  • Cataloochee Valley, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, closed in February of 2020 due to the road construction, but didn't reopen until June 8th of 2020, due to Corona virus closures of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Come along with us, as we head into the Cataloochee Valley for the first time since it's re-opening. You'll see what's open, what's closed, the severe road damage past Palmer Chapel, and if you hang to the end, Elk!

Another great video. Catalooche is another place I want to explore. The old homesteads, cemetery, and schoolhouse....! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for showing the current conditions. My family are the Caldwell’s that originated from Cataloochee, glad to know that the house is undamaged.

Morning or evening are both good. Either just after sunrise, or an hour or two before sunset. Glad you enjoyed the video. We're working or a larger video for Elk Rut, that so far has some really great footage. Can't wait to publish it :-D

That's a lot of road damage! My favorite section of NC since they reintroduced the elk and then the BRP as # 2 . Thanks for sharing.

Cage in the field-Possibly a wild boar trap?

looks to light weight, hogs are strong and could bust out of that easily

We thought hogs too at first, but as wingnut said, they aren’t strong enough.

Direct descendant of the Caldwells from Lincoln and Catawba counties here in NC who also tie in with the Cataloochee Caldwells.

Creek channels move. The cobble bed under the washed road, beside the current channel shows that the creek channel had been there in some time in history. Thanks for this video

Just to make sure before I drive all the up there.....Cove Creek Road or “The Cataloochee Highway” is now open. I love riding my horse up out of the Cataloochee Valley and have been waiting for the reopening of the road.

What will be open in September 2020? Hoping to get some photos and maybe do some fly fishing then. Thanks.

I think what you saw in the video will be open, in addition, Mt Sterling Rd/Cataloochee highway is now open as well. It was still closed in this video.
