As you know James McCauley 1812-1882 was the first generation to reside in Cades Cove. I am a 5th generation direct descendant of him. Donnie, thank you for your passion with the past.

I get lost listening to these true American tales, the narration is so authentic. As I sit here and listen and take in the images, I am reminded of how much I love my country and all of my brother and sister citizens. I thank the Lord for all of our blessings.
Thank you so much for these posts.
I never knew my grandfathers but imagine if I had, they'd have told me stories like these

@@daniellebranley8561 I know of some Russells and Hembrees from the area. As far as I know, there is no connection between them and my family. That does not mean there isn't on. After several generations in such an isolated area, most families were connected in one way or another.

Boy I really liked that old Church A lot, a lot of Sundays worshiping God and a many sermons many sunrise services, Easters, Funerals weddings Christmas plays dedications baptisms and like you said souls saved , and that's just one little Church in one little tiny place in the whole world and only a couple of hundred years old or so not to mention the rest of the world and all the centuries gone by, when that last trumpet blows sure is gonna be a lot of us coming up out of that ground and going up, ain't they? lol

Thank you so much for this. My mother came from a little town in central New York State, Wayland. As a little girl, I sat with her and my Aunt Mary, while they drank coffee, smoked cigarettes and told stores just like these. I wish I'd had the writing skills to write down the stories, but I was too little. I believe that we Americans are losing out history. Thank you for adding Cades Cove to our knowledge.

Donnie, thank you for this video. Cades Cove holds some very special memories for my family. In about 1986 we took my Mom and Dad to Cades Cove on their 45-wedding anniversary. We parked on loop road at one of the small parking places and walked into the field and sat around under a big oak tree and listened to Mom and Dad tell about their wedding. Mom was 16 years old, so they went from Tennessee to Spartanburg and got married. They shared 57 years together till Dad passed away. By the way, he was a Baptist preacher, Horace Higgins. Their wedding anniversary was on Nov. the 1st.

Thank you so much for putting this amazing storytelling video together! I love the stories of Appalachia in that area. My daddy's (who died 2 yrs ago at 93) family grew up in the park b4 it became a park, up around Pittman Center. And my mom, still alive & well at 90, grew up on Wears Valley Rd. Her Papa & Granny Wear owned the 100 acres that went up the mountain, which is now Wear Farm City Park. I'm 51. When I was a little girl, we used to walk from my Granny & Papa McCall's house, down Wears Valley Rd (which was almost all farmland then), to Granny & Pappa Wear's old homeplace & I would swing on their porch swing. I've been sad over the past 20 years to see so much of it torn down & "touristicized". But my Uncle Ronnie & Aunt Sue's old rustic cabin is right in the center of the entrance of one of the newer resorts on Wears Valley. And one of my cousins still lives in it.
Also, my 5th Great Grandpa Samuel Wear was one of the early settlers in that area. He signed the Tennessee Constitution. Anyway, I love all the history of our area. Thank you for this information & I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Thanks for sharing this! I’ve been to Cades Cove a many a times, but little bits like this I would have never known had you not shared it. I bet there’s a lot more little stories like this all throughout the cove. Some just like this, some even more of interest! Please keep the stories a coming as long as you can.

It's nice to hear stories from the other side of the mountains. Collie Payne was my great-grandfather and I had the pleasure of visiting him before he passed. I wasn't old enough to remember much, but I did get to meet Barry, his steer. Barry was too old to pull a plow by then but he was still an impressive creature none the less.

When I was in the 5th grade, we stayed at Camp Tremont for a week as a part of a school trip, way back in 1983. One day they took us to Gregory's Cave. We got to go inside. Inside it, there is a phosphorescent rock. I never will forget the park ranger having us to turn off our flashlights, then snapping a camera flash on the rock. Sure enough, it glowed.
    Loved the video! Thank you!!

More wonderful stories of a bygone era. I can't emphasize how much I enjoy your videos. I have known a good number of folks from your neck of the woods and they knew those times real well. I was a young buck back when I knew them. I'm so glad that I got the opportunity to listen to their tales and I still try to share those tales with folks that won't ever be able to hear those stories. Those folks of my past acquaintance are all gone now but their lives and times are still fresh in my memory and I just love keeping them alive by relating the remembrances of their past. Blessings to all.

@@donnielaws7020 You are welcome. I have to tell you that some of my fondest memories are of the incredible food. When visiting family our first meal upon arrival was a big pot of pinto beans with pork, fresh sliced tomatoes from the garden, cornbread and biscuits. Then when you thought you couldn't eat another bite, there was chess pie, 7 Up cake and apple stack cake for desert. Wow!

We always try to visit yearly, matter of fact we were just there when the snow and freezing temps hit. It was just breathtaking, Seeing the beauty of the light snow on the cedars, oaks & rolling hills & mountains. My grandpa was born in TN. Which is why I love the overhauls! Thank you Mr. Donny for the scenery and the history lesson. There's a little out of the way Cemetery down here about 5 miles from where I live that I frequent every once in a while. It lays behind an old house and is surrounded by a cow pasture. Lot of history around that place too. There was a pretty famous shootout that happened there in the 1800s, two U..S. marshals killed, 4 or 5 of the participants and several bystanders. But the main reason I go there is that both my wife's great great grandfather and my great grandfather are buried there. Both of them named George. Ii didn't know it when we married but her folks and mine had been rubbing shoulders and had been friends and neighbors for a long long time, stretching back to north and south carolina, Tennessee and Georgia from the 1700s. Funny how with time and people's associations and movements nothing seems to move in a straight line. It just seems to circle with folks and their descendants coming together time after time down through the years.

As a native to the area after you finish with cades cove you might want to check out cataloochee park. It's a lot like cades cove. A long gravel road over mountain then it turns into paved road. One way in, one way out. They are places all over these mountains like this. Most are known only to the locals.
