I bet you wouldn't be so excited about this kit if you had to use it in real life. The kit is really awesome. The material (metal) that the cutlery is made of is super quality - stainless steel. Actually, everything that Yugoslavian military has ever made is high quality. I've used one of these kits in 1992-93. I even have one of those knifes now.The can opener is the best, although my wife still cannot use it after 14 years of marriage. :D

I am from exYU country and this kit is great, however it has some downsides. First I would point you some things you missed, knife has can opener on side of it, and if you see the notch on big plastic bowl (at video you closed it at wrong side so it cant close) it is used to attach it to the handle of metal bowl. Setuped like that mini bowl comes in the middle (tea/salad bowl), so whole set it can be carried with one hand for better management when you eat. Downsides would be lack of shallow frying pan as it is very hard to fry with big bowl, and bag that comes with it is made from very bad material - now days they use much better one (this is from cold war era). Also there is a lack of stove. I see you made review of Swiss M71 military stove which is copy of old exYU field stove. In YU there ware two types of those Agor 4 (much like M71 - for paratroopers and spec ops) and larger model Agor 6. Together with mess kit its bulky solution. I would recommend East German stove for use with this kit. Anyhow reason for not having stove with mess kit as an integral part is deployment of troops in YU mil tactic, and there are bigger (unit) field mess kits for cooking - size about A3 paper sheet and tall as A4. These bigger field mess kits are squared in wood box with added windshield stand for different types of fuel with a lot of options for cooking and are made stainless steel. (also there is this soldier mess kit of stainless steel (officer and contract soldier version) its much more rare and its made because of fact that Aluminum is not good for a long term use as eating pot.) If you are interested I can send you original army manual for mess kit. Sorry about my English and hope this helps.

      Hey there brother,
thank you so much for sharing your in-depth knowledge of this kit. I appreciate it and I know the viewers do as well. By the way, you English is great!
      Cheers my friend.

I would also like to add that cleaning it is a bit awkward since it's deep nd narrow. Otherwise great kit.

So many reviews of JNA mess kit , and no one show propper way of use !
First , kit is not intended for use as part of YU MRE ( SDO) , but to be used in conjuction with field kitchen ! So, for meals normaly cooked by cook!
Further on - kit is designed to be used as follows :
    - kit is usually worn on belt
    - prior to use , kit is pulled out from pouch , big plastic lid removed , and bottle put back in pouch .
    - big plastic lid/pot is hooked on free part of handle . Usualy kit was hold by
Left hand ,from below . Small pot/lid/cup was hold by fingers , seating on handle . Once on line , soldier must cooperate with fast guys in kitchen , rotating kit , alowing them to fill proper food, fast !
Usualy , soup goes in metal part, main dish in big plastic , and salad in small cup!
When on field , there is a problem to wash mess kit . field kitchen , on mess exit , provide some cans with boiled watter and some detergent , but soldiers usualy use too much of it Later , detergent was distibuted in small yellow bottles , no more than 30-50ml!
Latter on, soldiers “invent” so cold “ condoms” for mess kit !
Simple 1liter freezer bag was put inside pot, prior receiving meal. After meal, all you need is to throw bag away !
In general, keeping mess clean was real challenge !
I’ve been “luccky” during my service days- base kitchen was rebuild for two months in middle of Slovenian winter ! So, food was cooked in field kitchen, mess was under tent , all that in the midle of (air)base !!!

Not everything was bad in Yugoslavia. :)
Did u noticed small notch on one side of bigger plastic container? That is to attach it to the handle so alluminum part is on one side, plastic is on another. Soldier went with that combo to the field kitchen, holding it in the middle, where he would get hot food in alluminum part and hot water on another, to prepare tea or coffe from extract. Both cans would be very hot, so middle handle was used to carry them to the place where you would consume it. At the same time it is easyer to carry ballanced load than just one pan with 1kg of weight holding handle.
Peace of advice. You never pour wine or brandy into that plastic cantine. It will etch the plastic and it is nearly impossible to rinse. Soldiers used to smuggle alcohol from field trainings to the barracks. That plastic reacts with the acids in wine and next morning it is pure vinegar taste and/or smell which is impossible to rinse out with watter. Of course watter tastes awfull after being in that cantine during hot day. What you have is modern kit after Yugoslavia broke up. Before the cantine was made from alluminum as well and it was more durable ragarding wine :)

Also, the large plastic cup hooks onto the end of the pot handle.
I just picked one of these puppies up at my local Army/Navy store. I did pay a bit more for it, but it does look like a great piece of gear. I can't wait to try it out on a camping trip!

    • @user-pn7sm1ws9t
      @user-pn7sm1ws9t 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Bob Holmes Joining a 6 dl square thermoplastic bowl with the aluminium pot is previsioned for receiving prepared foods and ready-to-eat foods from mobile military field kitchens and mobile military porridge caldrons. Such a possibility exists for feeding the troops in difficult weather conditions or hostile environment, and I hope that's not what you are looking for. 1½ dl plastic cup is covering 1 liter liquids bottle (canteen) with a no-loss screw-on cap.
However, if you have ever wanted a sturdy and virtually indestructible piece of gear, which is not lightweight compared to a fancy titanium kits, or cheap, lightweight, and woefully inadequate clam-shell tin foil mess kits - you have purchased exactly what you have wanted and you will not regret it. I wish you to enjoy unforgettable moments on camping trips and outdoor activities.

