LA vs. NYC: Which is Better?

  • It's great to be back in Los Angeles, California! I'm here for a long layover -- visiting friends, and applying for a 6-month multiple entry visa to Thailand (fingers crossed I get it!)
Anyways, L.A. is the second biggest city in the U.S. and it represents the entire West Coast. Whenever I'm here, I cannot help but compare it to America's biggest city, New York, which represents the East Coast.
While both LA & NYC are big, cosmopolitan and diverse -- they are different in just about every way possible. Find out why in this video.
I'd love to get your thoughts - Which do you enjoy better - LA or NYC? Do you agree or disagree with my points? Comment below!

    Here's my anecdote:
My friend lived in NYC for 5 years. He had very modest success as an entrepreneur, making close to 6 figures. He also had below average credit. During his time in Manhattan, the best living situation he could achieve was a rundown studio apartment shared with another person who was often out of town. Prior to that, he suffered through places with rat infestations, small apartments with multiple roommates, and due to his less than stellar credit, he often paid over 10k just to move into places. He was impressed and motivated by the skyscrapers, culture, wealth and women, but he often described his quality of life as "shit."
Since moving to LA, he got a really nice one bedroom apartment in West Hollywood (prime area); living alone. He did this with the same income and credit. He describes the move as "an upgrade." He's still surrounded by wealth, culture, and beautiful women, but no skyscrapers. The lackluster architecture doesn't bother him because he loves LA's weather and the landscape (hiking in the hills/canyons, and going to the beach). He swears he's never going back to NYC, though he appreciates going through the challenge of living there.
    True story

There are about 800 different languages spoken and represented in New York you just can’t beat the history. Also, NY is way more than just Manhattan! Step into Brooklyn or Queens and you’ll find some of the most diverse neighborhoods in the world all within a few blocks of each other. Yeah New Yorkers are stereotypically seen as “cold” and “impatient” but they just know how to make it in one of the busiest and toughest places in the world. When they do need to though they come together like nobody else can. The city after 9/11 truly healed itself because of the people and the NY spirit. It’s a city incomparable to any other love NY so much.

NYC is great if you're a humorless top school graduate hyper-competitive workaholic or rich kid. Sure, a wide variety of people live there, but if you're a middleclass transplant, your social options are more those types of people, not the recent immigrants from China that live all the way out in Flushing or various other recent immigrant ethnic groups in Queens. It's not convenient going out that way. In day to day life as someone working there in a full time job, you are surrounded by the very serious, career/status obsessed yuppies and almost everything seems oriented towards them in Manhattan until you go north of the UES.

LA has way more to do. And if you include everything built off of it from Orange County, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, there are endless things to do. I was raised at the foothills of Big Bear mountain before they developed the houses, so it was fun being a Chaparral Kid roaming the Orange Groves doing desert things and then having the Mountains 30 minutes a away and the beach about an Hour away.

Hey friend, I really enjoy your videos and how you live by the goal of spreading the knowledge of foreign places to others. You are definitely one of the most passionate and genuine content creators I have seen.
May i make a suggestion? Instead of making 2-4 minute shortish videos how about you make more vlog like videos around 10 minutes long? Less of the script and more of your genuine experiences in these countries, I would gladly sit down for 10ish 15ish minutes to just enjoy you videos. But I’m not saying to get rid of the shorter videos necessarily. I would love to see your personal interactions and experiences in other countries. For example you can include segments that don’t have a heavy script and are more easy going. Like conversations your found interesting and different, I would have enjoyed listening to that taxi/uber driver comparing and contrasting the U.S. with his home country a little bit more. I would enjoy you walking around a market, looking at exotic goods you can’t get anywhere else, bartering, how you interact with other and how they interact with each other and the general atmosphere of the market. You can record your experience visiting temples and shrines (I know some places do t allow recording tho) rather than just listing their names. You can interview locals and observe how life is different in different countries. You can record your time visiting natural spots such as coves, mountains and springs. I’m sure you have had a plethora of experiences while visiting different countries.

depends on what you value. I absolutely love NY more, but there's a certain grind to it that wears away at you after ~1-2 years or so, especially if you're poor. it's easier to be poor in LA, but there's just more beauty, excitement, vibrancy to new york. people are smarter in NYC, more attractive in LA (although tons of attractive people in NY as well, and you'll probably see them more often because everyone is just in their cars all the time in LA). LA just seems like a place to live, make some money, enjoy a chill life, whereas NYC is somewhere that people go because they have strong passions and motivation to do something cool.
