Love how this movie focuses on a black American family without having to go through the gang or drug life plot. It focuses on a real relationship between a father and son, and how it affects the other child. My fav movie ever.
@ImAMarinesMom I’d rather have a raw film than a happy dandy film. This film is real. People go through things like. Drugs are real. Partying is real. Domestic violence is real. Family is real. The movie isn’t saying react to your problems with this. The movie shows the raw truth of being pushed to your limit. It shows the struggle of family. My older brother went to jail himself and I couldn’t make myself go and see him because I held so much anger yet guilt about how our relationship could have affected his choices. The sister found someone to confide in besides her brother since he wasn’t there anymore. Not everything has a great outcome. The father pushing his son is something many people go through. He disguised the stress with it him being “a loving father”. You didn’t take time to analyze the film enough to see the deeper meaning behind it.
@ImAMarinesMom To each their own, but don't envy what you can't see or are mentally unable to grasp. You should probably stick to mainstream movies because arthouse films are definitely NOT for the majority.

I just watched this in theatres yesterday and BAWLED MY EYES OUT, to the point a theatre worker came up to check on me when the credits rolled in. What I love is how this movie isn't emotionally manipulative but is so real, complex and fully fleshed out. It is beautiful and it broke my heart. I will still think back to this movie and start crying!!
Me too!!! Mainly because of the brother and sister relationship. I imagined my brother and I in that situation and I couldn’t imagine that happening and us no longer being able to see each other everyday, call each other, etc. idk it just hit home
@@deliadee8846 She was a traumatized child. When you love someone, it is possible to feel as though you "hate" them, but really you hate the actions and factors involved which led to them being taken away from you. 2 months ago my brother had a covid scare, and my initial reaction was hysterical and focus on the anger and lack of forgiveness that I would feel if he died and had done irresponsible things, like partying with large groups, and the consequence was losing him. It is normal
@ImAMarinesMom I see what you're saying, but the movie wasn't all depression and hopelessness or bad morales. I actually think it promotes a LOT of hope in face of tragedy & strife, and also has good moral themes. Here are a few examples: - choices young people make have consequences. A lot of times, young people think they're invincible and won't get caught or won't have to face consequences. You can see that in the drugs & alcohol and driving under the influence. When Tyler had sex with his girlfriend, he didn't think about the possibility of her wanting to keep a baby. When he hit his girlfriend, he wasn't trying to kill her; he didn't think about the consequences. I think this movie shows how no matter what age you are, your choices have an impact that can be absolutely damaging and irreversible. - our judgemental society. Honestly, if I read the news and saw what Tyler did, I'd write him off just like all the other people did on social media in the movie. But actually, Tyler had so much potential... he's talented, smart, at times selfish and immature but also kind and fun. I'm not at all excusing what he did, but he's a kid who needed more healthy guidance - he's not a malicious, cold-blooded murderer. - family love is intricate and complex. Not only do the main characters show this, the daughter's boyfriend and his forgiveness with his father show this. - our mistakes teach us so much. Like the father was so gentle with his daughter in the latter half of the movie. When he asked her how she's doing and added "it's okay to not be okay", that showed his character development and how he realized his perfectionistic tendencies & way of showing love was suffocating. - the end when Tyler prays alone at the cafeteria. I sobbed so hard. To me, it was a scene of humility and redemption and hope. Anyway, there's many more, but I think it portrayed family relationships, imperfect love, forgiveness and redemption really well.
