Heads up with Yunaka on Maddening, she's still very useful but you have to keep enemy hit chance on her at about 1-15% hit as enemies wont target her at 0 hit chance so don't go too mad with avoid skills and engravings.
Quick note: When Alear is Martial Master he's not considered the [Dragon] sub class. He's still a dragon in the sense that wyrmslayer is effective, but he does not get the super instruct from byleth. You get the [Qi Adept] luck +10 Qi Adept is one of the sub classes that gives 100% proc on bonded shield at least
One of the abilities showcased in the Chrom emblem video that was posted showed that when synced Robin will always chain attack. Could have some interesting synergy with Boucheron (depending on what else that emblem provides of course)
One thing I feel like is underrated is Mage Yunaka. She has surprisingly high magic growth, more than double that of Clanne's, your actual starting Mage. She can also use Thunder Tomes then to actually do "Zappy", which is arguebly more important-
Support Martial Monk Alear has been so liberating on my Maddening run not having to try and salvage Alear's offensive stats. The big upside to MM Alear for me is, slap Lucina on him and you have 100% bonded shield on everyone all the time for bold enemy phases. Now that wouldn't great on its own since enemies could still 2 range and merc Alear. But that's where a often overlooked Lucina skill and a particular Maddening mode mechanic come hand in hand: Avoid stacking with Dual Support to make Alear unhittable and invisible with easy 160+ avoid because Alear can support everyone and easily ram Dual Support's +90 Avo with any three adjacent allies. Alear giving everyone +3/-1 damage is the cherry on top that makes everyone more effective.
Who would think that the Dragon Warrior true power was the friend he made along the way? What name should that invincible 5 man band should have? The Furious Five sounds nice. Or you could add a Micaiah Warper and turn them into the Ridiculous Six.
My Malear is Offensive AF and most of the time he has no Emblem and only late game I gave him the Fire Engraving. It seems that people have different versions and difficulties with him. Mine he absolutely wrecked things up.

You should totally try a martial master Chloe build. I know you have alear as martial master staff bot, but Chloe can be a huge damage carry as martial master. The plan is to start her out in her base class and griffin knight for the speed growths and then class change her after ch.17 where you get her best weapon, Divine First art for Quad attacking. The weapon is actually pretty easy to upgrade and on corrin engraving will have a 30% chance on average to crit with 4 hits. So you're very likely to crit. Erika emblem for lunar brace true damage, true damage from Chloe personal, and true damage from alear personal stacks beautifully in a quad attack and can one shot near anything in my Maddening no DLC run! Speed taker from lyn and Perceptive from Marth to make her more dodging in-between hits 1-2 and 3-4 are the skills I used.
If you do plan to put Alear into Martial Master then you are going to want to save up SP for Erika's 'Lunar's Brace' to help with his dmg. It's pretty much a must have for offensive Martial Masters
Just ran a support Alear Maddening with the following setup - Class - Divine Dragon Emblem - Byleth Inherit Skills - Canter + Staff Mastery Let's you get off some nice stat boosts with Instruct and Goddess Dance. Keep him in Divine Dragon and max Liberation and feed him kill or two while trying to refill the Engage Meter in between Engages. Can get 3-4 dances off in end game maps.
Best starter class at level 1 for optimal plague dr is sword fighter into any advance right to wolf knight. But axe cav is the quickest in terms or resources. Less second seals level 2 on leif.. also dr should be assisting Boucheron 70% of the time or whatever duel assist plus is. Great video legman I like your ideas on everything. I highly suggest anything that boosts avo on the dr cause unlike a crit dodge tank his purpose is to survive. The dagger lief skills are super cheap and effective. Canter can help you find avo boosting tiles. All of marths avo boosts. And I can stress enough to put a miciah engrave on a dagger for hom before you lose her.
Wolf knight Jean is rough. His personal doubles class growth. Wolf knight has 5% strength, meaning his base 20% goes up to only 30% on Wolf, compared to Berserker giving +60% strength going yp to 80
That's the beauty of backup tho. Since it's fixed damage, it doesn't really matter what Jean is getting for strength since the majority of his damage is gonna come from knife backup. It's a support style of play for sure.