Here, in Serbia, I bought last summer 3 of that, from surplus, it is made in middle 80's, excellent condition, each was 250 dinars, it is about 2,5$ for each, believe or not. :) These things are the best budget mess kit i ever found. I hope that you will be happy with that, you make a good deal. These things will last you for long my friend, be sure. :) Regards from Serbia. :)

The way it's designed and fits together draws in backpackers like moths to a flame, it's hard to explain why but it just fits together right! regardless of one or two drawbacks I'm glad I got one and with a little care it'll last for life, if you're a bit wary of the material the pouch is made of apparently the PLCE, BCB Crusader waterbottle/cook kit pouch fits this kit in and that gives you a few more carrying options. Thanks for the upload!

Like your review so much I bought one without the cover and utensils for $10.00 at a thrift store. I put the Yugoslavian mess kit in a Swiss combat pouch with a Boy Scout cutlery set and had room to spare for other things in the Swiss rubberized pouch.

the knife has bottle opener, and just below it a can opener (the sharp curved spike). also the metal handle goes into the square plastic bit on the big plastic cup, so you can hold both big cups in one hand, and it's extremely handy and very stable for putting it over your thigh or a branch, so you have both hands free...great piece of kit...just remember to wash it right away after using it, otherwise it could get bit smelly.

  • @CROSEN60

I love this set, very good value. My brother and I have used that kit both Canoe and Jeep camping. Very compact and easy to pack. My brother used one with German Esbit stove and tabs. The thick aluminum heats slower than the thinner east German or Swedish mess pots. We found it's best use is to heat up boiling water for cooking MRE boil in the bag style. I cooked SPAM and beans by placing the pot next to the campfire. This is a area where the thick aluminum helps you. The handle was never to hot to grab. One of the best ways to use this kit is with a small Trangia Alcohol stove set on a modified Esbit folding stove. (Cut center of Esbit out to allow room for burner) What is needs is a extra compartment to carry a tiny stove and be used as a windscreen pot/stand. I may buy a second set and see if I can make a container stand out of the main po.t

this is a good cheap kit. on long trips I use the h2o bottle for cooking only. it saves space by not having cook kit. then drinking water. then cooking water (if you can not filter). on short trips I leave the h2o bottle and cup behind and put my food inside the kit also saving space, it can be hung like a bear bag from the attachment loops and is relatively water proof .

Great over all package but the only flaw is that only one part is metal. The plastic feels like if you push it too hard that it will break. There are simply better mess kits out there but for the price, this is great for the money.

interesting peace of surplus kit: great form factor and cheap ;) It looks compact compared to the Swedish Army Mess Kit or the West German army mess kit, both of them heavy but bomb proof and no plastic parts. A third option is the BCB Crusader II Cooking System. It's a great system for bushcraft. Unfortunatelly is a little pricy but still compact and not really heavy.

It is interesting but I like putting stuff in my less kits. The canteen eats up all that space. I can also imagine it would be a little hard to eat out of being so deep. I have an East German mess kit and while I like it a lot it's find of hard to eat from for the same reasons. Still looks damned neat.

Hi, I have one of these and I was just wondering if the canvas bag could be used as a millbank bag in your opinion to filter particulate matter out of turbid water prior to boiling to make safe drinking water?

    • @NeillRobinson
      @NeillRobinson 10 ปีที่แล้ว

ps the knife in that kit can be sharpened razor sharp with something like a fallkniven dc4 (what I used) - just watch your fingers getting it into/out of the bag! Also, the knife has a can opener on it - which works well :)

This is not the original Yugoslavian Mess Kit.
I have the original and it is completely built out of aluminum+tin, the only plastic part is the canteen screw on cap.
This differs a lot in weight BUT you can fill your canteen with lightly filtered water and boil it without having to change containers

this "made in Serbia" isnt the original Yugo stuff, its made recently , in demand of those mess kits... too many have been lost due to people taking them home after they finish army service...and military throwing them away as broken to military junk yard.... old Yugo made dont have such made in Serbia card, because it was made in various places around former Yugoslavia and there was small card where was stamp when was made and in which factory...

A really great mess kit. However, DO NOT USE HEXI BLOCKS with it! It burned off some of the enamel and left hideous staining. I had to get another one. I didn't mind, because it's that good of a kit. It packs really well, thanks to the rectangular shape. I carry the canteen in a side pocket of my pack, and I store cooking items in the cook pot/large cup and put it in my pack's main compartment. I pitched the small cup, though. Very versatile unit. Highly recommended by moi.

Man these things were plentiful and cheap. Now you have to hunt. You were right these rock. Do you remember when summer rolled around and mom kicked you outside because if the school wasnt watching neither was she? Maybe that was me, anyway when I was thirsty, she told me to drink from the hose. Well one wif of these brings those days back to mind. Wow fresh out of the garden hose smell. So how did you get rid of that? Thanks in advance... Mike

Yugoslav mess kit. For when you want a square meal in the field, or rather a rectangular one.

Yugoslavia disintegrated in the early 1990's - almost 30 years ago! I am fairly certain that this is a much newer mess kit, which is definitely used by the Serbian army nowadays, and possibly by some of the other new countries formed following the collapse/war of Yugoslavia.

    • @SmilingGator96

+Perktube1 They're more versatile than pan-based kits. You can cook more and boil more water, or heat up drinks, etc. Also, less/easier to carry.