Both equal to me, Taylor Russell is phenomenal, her relationship with lucas’s character felt genuine and fit in perfect with the first half, and the scene between her and her father was heartbreaking

@ImAMarinesMom Waves is a masterpiece of human emotion. It's a self expression of Trey Edward Shults' life and his experiences within his own youth, told through an artful piece. The Drugs, Sex, Partying, Hitting your Pregnant girlfriend are literally played out by someone who's reached their limit, and are clearly depicted in a negative light. He in no way is meant to inspire youth. The "message" (if there even is meant to be one) is that you shouldn't pressure your kids into growing into this perfect mould that you created for them, otherwise they become a monster. And it's strange that you don't pick up on this because you literally mention it in your copy and paste condescending reply to everyone who praised this film. I pray for the older generation that cannot fathom the concept of pouring one's emotions out through film and ultimately critiquing it because it lacks a self fulfilling "message." Not everyone has a happy ending, that's just how it is. Waves is not meant to make you feel happy, idk why on earth you'd critique it for being "just depression". Btw, this isn't a kid's movie. Maybe take your kids to watch Cars where narcissism gets you everywhere you want in life, or Frozen which is a perfect textbook example of isolation and parents not understanding the values of being honest to their young kids. Seriously, get off your high horse.

Just caught a screening of this masterpiece at the Telluride film festival and was completely blown away. The cinematography, performances from literally everyone, and soundtrack all work together to make this a completely unforgettable film. Waves is easily the best movie I’ve seen this year.
t d I have yet to see Krisha, but I’m a huge fan of it comes at night. The two are very very different as you can imagine, but from a cinematic standpoint, and just overall narrative wise, I would say Waves is a far greater film. I was completely immersed and emotionally invested in the theater more so than anything else I’ve seen in a very long time.
It's called waves 'cause the feels hit you in literal waves. Like, literal tsunamis every couple of minutes. So well directed and acted; truly a gem of our lifetime.
my favorite movie of the year. just saw it in Chicago. this trailer gives no spoilers at all, which I love, but it definitely is not preparing you for how intense it is. best way to see it is to go in blind.
I just watched this, it was INCREDIBLE. Taylor’s character was beautifully written. Sterling K. Brown is the most talented actor I’ve ever watched on screen. The cinematography was everything. My new favorite movie.
Saw Waves last night and can confirm that this movie will tear your heart out, particularly in the back half of the movie - one of the best movies of the year imo
Coming back here to say, this was the best film of 2019. So hard to watch, about Black people and for black people. it lives inside you, I cried 8 times in this movie. this was damn great
This is undoubtably my favorite movie of all time. It captures raw teenage emotion more accurately than any movie I have ever seen. So emotionally potent, and real, yet distorted and beautiful. Every shot of this movie is gorgeous and every sound is breathtaking in a perfectly maximalist way. This style wouldn't work for most films but given the complex tone it somehow pulls it off. An absolute masterpiece in every way. Truly a shame it has not received the credit it deserves.
The second half of the movie felt like the life Tyler could have had. Especially with all the parallelism in the scenes with Alexis and Tyler vs Luke and Emily (the many car scenes and the beach/water). And i think when Emily realized that just like Luke's Dad, Tyler had acted out of pain and hurt she was able to forgive him and let go of the hatred she held on to both him and herself for what happened. I think that was what the ending scene was supposed to symbolise with her riding her bike, wind in her hair and arms flailing (the other scenes where she rode her bike feel more mechanical, like she's cycling as hard as she can to get rid of her pain just like Tyler was doing when he would keep pushing himself with the weights). I would have liked to see an extra scene in the end where Emily goes to visit Tyler in prison and the reconciliation between them tho, i think it would have tied the whole movie together. But honestly loved the movie and genuinely think the cinematography was a masterpiece.
Didn't expect to like the film as much as I did. Looking back, this trailer does a reaaaaally (really!) nice job at hiding certain aspects of the movie, while still emphasizing the main emotional message.
I love how the trailer is so emotionally moving and still doesn’t even come CLOSE to preparing you for what a emotional experience this movie is. Without saying ANYTHING about the plot, it’s emotional in an incredibly real and grounded way and you feel like you know these people. I would highly recommend going into this film as blind as possible.
