Harry Nilsson's THE POINT (1971) - Alan Thicke Narration - Third Telecast Restoration

- In the mid 80's, my parents recorded the third telecast of Harry Nilsson's 'The Point' from TV on VHS. To this day, it is the ONLY recording I've ever found of this supposed lost version of the film.
The Point first aired February 2, 1971, and was the first animated special ever to air in prime time on US television. It appeared on the ABC television network as an ABC Movie of the Week. The film was directed by Fred Wolf and produced by Murakami-Wolf Films in association with Nilsson House Music, adapted from Harry Nilsson's album of the same name.
In the animated special, there is a framing device of a father telling his son the fable as a bedtime story. In it's initial airing, the voice of the father was provided by a friend of Nilsson's, Dustin Hoffman, who agreed to take $20,000 for his narration to be used on one broadcast, so for later airings of the film, the narration had to be re-recorded.
On it's second telecast, the narration was provided by Alan Barzman (this version is still currently lost) and on it's third telecast (this version) the narration was provided by Alan Thicke, best known for playing Dr. Jason Seaver on the 1980's sitcom "Growing Pains".
So here it is - my gift to you, completely restored picture and audio, spliced together by me from my recorded VHS copy and the original DVD release of the film (a MUCH better looking copy than the recently released bluray). This version, once considered lost, is now found.

I remember my dad made me watch this when I was a kid. I remember having a bad attitude about it for no reason. Now I see why he wanted me to watch it. And I appreciate him for it.

Tears dripping down my face just at the first song, says a 58 year old man. Childhood memories, even such nice ones, sure can stir up emotions.
My older brother had this Soundtrack on LP and I used to play it all the time, probably 8-10 years old.
My brother and I used to watch this movie all the time too. He passed away. It’s very near and dear to my heart.
I’m a 57 year old former Paratrooper and get overcome by emotion when I hear “Me and My Arrow”. I first saw this sitting on the living room floor with my Brittany Spaniel, Spotty. Ours is a Lonely Generation and we covet these mysterious, magical moments. We reach back and touch them and resolve our hearts to Kindness once again. It’s good to cry about good things.

@@maca27dog I was around 8 when I first saw the Point as well, but I grew up in the 90s. I had a teacher who brought in a tape of it. I loved it then and I still do. I am super glad this is up here so I can enjoy it again
I remember when it was on, I was a little kid.. We weren’t allowed to watch it. My brother, sister and I were pretty upset.
Something so sweet and wonderful about this movie is that despite Oblio being so different from everyone and everything in the village, the people are so nice to him (except the count and his son). He plays with other kids, he's had a great loving family, everyone is so friendly to him. Everyone even gives him a big farewell when he leaves and a big welcome when he returns. It's just so heartwarming that I can't help but tear up whenever I watch this movie

The original is Harry Nilsson. The animated film original is Dustan Hoffman, then Alan Barzman, Then Alan Thicke, THEN Ringo in the 80's/90's.

I was 6 and half , sick in LA Community Hospital, dying with a tube in my mouth and tubes in my arms . When I came about a few minutes before this cartoon came on and I watched it and I love it .
I haven't seen it since, until tonight .
Harry Neilson was a music genius and it blew my mind that he also created this cartoons story line.
You can tell that the animator also designed the Beatles , " Yellow Submarine " .... thanks for posting this .

I named my only four legged baby boy Arrow. And he was and always be my very best friend. He and I wandered this pointless forest until he guided me to the point that everything had a point. ... then he left. I know my point in life because he accepted me, he found a point to it all!

