I own the skimmer in the video. Great to see so many triggers for it and how to deal with them. I've found just raising it up about 2" above the marked water line keeps it from overflowing and it still grabs material.
Hi I am new to this hobby is there a video on how to tackle situations when u the skimmer overflow do you need to switch off the whole tank system ? Or just off the skimmer will do ? Any advice on how to use it?😂
My Octopus 150 was running fine until I decided to clean the sump and the skimmer itself with vinegar and water. Now I can't stop it from overflowing and it's been a week. Wish they would have designed it with an air intake valve to control the "intake" of water but they put the control on the outtake of water.
Is there a specific placement it needs to be for the IM Nuvo Fusion 40 or does it have to do with my water? I don't medicate my water and run Chemi Pure Blue Carbon but it's overflowing badly with the cup at its highest.
I recently purchased the HOB Aquamaxx 1.5 Skimmer and that thing is shooting bubbles through the skimmer cap and filling up with saltwater. I had it running 2 days and I took it down because of this. If the skimmer wasn't hanging outside my IM Nuvo Fusion 40 I would've left it in there but that thing is pouring bubbles out something crazy.
i have fluval skimmer ps2 and somehow its overflowing from all sides, even from the way it come out the water. i mean not even where is the lead or anything but from where water comes out.... i looked everywhere to find something similar but never found something like this ..... tomorrow i will do full clean of the skimmer and see if it help... but i doubt it
I am sorry to hear that. It may be a change in water chemistry. If you do a deep clean on the skimmer and doublecheck the pump, I would run the unit without a collection cup for a couple of days.
I saw you puut carbon in sock. I have been doing that because I dont have much flow in sump so I guess its okay if I clean it with tank water? One thing I notice is that the flow coming out is reduced even more. I just hooked up a skimmer and have nevr used one. I now notice I have no flow in my sump, basically just stagnate water and a film on top, maybe a little bublly type film thatI have been sucking out with turkey baster. is that normal or should I not suck it out. Can I put a very small pimp or a nano wavemaker in sump. the skimmer is very bug for my small sump and takes up a lot of room. It is prodcing brown foam so thats good. hasnt lowered nitrates but only had it on for about 5 days. I may be noticing the lack of flow and film because I sat a light down there to keep a better eye on skimmer, not really sure. I dont have a
HELP!! Been using purified tap water all this while. Switched to RO/DI to top off water loss due to evaporation and my skimmer overflows badly. No choice but to off the skimmer for now. Any suggestions? Or should i not use ro/di water?? Help needed!
RO/DI is definitely the way to go. Using RO/DI instead of tap water should have no impact on your skimmer, so the culprit is likely something else. have you made any other changes to your tank recently? New additives, medications, or foods?
As weird as it sounds, theres no other additives, chemicals or new food added. Straight after topping off the water, went to dismantle my ro/di unit, came back to the tank, BAMM overflow.

@@victortoscano7721 the easiest thing to do is add a small air line control valve to the yellow air intake hose. Start by almost closing it off and watch the overflow slow down. Don’t close it completely off because the internal water level will rise and exit the cut out for the intake tube.
I have a vertex 200i skimmer and it is not immune to a overflow. I have had 10 plus overflows and 2 floods. And I thought I could get away without a overflow with this expensive skimmer.

I've installed a protein skimmer in my 150 gallon frash water aquarium but my skimmer is not producing foam. Skimmer doesn't work in fresh water aquarium??
Skimmers will work in freshwater aquariums. If the skimmer is not creating a lot of skimmate, it may just need some time to get broken in. It also may show that your bioload may not be very heavy.
Skimmers don’t work well in freshwater in my opinion. Though I did use a surface skimmer in a freshwater tank to eliminate oily residue on top of the water and I had pretty good results.
Thats not a hard core overflow. I have a huge skimmer that overflows so strongly that it lifts the lid up and the water coming out of the little holes on the top spray the underside of my tank like holding your thumb over a garden hose. Only fixes i can think of is 1. Skim with top off, if it overflows no spray it will just flow in to subtank. 2. Drill larger holes in Top this would reduce pressure so it wont spray. 3. Drill large hole (without breaking its a 1,000 skimmer) and put a drain line in. It only does this when you are not around to see it. I don't care that it does now and then just dont like the spraying mess.
Also Vinegar or sugar (never use sugar in reef or low flow tank!!!!!) but not like filter sock. filter sock makes skimmer go crazy. minimize the skimmer flow or power before you mess with filter sock or bio media

Never had this issue luckily. The best gas exchange source is from the aquarium return at the surface of the aquarium water level.

Wash in white vinegar and water before adding any new skimmer, pump or filter. Mfg oils cause “ break in” overflow as well as stress coat additives.

GAC Carbon works great in a reactor to remove Chemiclean treatment.

When I add fresh RO water to my sump due to evaporation loss my skimmer will overflow if I add the fresh water too fast.

I add a ball valve on the intake pipe of my hob skimmer. It affords me extra control and stops "break in overflow*.

Yes. Add a ball valve to the intake tube and then you can adjust the unit.

yes, I would wait until your aquarium is fully cycled before adding a protein skimmer.

The bacteria that is coming off the bio pellets gets sucked up into the skimmer.

you say new filter socks cause the skimmer to over flow? my used cleaned filter socks does the same. why?
Could have something to do with the amount of nutrients in a dirty sock vs. a new or clean used sock.