Honestly this is probably one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It really touched me and I usually don’t get that feeling with a lot of movies. I didn’t think the sister was such a big part of the storyline. I really liked how she was able to be happy and find love after what had happend
@ImAMarinesMom damn brotha. This is how life is for a lot of people. The movie isn’t supposed to be happy and it wasn’t made for “kids”. It’s rated R and was not commercially advertised whatsoever. If you can’t handle that I’m sure Disney or the hallmark channel will welcome you with open arms. And skip all that government shit man it ain’t that deep.
A24: "Here's our next movie." Me: "I'm interested." A24: "You don't even know what it is yet." Me: "You're distributing it, so that's how I know it's going to be good."
I saw this movie at Telluride. I can say with about 99% certainty that I will not see a better movie this year. This movie made its way into my body through my ears and through my eyes, and won't be leaving for a very long time.
I feel emotionally attached to this movie. I related to it in so many ways. It gave me intense anxiety and I haven’t cried this much over a movie in a very long time. I felt for all the characters and saw different perspectives that pulled at my heart. Wow. Such a good movie.
The most heartbreaking, emotional and amazing thing about a family that you will see. Trey Edward Shults modernizes Waves in an unforgettable way, as well as the great performances, the surprises that it gives and will leave more than one fascinated with this guaranteed trip, which will be a satisfying experience.
Had the privilege of watching this at the 2019 Mill Valley Film Festival. This film is a MUST WATCH and I couldn't agree more with the reviews quoted in the trailer. Moreover, the cast and crew I met were just dope people and I loved their energy. Hope WAVES makes it to the Oscars!
I remember seeing this in a dark empty theatre on a Monday night and being moved to near tears. Some of the best cinematography I think I’ve ever seen. The soundtrack fits the films narrative perfectly. This film was an experience to say the least! Again.. I had 0 expectations 🥺
Thank god we have companies like yourself, in a world where cinema is either streamed or a super hero film it’s nice to see original content in modern day that reminds me why I want to make movies.
Do yourself a favor and go watch this film if it’s in your city. This trailer is dripping with beauty but it doesn’t even touch what the entire movie has to offer.
ImAMarinesMom the fact that you felt this strongly towards the movie means it did its job. Please keep in mind that of course a film like this is not advocating for/glorifying all of the things you stated, it’s to put a mirror up against what is truly prevalent in our current day society. It’s up to you to draw the pertinent themes in what you see in film, and what this film did was give a voice for so many who may see themselves in what’s presented.
ImAMarinesMom how is this used against children? Honestly. It’s a rated-R film, children shouldn’t even be watching it. And you’re the one who responded to my comment, YOU can go away.
The soundtrack, the story, the characters and the feeling and lessons this movie gives are just amazing one of the greatest movie i've ever watched in my opinion
After you watch the movie, the trailer makes more sense. It’s not trying to reveal the plot, it’s trying to make you feel the movies ESSENCE (lol) so that you’ll wanna watch it, and did a good job of that. Watching it now is like a montage of everything that happened, and it’s heartbreaking but also a well executed testament to how we remember but move on and learn to let go and forgive.
Holy shit. This might be the trailer of the year. I cried and I have ZERO idea what this movie is about. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go listen to Blonde 1000x more times.
A24 dramas always have me bawling my eyes out. Moonlight was so beautiful. The Whale shattered me. And Waves…well I think you know how I felt after this roller coaster.
People who don’t like the second half of this film, don’t like this film. It would not be Waves without Emily’s continuation of the story. It’s perfect
is a wonderful, moving film about human emotion waves (literally, waves are key symbols in the film) and how they affect others. I cried a couple of times in it. Is a Florida Home Produced film so I supported it too for that reason as well. A 24 is really good delivering these little gems in a sea of crap in the theaters.
I was lucky enough to go see an early access showing with Trey Edward Shults and Kelvin Harrison, Jr. doing a Q&A afterwards. Absolutely genuine people. Their love for filmmaking really shines through in this film.
