I had the pleasure of making a roll up 2m j-pole with Adam K6ARK at an antenna building workshop. He trimmed the top and then took a little off the bottom. Was magic. Going to have to try this one now.

The entire coast didn't fall off? Drat. Those charges were supposed to cleave it all off. Also, why weren't y'all evacuated before. OK, I need to go work over some henchmen that were supposed to be taking care of things.

On that there J antenna fold the 1/2 wave & 1/4 wave ends back to adjust tuning... which also gives you a hanging loop for free & yes dipoles do seem to work somewhat better, at least they tend to have wider bandwidth than J antennas. I'll have to try to model a zip cord J ant & see how much the dimensions change from 300 ohm or 450 ohm versions. Have a nice apocalypse vaycay! "The End Is Near" Lulzz

Could the issue with both antennas be the bnc adapter? I remember seeing something about those in a video. Good video for being on vacation.

I actually know where Balboa and 805 are. Been there several times for work.

There are 3 measurements for J-Poles. But how good are the values for 300 ohm verses zip cord which the ARRL antenna book says is 100 ohms?

I want to see what the best antenna you can build into an aluminum frame hiking backpack.

It'd be really cool if you made two. One that tried to maintain, as much as possible, it's usefulness as a backpack and one where you don't care and just build it as a portable antenna.

The phrase “emergency antenna” makes me visualise a wire coathanger…

I thought about that and I have build a quarter wave from a coat hanger. But in the modern hotel room I thought lamp cord would be better.
