    Loving the vlogs Katie! I may have said this in the first one but I'm finding reading vlogs particularly calming and comforting at the moment so this was perfect 🙂. I love your Platform 9 3/4 earrings! Sounds like you are having a fantastic reading month and I'm glad you had a nice staycation 😀. My reading has been pretty horrible this month but I have finally got back into a good pattern over the last few days so I am hoping *fingers crossed* to finish 4 books for the Clearout, not at all the number I wanted but I'm trying to tell myself that it is ok that my reading has been weird this month. 😀❤️📘❤️🎧. Hope getting back into the swing of things with work was easy and that you and Nick are doing well, stay safe🙂❤️.

    I tried to listen to the audiobook of A God In Ruins and couldn't quite get into it , I will probably try it again but I need to wait a while first. Interesting hearing your thoughts on it xx You have done really well clearing out your back log of books xx

    I hope you aren’t having to go into work and are able to work from home. I’ve never read Kate Atkinson, but I have been curious. It seems like Life After Life might be a better place to start.

    • @katiejlumsden

    You made me regret unhauling my copy of Death and Mr Pickwick a few years ago. In retrospect, I think I should have waited until I'd read more Dickens before approaching the book. Frog Music is an Emma Donoghue I'd been toying with picking up - I haven't read any of her work yet and so I feel completely unsure as to what should be my first book of hers to read.
    (side-note: I'm rather jealous of your mixing bowl.)

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frog Music is great - I think it'd be a good place to start with her. Death and Mr Pickwick is probably best for hardcore Dickens fans - I really did love it.

    All the books you've mentioned sound so good! You've inspired me to try and power through a few of the books I've been nursing...I recently finished "A Long Fatal Love Chase" by Louisa May Alcott, which is exactly how the title describes it haha. If nothing else, it was surprisingly modern and intense, compared to her other writing. Can't wait for your next video!

    kate Atkinson with Life After Life, manages to intrigue and surprise her readers with her stories full of reversals of roles, thus revealing the delicate and always complex plot of sentimental relationships and human relationships in general.

    So far off my backlist TBR I’ve read
    Frog Music
    The Good People
    The Trick to Time
    I’m going to continue trying to get my list of 57 books down, slowly but surely.
    Books I’ve had unread for over a year include
    The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek
    Home
    The Stone Diaries
    Larrys’ Party
    Iza’s Ballad
    A Spell of Winter

    Really liked this vlog. I’m curious about the one element you didn’t like in both Atkinson’s books. I have similar feelings about God in Ruins, I liked it but it was not as gripping as Life Afrer Life. The cheese cake looks delicious. I see you have your recipes hand written in a notebook, are they family recipes?

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! So, I collect recipes I use a lot in a notebook - some of them are recipes from my mum, or recipes I've made up myself, and some of them are written down from online recipes I've found or recipe books that my parents own that I don't :)
      So, I loved Life After Life but felt the killing Hitler bit was a bit contrived. And then in A God in Ruins the last chapter saying basically that Teddy's life is all a fiction I didn't love - like, it was a great story without the need for a meta element?

    Hi Katie. Would you say you need to have read the Pickwick Papers to fully enjoy/get a richer experience from Death and Mr Pickwick?

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you do. I don't think you'd enjoy if really if you haven't read The Pickwick Papers. You don't need to have read any other Dickens, though.

      I would recommend the Independent game, What Remains of Edith Finch. It is a short, 3 hour game with a heavy emphasis on narrative and story telling. Plays/Reads like a really good short story. Bet you and Nick would enjoy it.

    It's an unusual question, are you using the bookmark as a pacer to read fast?

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sort of - I always read with a bookmark; I have astigmatism and reading with a bookmark helps my eyes focus and me not loose track of the lines.
