there are so many elephants, and treat the root cause. If the problem were the example I used earlier, re-introducing lions would be the solution, as they would naturally balance out elephant populations.
The elephant overpopulation is just a symptom of something else that has gone wrong in the ecosystem.

One of the most important people in organisations devoted to helping wildlife globally who are victims of the global scourge....illegal/unlawful wildlife crime where wildlife victims have had decades/years and more often a lifetime of pain, suffering and misery are veterinarians. These animals have advanced medical conditions that are concurrent with long term starvation, beatings with abject cruelty they have been subjected to, stress, held hostage by chains, ropes and terrible housing that is a driver of stress and health breakdown. These organisations are dependent on volunteer programs.....their money is used entirely/exclusively to give the rescued wildlife a life of freedom from pain and suffering. Once rescued the animal will be able to live in peace, safety forever until its end life. Cecile...Australian volunteer with ARCAS....centre of rescue/rehab/wildlife return in Central America.....due to illegal trafficking and illegal pet trade in Guatemala. Thank you Dr Chris. Your help is invaluable to the animal's safety, health and welfare.

I think this elephant is in a zoo in Thailand but the video can easily be found on youtube. Unfortunately, youtube refuses to take this video down, despite it having been reported multiple times.

I remember the poor elephants in Nepal when I visited nearly thirty years ago. Near Chitwan Park, they were chained up in the sun when not accommodating tourists on her back. I remember them pulling at their chains and getting on one knee, begging us to release them. It was heartbreaking.

I feel like westerns don't really understand how important elephants are to south Asian culture, elephant mahouts are the caretakers of captive elephants and have passed down theirs knowledge of how to care for elephants generational, although some of their teachings are cruel to elephants like the use bull hooks and shackles, not all elephant mahouts are abusive so they shouldn't be generalized with abusers.
People who have been doing the same thing for a thousand plus years aren't going to change right away, but if only young people were educated on how to treat elephants properly it would end the cycle of abuse, and shamming people is not the way to do it.

those elephants on the roads are actually acting like trainrobbers , a few stop trucks that drive by while the others tear intoo the back of it trying to get to the produce
as for the elephant with the absesses , you might need to open them up and dig through them and get all the remains of the encapsulation out before the absess stops regrowing (same as absesses on humans ) its more invasive and she probably needs to be put under for the procedure but should heal up enough to be left alone in terms of trying to drain the wounds again and again

Typically African Elephants get to 60-70 years in the wild, but significantly less in captivity, some sources saying 30-40 years. Although some of this result could be from infant mortality and older data sets (like 1900s) with horrible conditions.

then why hasn't he already, if he has the power to do so? smh you people always claim your god will fix something, why didn't he just make it correctly to start with? why allow room for evil if he never wanted it? because it was part of his plan. God NEEDS evil to exist, or he becomes obsolete and useless by comparison, because what is there for him to "save" you from? hmm? think about it. he MADE Satan, sin, evil, all of it exists because God wills it. THAT is evil.
