What's the biggest problem in skating? How to skate better on inline skates and fix your bad habits

  • Do you skate correctly?
    Do you have foot or joint pains during skating?
    Do you know if you pronate?
    How is your glide?
    Why does this all matter?
    In this video I explain why pronation, lack of glide and a high cadence can produce inefficient skating, slow speeds (despite effort) and even slow-onset joint pains. It's a vicious cycle of one problem accentuating another and every skater should be aware of whether they are pronating on inside edges and what to do to fix this and other related problems.
    Are you focussing on fitness, distance and speed skating?
    Then don’t miss this series of FREE STRIDE DRILLS (just choose your level).
    These drills will fix many common bad habits (inside edge pronation, short glide, V-ing set down, uneven stride, backwards push). Spending 10 minutes every time you skate training these drills will radically improve your skating. Give them a try!

      Bravo! Yes, correct technique isn't correct because someone says it is. It's correct because it works and produces results that are visible and feel-able. It feels right because the straight ahead set down gives you control at that moment (without your feet disappearing in opposite directions which is not exactly a comfortable place to be..... Only with feet straight ahead is it really safe to PUSH!

      Glad it helped! It's so important to get one's stride working efficiently, without pronation of excess V-ing and with a stable glide. Otherwise everything will stay "a bit off" in your skating forever and progress is slowed down in all other skills. Great job focussing on this.

      Oh no! Sorry to shatter an illusion. Are your feet and joints comfortable after skating for a couple of hours? I've been observing these things for almost 20years and take note when skaters tell me of foot and joint pains and then I cross reference with their skate habits..... If you wanted to address this then check out the free exercises which I'm sure you'll enjoy mastering (go for the Intermediate ones in the Fitness course). You may really enjoy 'unravelling' some things in your skate stride as when you pack it together again you may discover a whole bunch more speed potential and stability that you didn't have before? Let me know how that process goes if you chose to do it.

    This is a great video as stride is rarely broken down; I find this strange given how fundamental it is. I roll a lot of varied surfaces in a typical session which can make settling into a steady stride difficult. When I do find myself on smooth terrain, I try to put this technique into action and aim to get some outside edge at the beginning of each glide. I agree, it's impressive to see someone skate with efficient form like this, but honestly, I live for those hot-footed road-shredding sprints!

  • @onlycorner5565

    after watching the video examples i think the reason they v its becose they like skating with straight leg, i bet they started at an joung age and didnt relearn corect bend in the knees and leaning forwards on the weighted leg
    inline skating gets effortless if you hold your body weight on one inline/leg but beginners just walk like pinguins one leg after anaother.
    i thing number one lesson toimprove is holding all your body weight on one skate/leg for an decent amount of time and trying rotate your sholder area to do small carvings

      LIVING ON THE *EDGE*

    • @NikZvi
      @NikZvi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      gliding on the outside edge gives an additional power to the push .In fact it's a double push technique that is used mostly by speed inline skaters. They are doing two pushes in one move: one with the outside edge and second with the inside.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well spotted! I was trying to do centre edges but my natural stride is more outside edge (after a centre and straight ahead set down) and this is also the case for more experienced faster skaters. If you imagine having a straight line to follow it's impossible to always be on the line, how do you change foot? The slight outside edge takes you just off the line so you can then stand on it with the other foot. That was what I was trying to do subtly. Was also into the wind so I needed some push hahahahah

  • @bradafc86
    @bradafc86 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Love the videos getting a good vibe. I'm finding my right foot seems to be more angled then my left resulting in foot pain very quickly. Could this have anything to do with my skates.

      try to loose your laces a little. It usually helps.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't think so. I have seen this a thousand times. If the wheels are angled in on the inside edges of the wheels then this pronation over time will put strain on your foot, ankle, knee or hip (and it often moves from one joint to the other over time.....) The cause is the pronation. The fix is to learn to consciously change your edge to the centre (upright wheels) position. Then and only then will gliding become more comfortable and possible.
      Check out my free beginner level trainings for this.
      Click on "Free Trial" next to the Trailer video on this page.
      inlineskatecourse.com/skate-for-fitness-beginner/
      Im sure this will help.
      PS. I don't recommend loosening the laces as this will make your foot even less secure in the boot and could result in "rolling" of your foot slightly inside the skate This makes even more pronation. I suggest fairly tightly tied up laces, or better still hard boots which offer much more useful support.
      Good luck!

      Sure that's sweet. I'm actually doing really great! My 2 surgeons say i don't need surgery and they don't really understand how and why im so mobile and in not much pain. I know its the yoga and muscle strength I have which supports the hip joint and allows it to skate/cycle etc. As long as I keep up with my yoga, stretching and strength work then I'm good to go. I spend a lot of time maintaining my strong hip and leg as they are doing twice the work as I don't force my injured hip/leg to do almost anything. I skate very one sided but it's not visible thankfully.
      Very soon I'll be releasing "Yoga for Skaters" online class to help other skaters get into yoga, stretching and strength work to support their skating muscles and joints...... Im excited to be able to offer that support very soon.