The trailer tells you nothing about the movie but a simple glimpse it is beautifully filmed and the sound track is impeccable all the actors in it are great. It is a movie that sent my anxiety to the roof and then lowered it kissed me on the forehead and hugged me. If I could describe it.
I loved the scene in elevator second part where his sister makes the decision for love. Very powerful. Would see the whole movie again. Masterfully done, worth seeing, a gift. 😊😀😊

𝓛𝓸𝓼𝓽 𝓲𝓷 𝓗𝓮𝓪𝓿𝓮𝓷, Khalid, SZA, Kendrick Lamar, Tame Impala, Frank Ocean just to name a few. The soundtrack is stacked and works so well.
Thank you 😊
Anyone going to mention Alexa, the girl who played Maddy in Euphoria?!
Marco Makes she’s also in mid 90s so we’re pretty much used to seeing her in an a24 production
@@zooleykuh oooh ill have to see that!
She also played the child prodigy in Escape Room
Check out her music too, watch the video PEARL- TURNIN TRICKS. That's her!
overrated garbage
It's called waves 'cause the feels hit you in literal waves. Like, literal tsunamis every couple of minutes. So well directed and acted; truly a gem of our lifetime.
@ImAMarinesMom because it was realistic.
it also refers to the young man afro hairstyle, when he’s blond. The hairdo ´s called waves in the black community.
@@kirn3afekthat boy didnt have waves chile lol
I’d like to formally announce that this is the first time a movie trailer alone made me cry.
Jahdaipie Omg! Same!!! This shit is powerful
the frank ocean effect, first time? haha
Wait till you actually see it. I was flattened...
Literally
damnnnn sameeee
That rearrangement of Godspeed with strings and piano 😍😍😍 Just makes you think how cinematic Blonde is

Jaden Thomas both. it's a major theme of frank's

I was just thinking that lmao
He's in the movie about Shia LeBouf's childhood.
my favorite movie of the year. just saw it in Chicago. this trailer gives no spoilers at all, which I love, but it definitely is not preparing you for how intense it is. best way to see it is to go in blind.
Fr tho I was not prepared it hits you like a train
I just watched this, it was INCREDIBLE. Taylor’s character was beautifully written. Sterling K. Brown is the most talented actor I’ve ever watched on screen. The cinematography was everything. My new favorite movie.
Saw Waves last night and can confirm that this movie will tear your heart out, particularly in the back half of the movie - one of the best movies of the year imo
Sterling K. Brown is one of the most consistent criers and he's really good at crying lol
dafuq
He's also a good actor but 🖐🏽 I agree 😂
Lol the male Viola Davis, he just needs the snot bubble and he's set
Side note though, I really appreciated his range here; I saw him in the trailer and got scared they'd typecast him as the corny dad from this is us
Yes!!!! He transmites so sadness... and suffering
Coming back here to say, this was the best film of 2019. So hard to watch, about Black people and for black people. it lives inside you, I cried 8 times in this movie. this was damn great
i’m watching it on thursday, i’m so hyped man.
Jabbar Lewis bro, it was something serious
This shit was not for black people
It didnt really touch too much on race i felt, what makes you say its a movie for black people ?
Daniel Ryan I think it’s for anyone, but for me, I liked how it wasn’t a stereotypical black family struggle
I haven’t even seen this movie yet and I’m convinced that they couldn’t have picked a better cast
Saw an early access screening, the cast did a fantastic job
Arielle J well you’re wrong! The cast were amazing!!!!
The most beautiful film I’ve ever seen. So many emotions I had while watching it. And the cinematography is just wooooow. I recommend it 10/10
I spent the second half of this movie crying 😭...it’s really beautiful
The last scene in the bedroom really got me😭
James Miley it was heart wrenching
Sooo is Lucas Hedges required to be in 80% of A24 movies or what?