I remember watching this movie in the seventies and always cried because of how different he looked and the way he was treated.There was something that even as a toddler,I could relate to...I had no idea that I was born with some physical defects face only defects deformed ear, (Microtia) no facial symmetry and yet I knew that he was like me,different and misunderstood. Amazing,now looking back of how self aware I was as a little baby is beyond me.
First watching and from the start this movie positively oozes charm and that unique 70s coziness. I'm too young to have experienced the 70s of course but can't stop watching the cartoons
I remember my father (who was a huge Beatles fan so with Ringo Star narrating) taking me to blockbuster to rent this and still to this day it resonates with me. My favorite childhood film and soundtrack. I bought it for him before he passed- he couldn't believe I found the soundtrack years later. I still sing these songs and I'm 45.
i’m 14. my dad used to play this record, and this film, all the time. i often have “me and my arrow” or “these are the people” stuck in my head. this was the first time in about 7 years since i’ve watched it. brings back memories -u-

I am…. In my 30s and made my parents play this record over and over when I was a kid after finding this colorful looking record on the record shelf. I never stopped loving it, and even today find myself singing it.

I’ve been haunted by the song Me and My Arrow, and images of the boy Oblio and his dog Arrow walking side-by-side, ever since I first saw The Point in the early-mid seventies. I would’ve been somewhere between 8 and 13 years old at the time. The tune and the refrain have stayed with me all these years but I just let the memory of them gently slip here and there in the vaults of my mind and did nothing to find out what the name of the film was that they came from. It was only when a few weeks ago I came across some old cassette tapes I’d made home recordings on that I heard Are You Sleeping?, which I had recorded off the television, that something tugged at my heart to trace its origin. I found the tapes among others in my father’s music collection as I was going through some drawers in my parents’ home, reminiscing about our lives together. My mother died earlier this year and my father nine years ago. The poignancy of my lost childhood and family life was brought home to me more keenly than I’d been able to feel before as I listened to my boyish voice talking to me about the day’s events, and preserving snippets of music from films like The Point. Searching online for the song Me and My Arrow and then finding your copy of The Point and watching it was a true crossroads in reuniting my older adult self, who had never forgot the effects the film, songs, and story had on him some forty-odd years ago, with the young boy who experienced them. Thank you.
This brings a tear to my eye, my father made me watch this when I was younger and it stays at the forefront of my mind. I listen to it to fall asleep when I really really can’t sleep. I was maybe 6-8years old when I first saw it, I’m 21 now and in college. This film brings me great comfort and I have a deep love and appreciation for it. It’s incredible to see the wonderful affects that it’s had on my life are present for others young and old. Thanks for sharing your story

Same with me, but im 16, so its 12 years, not 40. I just have had the song pop back in my head and I finally followed up on finding where the heck I heard it, and it matched the faint memories of the animation I remembered.
Same here, I’m 42 and have had that song running through my head since I was young - My son is a 16 year old artist and he made a character that reminded me of the point so I just showed my kids. Just as poignant all these years later and that song just has an incredible nostalgic power to it.
I just love Harry Nilsson! My older teenage brother had Nilsson Schmilsson, I have it now and 40 years later it still gets played.
I saw this movie for the first time when I was about 10 and as I have just watched it again at 59, I still see the true meaning and that we can still learn from this beautiful moralistic story today.

This is really something rare and good. I forgot about it then I forgot that I'd forgotten about it; if that makes any sense. I've got to set aside a block of time to appreciate The Point all over again. Fifty-one years ago. Those years seem to have flown right on by.

I saw the Dustin Hoffman version as a kid, we loved harry nillson, my dad played him all the time, saucer full of secrets, jesus christ your tall, lime in da coconut, such fun music to have as children, and then this, the point!

my mom showed me this when i was 9, she struggled with addiction and alcoholism, she passed away in a car accident days after showing me this movie. I always feel like she wanted to leave me with something before she left and this movie will always remind me of her

I fondly remember seeing this movie when I was a kid in the 70s. I was so happy then. It makes me want to cry. I am glad to see so many others appreciate this little gem.
This is my first time watch this video and I can’t I had a strong sense of nostalgia from it. It reminded of me back was 7 where I would set at the TV an watch Saturday Cartoon like Batman the Animated Series and this would be something I would enjoy watching this back then. This is a treat and I wish I watch it when I was a kid. More kids need to watch shows and movies before they were born, important lessons from the past can still be useful today.

