This one was quite the beast of a topic - a lot was left out...
There’s a huge market for display *skeletons* around the world - nothing beats the real thing. It’s perfectly legal to buy and sell bones for medical training, yet there’s very few scenarios in which you can legally obtain ‘new bones’. Some come from people who donate their body to science but this isn’t enough to meet demand. An entire industry of grave robbing, cleaning and presentation exists - to supply a legal market, stocked by illegal means. A complete set is worth several thousand dollars. Historically the most valuable skeletons were children’s as they were rare and showed developmental stages - child kidnapping and murder for bones was prevalent under British India.
I would have liked to have talked about *blood farming* - it’s a cesspit of horror stories. This practice is most prevalent in (but not exclusive to) India, where the buying and selling of blood has been legal. Prisoners will be kept locked up, their blood being siphoned 3 times a week. There have been cases where people have been locked up for years until found, the constant lack of blood and oxygen making them too weak to escape. www.bbc.com/news/business-30273994
*Organ cloning* is a potential solution I left out of the video. It’s a huge field and would need a whole video to itself to really do justice. Mass cloned organs would certainly solve many problems. A potentially limitless legal supply of healthy organs would eliminate trafficking and organ waiting lists. However it’s still potentially decades away from being implemented in everyday patients and even then will be prohibitively expensive for most people. It’s an exciting field but it will be a long time before it solves today’s problems.
*3D-printed* organs are probably closer than organ cloning. Already 3D-printed organs have been used for drug testing and there’s a good chance of some real breakthroughs in the next 5 years. Again though it will likely suffer from many of the same economic barriers as organ cloning, it will be a while until it’s accessible to most people.
There’s some bodily items you can sell *legally*. Good hair can fetch up to $4000. You can sell your eggs for $8000 per cycle (way more if you went to an Ivy League School), and your sperm for $100 per ... “deposit.”

I’d highly recommend it if you want to know more, he also talks about exploitation in the international surrogacy and adoption markets, and the struggles of transporting cadavers across international borders.

*What does opt-out, opt-in & tacit mean?*
Opt-out: Your consent to donate organs after death is automatically presumed. However (in most countries) your family still has the option to deny donation after death - it is important to discuss your wishes with them in advance.
Opt-in: By default, you do NOT consent to organ donation upon death. To donate organs you must register your wishes via a formal program (if one exists), AND make your wishes explicitly known to your family.
Tacit Consent: Your consent to donate organs after death is generally implied, however there is often no formal program in place. Your family still has the option to deny donation after death - it is important to discuss your wishes with them in advance.

The natural state of organ failure is death of the person affected. Existence doesn't entitle anyone to avoid that fate.
Organ transplants are a luxury, yet you seem to argue the point on the same level as basic universal healthcare.
By opening up the sale of organs, supply skyrockets and therefore affordability improves.
Of course rich people will more easily afford the transplants - they already do, that's one reason why being rich is what people strive for.
But all those "poor exploited people" with "no other choice" by definition before legal sale had "no other (legal) choice" to get out of their, apparently live-threatening (since it leads to "no other option") financial situation. You create choice where no legal option otherwise exists.
The freedom to make a choice includes the responsibility to deal with the consequences of your actions - just like you'd have to allow people to ruin themselves with legal drugs if they choose so, you'd have to allow people to trade parts of their body and bodily integrity in exchange for money - as we do already today in prostitution, manual labor and work in general.

Is the flow of organs always from poor to rich? What about in a universal health care system, e.g. the UK's NHS. There are private hospitals, but also state-funded hospitals... if there were state-funded programs to buy organs from living or dead donors (with proceeds going to the next of kin) then isn't it possible that the poor's needs for new organs would be filled as well?
In the case of donations, that's how it works. But in a few market, the poorest would be the ones willing to sell at the lowest price and the richest would be the ones able to pay the most, so the flow would tend to be in that direction

Eyes? You can transplant those wtf, so blind people could transplant it?
Well... Yes, but blindness is in most cases a result of the nerves not the eye itself. So while it would be possible to transplant eyes and heal some kinds of blindness, nerves are (at least at the current state of medicine) impossible to transplant, because of the slow rate at which nerve-cells dublicate.
So that means you could (at least theoreticly) donate those nerves, but they would just be their in the recipiants body and they still couldn't see, because they wouldn't just attach to the eye and the brain.