Yeah the plague dr build isn't jean doing damage as wold knight. The point is utilizing his super high speed growth. Giving him better movement than their and having dual assist plus and a lucina emblem ring. He is ment yo plop on the center of battle and backup 70% of all attacks poisoning the entire field twice over. Essentially softening up the field. You get exp since enemies are all poisoned for the kills. Also his crit rate is still pretty damned high.
I’ve been having so much fun on maddening playthrough with my Martial Master Alear, I named her One Punch and have been soloing maps. I had Sigurd for a bit for the canter to hit and go back to an avoid tile, and sometimes Celica to warp ragnarok and quickly get chests/ defeat bosses. The avo mechanics on maddening make it so you can just walk around certain enemies and just defeat the boss in a few turns. On Anna’s paralogue I just used Sigurd to quick,y get to the chests, didn’t open Anna’s so I didn’t have to worry about her and then went and finished the boss.
Early game with Alear you'd probably want to run healing light to heal yourself as you heal others to keep you topped off for chain guard possibility., Love the video ideas though, i'll have try it. I just finished my second maddening run and this has been the first time Alear didn't suck, I have a strength drop plus a killing edge with an engrave and i crit just about every single hit, not too shabby.
as a few others have mentioned, alear (ah-leer, not ah lee air) does not keep the dragon typing, its entirely based on class, so only his unique class is dragon. and personally i think if you want to go full support royal knight probably is the best option, reforge, better stats and a purely physical weapon type with the option to use a flame lance woulds suit his growths more. his passive also does pair REALLY well with say chloe as a martial master with eirika though. and the corrin yunaka build is basically only useful on hard or lower tbh, i honestly find sniper yunaka with lyn is 100 times better, and corrin on a mystical unit for the fire is super useful
If you can save up for it Lunar Brace could be good for Boucheron. I bought the highest tier of Axe Power I could afford (Sword Power for your Hero Boucheron) and he was still very much lacking in damage by the end of the game. He DID get very close to one rounding one of the final bosses health bars but that was only because I had someone else break him with the Fracture staff and that helped Boucheron do 50% more damage because of Warrior's skill.
It's been great! Haven't finished the run where I'm using it yet, but having the ability to heal, move, and provide buffs has been awesome. I don't miss having the extra damage either, my team is more than capable of slaying out without Alear attacking.
dodge tank yunaka in maddenning needs some finesse as if the enemy can't hit her they just ignore her, but with engraves that reduce avoid or enemies that have a support in range you can trick the enemies into thinking they hit her but in fact they aren't. to note the AI does not register corrins pair up as dealing no damage so they will still attack at 0% hit chance if they have a 0 dmg support in range
Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I feel like if you are using DLC everything should be pretty much smooth sailing no matter what units and builds you have. The DLC paralogs will give you lots of extra experience and items, having more emblems in the midgame will give your army a ton of extra SP, and Tiki will turn whatever unit you put her on into a late game god.
This is all true, which is why I'm avoiding utilizing dlc benefits for my units that I have builds in mind for wherever I can. No dlc Emblems on them that give extra sp or exp. No usage of dlc Stat boosters on build units. And I'm not gonna be bringing build units into the DLC paralogues (obviously can't drop Alear so I'm just minimizing his usage.) My goal is to have my build units be as close to Vanilla as possible so that people who don't have the DLC OR who don't want to use it can still utilize my guides.
I'm glad someone else has started to figure out how Boucheron works! I've been work shopping him for a few low-tier maddening playthroughs, and have progressively improved the build. You have the correct idea with Marth (and later Eirika), but build him as a sword bow knight with Hero Alear. Position Alear!Byleth with a javelin/hand axe at range 2, as normal, and bow knight with Boucheron. His build and speed are high enough to double with brave sword and brave bow, all getting a +5 from bouch + Alear skills. If bouch didn't have to move, he will literally always hit with his high dex scaling. He consistently gets 70%+ hit rates against thieves in avo tiles. Hero is arguably one of alears best classes, and it brings Bouch from factually bottom-tier to the realm of great units like Alcryst and Merrin. He'll never be top-tier like Ivy, Kagetsu, or Anna, but entirely end-game viable.
i made jean a wolf knight too but it was mostly because every ten year old boy wants to ride a dog into battle
You're damn right they do! 😁

Honestly, if you want Alear to be the best Support Unit in the Game, just keep them in Divine Dragon and use Corrin/Byleth.