    Pronating is the fault of either the fit of the skate or the need for an adjustment-if there is one on any particular skate. I don't think a person can alleviate it with technique.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Pronation is not about the skate, it's about the ankle position and YOU control that, not the skate. Obviously there are certain things that make it worse, including wrong size/fit, laces/buckles not tightened properly, having flat feet, etc. but first thing is technique. In fact, many people have good feet, right skate size/fit, etc. and still pronate because they don't pay attention to their technique. It's one of the most common mistakes in beginners and lots of people keep this mistake over the years up to an intermediate level. It can be solved with easy exercises but it requires some conscious effort. Asha has been teaching for 20 years and knows about this.

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Don't worry. At the very beginning it's ok to do some V, in fact, it's totally necessary! But later once your balance is ok you should get rid of that because your stride is supposed to evolve. The point here is that lots of people keep skating with a beginner's stride for ever, and that's detrimental.

      @@SkatefreshVideos Thanks. I learned to skate on quads and then just always skated the same way, step and glide as opposed to push and glide, when I got inlines. So I really had to work on correcting my stride as an adult. My 6 year old is following the same route (just quicker) and has been quad skating since the start of the year and recently gotten the confidence to try inlines. But like me, he's stepping and gliding and I want to find the balance of encouraging him to get a better stride but not discouraging him.

    What does it actually mean to V?

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. To V or not to V, that's the question! To V is regrouping on a V stance. After a push your right leg comes to the center again in order to glide while the left leg does the push, and so on. There is a moment both skates almost touch each other and that's called regrouping. If you look down during that moment and your skates are making a V shape you are V-ing. This is perfectly fine for an absolute beginners's stride where your weight stays on the center, but it should be improved later if you want more efficiency. When you does this V you are basically skating in diagonals, not really in a straight direction, your glide time is short and you get tired quickly. This can't be done by absolute beginners, but it's incredible to see intermediate or even advanced skaters still using this very basic stride. For further information about this matter I suggest that you take the online course skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-for-fitness-beginner-level-full-course/ It really gives you more efficiency and the looks it brings!

      @SkatefreshVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Definitely you can't glide much on uneven surfaces. Without a glide time you obviously get exhausted, but it's hard to say what your problem is without seeing you. If skates are low cost they may have bearings that don't allow you to glide. Bearings could be dirty or wheels could be too tight. But technique is the main factor, and if you are a beginner it's normal to have a V stance.

    i have a friend who does this, i tried to stop them, like goddamnit glide more, they try 2-3 strides, then go back to this awkward technique

    • @SkatefreshVideos

      Well spotted! Beginners often can't increase their glide without training a centre edge as that's the only balanced place to really be. So my Free exercises get them working their gliding ability safely before trying to put the back into their "normal" skating.

    I have a question regarding the skate fit. I just bought a new pair of Rollerblades. Actually Rollerblade Zetablades. Was very excited as the ones I currently have are about 20 years old. Much smaller wheels than the new blades. I tried them on for the first time today and my left foot feels like it is turning under to the outside. The right one seems fine but the left one doesn't feel right at all. My ankle feels like it is not supported or something. I've tried tightening them with no success. They are a size 8 and my shoe size is a 7 to 7.5. I'm wondering if they are too big or something? Help! very disappointing.

      @SkatefreshVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. I'm sorry but it's hard to say what the problem could be. Are they the same size? What you describe sounds weird, and Rollerblade Zetrablade is a nice model with a solid cuff. It should be fine unless it has a manufacturing defect. Can you contact the vendor? Maybe it just needs a calibration.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. This is Sergio From Team Skatefresh. First you need to see a doctor, maybe you have a fallen arch and need extra support for that foot. Once you have the extra support, probably an insole, then you need to focus on exercises to keep it straight. Asha has published videos about that subject already.

    does this apply to quad skating too? i don’t have my inlines yet (just ordered them) but i tried this at an ice skating rink recently and it was amazing. i feel like my quad skating stride is kind of slow and tiring and i’m not sure how much of that is just the nature of quad skates (larger contact area with the ground, and different mechanics vs inlines or ice) or my stride technique being off.

      Sorry to hear this.
      If you fell badly I assume it was you fell over backwards.
      Please do not continue without some detailed instruction to help you. You will not automatically do the right thing on skates when you start and now you have fallen your body will be even more tense than it was before.
      Please use my FREE TRAINING for absolute beginners and please do ALL the exercises off skates first and then on skates on the grass as shown in the videos.

      You have wheels on your feet. You're gonna fall. Skate on a flat area and don't skate faster than your skill level until you improve. Wear a good helmet. I wiped out a couple weeks ago and smacked my head on the pavement. I was wearing a good helmet and was still silly for two days.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that's absolutely true. But if they spin around the park and do so for long enough the bad technique habits can start to create pains and strain on the joints. This is what I want to help people avoid as this really puts people off skating and taking it up seriously.

      Thanks for the compliment on my skating but I try to lead by example as a skater and an instructor and I value my head and brain. On the few occasions I have been filmed not wearing my helmet (eg the NYC street skating video) I am blasted with a zillion comments about my irresponsibility not wearing a helmet and I agree with them, I forgot my helmet that day in NYC)....... I very very rarely fall over and have only hit my head once in 19 years of teaching and skating......and I was wearing a helmet when I hit my head (from falling over a twig I didn't see backwards). I was very happy that I was wearing a helmet because the sound of my helmet hitting and scraping along the ground was hideous. We should all protect ourselves as we choose.
