    My 1967 camper has stock rims but 15. Maybe the rims where replaced from previous owner. What size tire be good for 15’s? I imagine 205 / 75 / 15 it be too big

  • @calliope1
    @calliope1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think the 65-67 had a 4.375r&p with the big nut. It was the small nut busses that had the 4.125, with exception of “little big nut” and 64 with the 4.125 and big nuts. I’m having issues pushing 60 in my 64(4.125 and 1.26 boxes)with a 1500 running 205/70r14 tires. I wonder if you think a 1500 could push a 3.44 with a .89 4th? I like the idea of having a higher speed in the lower gears. I think vw realized that 4.125 R&P with the big nut boxes was a little too tall stock. It is a long slow pull with the 1.5L from 43-60mph......

    Hey Mike what about for a 71 baywindow. I'm running a 175/65/14 rear tire, I did lower the bus with 4 inch narrow front beam, with 2.5 inch drop spindles, and the rear im running 3.5 inch horse shoes. What size can I go with to lower my rpms on the highway?

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      honestly that is the bare minimum IMO. You would really like the 3.44s Some day make the upgrade. Even at 65 you can really have a conversation with someone else in the car. not too loud but still plenty of air through the engine. Runs super cool. gets it in that air RPM sweet spot. you could have Benco do a bench on the Box only put the boxes on yourself and have some passing speed. I was passing a boat and trailer on my way to Havasu for BBB and had to hit 85 for a second. Did it no problem.

    went to your trans guy's web site and he's not listing any trans with 3.44 r&p , that r&p is hard to find, i'm looking at a web site listing it at $400 with very limited quantity, i'm tempted to go that route rather than purchase a .82 4th.

    About using a jack to push the axles down on a lowered Bus. It can depend on a lot of things. How low the Bus is, wheel size and offset, tire size, and the year of the Bus. On 63’s with the flat wheel arches have a lot less clearance then a 63 and up. I’ve had a few mildly lowered 64 and up Buses with aftermarket wheels and 205 width tires, and didn’t need to push the axle Dow to change tires.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow I have not heard that. Most of the guys I know need to jack the arm down to get the tire off. or have super small tires that defeats the gear ratio problem.

    So the tire he has on is basically 26 in tall so if you want a low profile you would need to go to a 17 in with 215/55/17 which is 26-26.3 " tall on the rear. That's what I get if you want after market wheels.

    Hey mike
    Im running a big nut trans with gear boxes. Its a 3.88 with .77 4th. So it comes out to 3.76. Paired with a 1915cc. I recently went to a show and some dude was saying im gonna blow up my motor. The motors not the healthiest but it still feels strong. Im also running 205/85 15 in the rear. What do you think?

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont think I have ever heard of a 77 4th. I have heard of a .79 but I am not totally sure they make that for a bug or bus trans. Those were in Rabbits. but I am not sure if they can be used in a rear wheel drive car.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no that would not be a problem with too low fan speed IMO lower gears than bug 3.88 even with those numbers. final drive 3.45 but your tires are taller so your about the same as a 3.88

    My '58 bus has the stock split case tranny, and even with 205/75-15s and a built 1776, I'm pretty much maxed out at 55. Anything i can do to mod the split case to get a few more mph outta the old gal?

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would usually change to a big nut later model trans. The split case usually had 4.375 gears with the .82 4th. small nut 1.39 to 1. Stock Big nut had 4.12 .82 and 1.26 to 1. I change them up to 3.44 .89 4th and 1.26 big nut. then you can go as fast as you want. Even if you find a stock small nut from a 61 and later that would be better because they had the 4.12 my truck goes 60 max. with later trans.