I'm 35 and they had Reading Rainbow when I was a kid. I can't believe you're fifteen and saw it too. 😃. I just Googled it and the final episode of Reading Rainbow was in 2006, this makes me sad. The first episode was in 1983. It was a part of so many peoples lives. I wish it was still on. At least Sesame Street is still on.

I loved The Point the very first time I saw it. I was 21 years old. I introduced it to my 23 year old sister and she loved it too. I love you more than words can say. We always talked about Oblio and Arrow. I haven't seen my sister in 42 years. I love you Jocelyn!
I remember when I was in high school this was shown in one of my classes and I’ve never forgot this lovely, poetic, allegorical and musical masterpiece of a cartoon film. This version is slightly different with the voice of the father being different. Thank you for sharing this 👍❤️👉😊.

This is the first time watching this version with Alan Thicke. The version on Amazon is the one I remember watching in the 70's.

I haven't seen this in so long, I watched it on vhs as a kid. It's probably been at least 15 years, but I remembered the melody of Are You Sleeping as soon as it started playing at the beginning and I hummed along. I used to ask my dad to sing it to me all the time when I was little, along with Me And My Arrow.
To this day, I remember that final message. And it has stuck with me. Every now and again I look for it, because it a very important message.
I was raised on The Beatles, and when I was a kid, I digested anything related to them. My dad rented this movie for me to watch, and with Ringo narrating, I loved it immediately. It’s also wonderful in its own right. 💙💙💙

Man, I used to watch this all the time as a kid in the 80s. It was this exact version, too, in terms of narrator. I was lucky enough to find it DVD years ago. It's got great commentary and life lessons. Very unique and engaging. This brings back so many good memories. Thank you for uploading it. ❤️

My dad showed this to me when I was about 8 or 9. He said he watched it with his dad when he was about 16 or so. So him and I watched it together. Maybe one of the best memories I have with him.

I was in High school and this was on it was awesome. It came out just before the sir lift out of Vietnam. It had a VERY GOOD POINT.
Did not know there were other narrators, but I may have heard one or two of them, this is the one I remember the most though.

I was born in 1980, and this was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. My mom had also recorded the Alan Thicke version. Our VHS was lost eons ago, and I was never very thrilled with the Ringo Starr version on DVD.

Then my parents bought the DVD narrated by Ringo and tossed the VHS tape. I have been looking for this version for more than a decade. On an absolute hunch I searched TH-cam for The Point and came across this. I'm beside myself. I had all but given up on finding this version. Thank you so very much!

my big brother Barry had me and my younger brother quietly listen to the album when we must've been around 6 or 7. I've never forgotten it, just stuck with me through my entire life. Always had fond memories of that time in my life, when things were simple. the card catalog in the library was our internet, people played together, talked and listened to each other, the good ole days. now information is just a touch of our finger away. Thanks Harry Nilsson for the endless memories I'll always cherish, and big brother Barry for showing and teaching me good things. you both will always have a place in my heart.
This is the version I grew up with. The one narrated by Alan Thicke, aka the dad from Growing Pains. Though I wonder why there was never a version of Harry Nilsson playing the father.
Harry narrated on the album, Ringo was dad/narrator in original movie.
@@hoppyandhisholidayhelpers1714 Actually the original narrator for the film was Dustin Hoffman. Then it was Alan Barzman. Then it was Alan Thicke. And finally, Ringo was hired to record it for the video release, so technically, he's the fifth narrator.

@@multanocte6431 what Stephen doesn't mention is that these alternate narrators were just intended, never got published, there aren't recordings. (Maybe samples somewhere?)

Ever since I was like a toddler I'd somehow never forgotten about this movie. I'm 24 now. Watching it again and slowly remembering many times I daydreamed every other scene every other year. At least my weird fever dreams had... A point of interest.

I was shown this at school in the 70's, it was a school projection for all the classes. I liked it so much that about 10 years ago, coming back from a drunken evening, for some reason I ordered the DVD. And I still have it.