Yeah he's thirsty...doing too much
Dolan Wargin well he is their boyfriend
I'm not complaining
@@Roman888 yikes
He is a in-house guy lol probably got a old school 7 picture deal
This movie has moved me so much, in ways that I just cannot explain. A must watch !!!!!
I swear understand you girl!
The part where she’s riding the bike and then screams, I felt that, gets me every time man. This movie is going to destroy me in the best way possible
Well said
Didn't expect to like the film as much as I did. Looking back, this trailer does a reaaaaally (really!) nice job at hiding certain aspects of the movie, while still emphasizing the main emotional message.
I am a cinephile and this movie is in top 10 for me... super underrated... Shame for you Hollywood
It’s like the first hour is so intense and then I literally cried 45 minutes straight in the next half. Tragic and beautiful, well done.
This looks so good
@ImAMarinesMom damn brotha.
@ImAMarinesMom *mexican or Hispanic*not Spanish and this is how real life is nothing is perfect everyone is gonna make mistakes
A24: "Here's our next movie."
Me: "I'm interested."
A24: "You don't even know what it is yet."
Me: "You're distributing it, so that's how I know it's going to be good."
They are on fire! Gotta love 'em
I saw this movie at Telluride. I can say with about 99% certainty that I will not see a better movie this year. This movie made its way into my body through my ears and through my eyes, and won't be leaving for a very long time.
YES! .... LOL I don't know what's going on with all these comments.. can you please explain? LOL I'm missing something.
you lose yourself while watching this film, the way it's shot, the colors, the acting, the music, it hypnotizes you
I feel emotionally attached to this movie. I related to it in so many ways. It gave me intense anxiety and I haven’t cried this much over a movie in a very long time. I felt for all the characters and saw different perspectives that pulled at my heart. Wow. Such a good movie.
I saw this movie tonight and it was amazing. the acting, the cinematography, soundtrack, everything

The cinematography was horrible. I can't believe how many times they used that 360 circle shot. I mean talk about overusing a gimmick.
The most heartbreaking, emotional and amazing thing about a family that you will see. Trey Edward Shults modernizes Waves in an unforgettable way, as well as the great performances, the surprises that it gives and will leave more than one fascinated with this guaranteed trip, which will be a satisfying experience.
absolutely one of my favorite movies i've seen in years, utterly gorgeous
Ben Ryland seeing it tomorrow :)
yeah bruh, best movie ive seen since 2014
Had the privilege of watching this at the 2019 Mill Valley Film Festival. This film is a MUST WATCH and I couldn't agree more with the reviews quoted in the trailer. Moreover, the cast and crew I met were just dope people and I loved their energy. Hope WAVES makes it to the Oscars!
L
I remember seeing this in a dark empty theatre on a Monday night and being moved to near tears. Some of the best cinematography I think I’ve ever seen. The soundtrack fits the films narrative perfectly. This film was an experience to say the least! Again.. I had 0 expectations 🥺
i have never been so emotional watching a movie. it was the prolonged scenes of silence which really showed the effect of loss. beautiful movie.
A24: I
Me: SEND ME ALL YOU'RE CONTENT DARLING, IM ALWAYS READY!
maeli it’s a film, not “content”
@@jacobmacdonagh4070 I had a meeting with a TV executive at A24 last week, so I'm pretty sure they make content beyond "films." So get over yourself.
A D Yeah but I’m sick of everyone calling films and TV shows content, it’s so corporate and makes it sound so soulless
*your
Thank god we have companies like yourself, in a world where cinema is either streamed or a super hero film it’s nice to see original content in modern day that reminds me why I want to make movies.
And you’re the one who responded to my comment, YOU can go away.
itsjoepro get a life. You’re vouching for a disgusting movie. The movie is based on the parents two children lol idiot 🤦🏿♂️
Anthony Turchiano Lol right. It’s all about teens. These so called top comments probably didn’t even watch it. Just pushing agendas against our kids
Anthony Turchiano again, then why is it rated-R if it’s supposedly for children? Why are you even in my comments? You can leave too.
