Thanks for the info. Some of the kids I work with who normally dislike reading love reading Fighting Fantasy and Choose Your Own Adventure books. I also have them play classic text adventures, like Zork, and they really like those too.
The best thing about reading gamebooks like Forest of Doom for me as a kid was you got to the end of the book (I didn't let myself 'die') yet you had only read quarter of the words in the book, because each path leaves several paths unread!
Good review. Recently bought the book as one of the "older" people the book may or may not have been targeting. Have 57 of 59 of the original run and bought this one for my collection even though I have not heard positive reviews.
Hello marco have you read the Click your poison and Destiny's role: zero to hero books? I have a lot of FF books and i own 3 books of destiny quest books. Now im looking into the Endless quest D&D books, but this CYOA books are a booming and a bit overwhelming. I want to buy some new ones, cant get m all. what are/were your personal favorites?
Came for the review... stayed for the charming Mediterranean accent. Actually, I'm curious as to whether you are aware of, or even backed, the Graphic Novel Adventures which were on Kickstarter recently. Similar to FF but in graphic novel form and more complex with varied non-fantasy settings. Thoroughly enjoy and appreciate your reviews! Thank you for all the work you do.
Are there any other new FF books that came out recently? I work with kids, and they love reading them. My boss will order them if I provide him a list. Thanks!
they reprinted Warlock of Firetop Mountain, Deathtrap Dungeon, Creature of Havoc, Citadel of Chaos, and Forest of Doom. The actually new ones (Port of Peril and this one) are really not as good as the old ones.
There are a few more reprints also... there are 10 reprinted and 2 new so far. Steve Jackson is supposed to be writing a new one but only time will tell. shop.scholastic.co.uk/series/1345
As someone truing to complete my collection it feels bad that the newest entry seems to be so low quality. It seems the gates of death is in a strange limbo, trying to captivate both newcames and old fans. I wonder how big is the market for high quality new FF books.
Not read the last two new books yet, seems they need to bring Jonathon Green in to write a book, Night of the Necromancer, Stormslayer, Howl of the werewolf were great books that brought something new to the format.
You made a big mistake early on comparing the stamina loss with port of peril. In Port of Peril the mistake was that you DIDN'T lose Stamina whereas the text helped you gain points you couldn't have lost. Gates of Death is a huge FIX compared to this as it let's you lose Stamina before being given the chance to regain it. I can see why that could be a frustration to a reader but it's not the same flaw. Personally it caused me no offence and I feel like it would not have bothered you so much had you recalled what PoP's problem was correctly. Anyway, on with the review I'm sure it will be better from here...
Great review. Pretty much covered everything I didn't like about the book. They even hyped it up seeing as Charlie Higson is pretty well known and popular so the result made it even worse. Definitely among the weakest in the series.
you watched it after it was just uploaded. It takes an hour or so before TH-cam processes new videos and they play smoothly. Try now, it's working perfectly.

I agree with everything you say, you understand how FF books should be.
marco. What is the best book of this style? I am an OTR truck driver that loves to game and a book /game/ adventure, sounds awesome.
Seems like the newer books are a bit of a minefield. Appreciate your reviews to steer me clear of them 👍😌
00:58 Yep I LOLed.

Wizard had some new books some years back, and there was that zombie book a few years back
Wayne Daly I found a few Lone Wolf books at Goodwill, but haven’t read them yet.

Yeh Agree about the illustrations, they look awful compared to the original 80s books.

There is an actual ass monster? What was this author thinking?

There is a problem with this video, maybe you should re-upload.
plays for me. What problem do you have?
marcowargamer it was stopping every two seconds, but now its fine :) thanks
This video is so aweful. For every 5 sec it plays, it hangs for 30 to 60 sec.
I didn't have this issue so it is probably just you.
