    Just got some glencairn and a snifter glass. Always heard a glencairn works best with some single malt scotch but I want to try them with bourbon and rye. The snifter works good with beer too like eisbocks imperial stouts more heavier types of beer which is why I got it because I love beer too but I'm curious how it works with whiskey since it is more of a brandy cognac glass.

    The nosing glass looked to be the best although I am going order some Riedel Spirits glasses.Glass thickness is ultra important for wine brandy cognac etc so it's hard to think that's somehow not important for whiskey. Compared to even my low end wine glasses the Glencairn is super thick. The design is nice and traps alcohol nicely.

    @claymccown 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m confused, you said that on the wider opening whiskey glasses that it doesn’t shove as much alcohol vapor into your nose and would allow you to pick up on the subtle notes from the spirit, but then said that you would never want to use the rocks glass to get the notes of the whiskey, even though it has the widest mouth of all the glasses. Does the straight walls of the other glasses have some magic effect on the way the aromas get released? Not trying to be snarky, just honestly curious.

    • @Bourbinsane
      @Bourbinsane  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The short answer for me is yes. Depends on the person but for comparison between and rocks and Canadian whiskey glass I tend to get more aroma out of the latter due to the bulb and curve of the glass. I use a rocks Glass more often at the end of the night when I'm just sipping not thinking. If I want to try to analyze the whiskey just a little I usually go for the Canadian. I think the bulb kf the glass and rounder shape can enhance the aroma as compared to a rocks. Just my opinion tho

    For the record that is not a true copita. That is the Amazon/spanish Copita. The official Glencairin Copita that is used by master distillers all over Scotland like Jim Macewan and Richard Paterson is a similar shape to the basic Glencairin yes, but it does not bulb as dramatically and the mouth of the glass does not flare out at the end like the Glencairn. This concentrates the vapors even further and increases the potency of certain smells. If I did not know the difference I would have gotten vibe from this video that they're the same thing, but one has a stem, when in fact the same spirit will smell distinctly sharper and more defined in one glass. The copita is definitely not a starter glass. Other than that detail, great video dude!

    You have missed ONE critical factor in the Glencairn. Its bulb takes exactly 60 ml. Lay it on its side and the whisky remains in the bulb. Roll the glass, and it will move in an arc around its heavy base. There is NO SPILLAGE of whisky!

  • @TheWhiskyExplorer

    Great vid! So, the Canadian Glencairn glass is meant for a rock(s). I’m a Canadian so I’m allowed to say that Canadian whisky, in general, is not great (it’s getting much better). I guess the idea is that with a rock it dilutes the whisky a bit and makes it more palatable. I use those sometime with an ice sphere.

      Bourbinsane with such high proof drink it pushes overpowering alcohol vapour to the top. It works with wine because wine is only 12% and the vapour is carrying the aromas without burning your nose. With whiskey, maybe roll the glass but don’t go swirling it roughly.

    Nice... We have a ton of glasses but GKap finds his way to the Glencairn most of the time!

      Can't go wrong with that! I actually am quite enjoying the bourbon trail glasses too!

    Glencairn glass more of a burbon glass isn’t right to me.

      What do you use a Gencairn for typically? If I want to pick apart a whisk(e)y be it Scotch or Bourbon, it is usually my go to glass

    $$PRICE$$ is a factor for this bastard.
    Norlan ~$50
    Glencairn ~$6

      Couldnt agree more. Major $$ difference and I doubt the norlan makes it any better overall than a Glencairn!

    instead of sitting there opening all in the video, why not just go over each of them instead. What a bloated way to keep the video longer than necessary

    It is Glencairn Glass--not Glencarin [sic] as your pop-up and your pronunciation indicate. Also, the shape of the Neat Glass is not "very unique." There are no degrees to unique. It is either one-of-a-kind or it is not.

    • @Bourbinsane
      @Bourbinsane  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes this was brought up in a few other comments as well. Never could spell to save my life! Which glass is your go to!?

  • @tombryan1
    @tombryan1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The first 2 are for mixed drinks, the 3rd is a neat glass, the 4th is useless, and 5th is a novelty, the 6th is too large for neat and too small for mixed, the last is ok, it can double as a wine glass, if that's what rocks your boat. There are good neat glasses out there besides the Glencairn, but these are not it.

    • @georgeghleung
      @georgeghleung 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I always thought the NEAT glass is actually used in some tasting competitions, while Copita/ISO glass is what used in Whisky blending labs (and can be cheaper due to greater proliferation in second hand)? How do they taste for Bourbon, Scotch (namely Islay), and Irish respectively?

    What’s the point of sniffing the drink just drink it

    • @Bourbinsane
      @Bourbinsane  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I enjoy the differences in smell between whiskey brands and types personally. If nose doesnt matter to you, rocks glass works just fine!

      In humans 80% of taste comes from smell.. if you don’t want to taste something, then just chug it down and don’t smell it, but if you want to taste something and really experience it then sniff and smell it.