RayatoTV I was not prepared to witness this shit lmao I feel the same way
One of the most gorgeous, heartbreaking, emotional and incredible movies I've ever seen
Such an amazing movie
This movie was amazing, and it will be totally ignored this awards season.
Visually immaculate and emotionally exhausting!!
Travis Spazz award shows never get it right, and then they try to make up for it the next year
Just saw this movie... this trailer definitely does not prepare you for what this movie is actually about
this is the best trailer I’ve EVER watched
This is honestly one of the most simple yet beautiful trailers I’ve seen in a long time... geez just take my heart AND my money
Waves was extraordinary!! I've seen it twice in NYC and the crowds loved it. Exceptional drama!!!
Seriously!!!
A24 dramas always have me bawling my eyes out. Moonlight was so beautiful. The Whale shattered me. And Waves…well I think you know how I felt after this roller coaster.
This broke my heart for some reason. I had serious emotional reaction to it. And this is just the trailer.
I'm a simple guy:
I see the ad for an A24 movie
I'm going to the movies to watch
Canal do Duke hell yes. A24 is SO GOOD at everything they touch.
Kudos for the Manny Calavera profile pic

Quite possibly the most powerful film I've seen all year.
People who don’t like the second half of this film, don’t like this film. It would not be Waves without Emily’s continuation of the story. It’s perfect
Saw this in a screening on my own and I loved it. The film was total eye candy!
A24 be killing it.
always find myself coming back to this trailer... so beautifully done.
Its amazing coming back and watching this after actually seeing the movie
Saw this at TIFF today.... for the love of God go see it.
Mitch Baxter omgggg I’m so excited
is a wonderful, moving film about human emotion waves (literally, waves are key symbols in the film) and how they affect others. I cried a couple of times in it. Is a Florida Home Produced film so I supported it too for that reason as well. A 24 is really good delivering these little gems in a sea of crap in the theaters.
hands down one of my favorite movies of all time. It's so well thought of and directed, it is truly a masterpiece.
confirmed wavy. where's my frank ocean boy at
Rent a supercar for a day
DJ Mester Odin drive around with your friends smoke a gram of that haze
Just watched this movie and oh my goodness was it peak
Cheers to anyone appreciating this masterpiece in 2024🍻
Trey Edward Shults & A24. I'm sold before I even watch the trailer.
That "I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU" made me cry
I was lucky enough to go see an early access showing with Trey Edward Shults and Kelvin Harrison, Jr. doing a Q&A afterwards. Absolutely genuine people. Their love for filmmaking really shines through in this film.
A24 movies hit hard . All its movies are masterpiece.
Incredible movie: the trailer didn’t do justice. A must watch. Simply incredible.
the trailer is much better then the film
This movie is an underrated masterpiece. Felt so authentic and unique. Don’t miss out
Honestly A24 I've just been hitting your trailers up and I can't think of a single movie I don't want to watch so far. The excellence is unreal.
Can’t even tell what it’s about but that’s the best kinda trailer bc u know the movie is gonna pop off
One of the most heartbreaking film i've watched this year so far. The pain just ache so bad seeing the story unfolds :(
Here in 2024 to rewatch the trailer! This is perfect
haha same!!
Today is my first time watching this movie. It's really a good movie.
It's soo good but soo heavy! They definitely deserved some awards for this film.
The trailer tells you nothing about the movie but a simple glimpse it is beautifully filmed and the sound track is impeccable all the actors in it are great. It is a movie that sent my anxiety to the roof and then lowered it kissed me on the forehead and hugged me. If I could describe it.
Man this trailer does not warn you how dark this movie gets
I loved the scene in elevator second part where his sister makes the decision for love. Very powerful. Would see the whole movie again. Masterfully done, worth seeing, a gift. 😊😀😊
Yes!! Ugh this movie honestly broke me. It was just so damn real
