"Drift" is one of those songs where it feels like the composer is actively daring the audience to outdo him, knowing 99% of the audience couldn't even if they wanted to.
"Hi, I'm Daisuke Ishiwatari. I made a song where every component part is not only a different time signature, but also an entirely different genre. Beat that, if you can."
One thing I feel like doesn't get enough praise is just the name. "Drift" perfectly encapsulates everything about this song. Drifting from one signature to another. Drifting between the highs and lows of life. Being set adrift on the sea of knowledge that Happy Chaos consumed... god it's so cool. Drift will always be my favourite GG song.

This song IS exactly what Happy Chaos is. He's a guy who takes life as it comes and does everything with as little effort as he can to make it exciting. He's one of those characters who is basically "he's the bad guy but he's not a bad guy", as the song puts it he lives for that calm that comes after the storm. He brought magic to the world of Guilty Gear which did illuminate the world at a very dark time where they thought the end was coming, but that magic also opened up the possibility for these "gears" to be created which are essentially near indestructable monsters which nearly brought an end to humanity; however, as a result humanity prospered greater than ever before to where they could surpass even a god. He is a man who can bend reality to his will and yet is very patient, playful and just sometimes wants to chill and go for a car ride.
I should add a little fun fact about him, but he was born in Ireland.

late to the party but one thing that can be important to remember he's also to blame for said dark time, maybe not intentionally, as the very first lyric goes, he spent over 10 years finding eternal happiness for humans, and when he found out that it is impossible to achieve and that that pursuit only leads to misery he ditched it all in 2 seconds and that's about it, now without a real purpose while being at the point of omnipotence he does whatever for the next best thing

Not sure if you’ve gotten told this before, but a good 95% of vocal Guilty Gear songs from Xrd onwards are all sung by Naoki Hashimoto, who proves his insane range with just these two games. The only other singer was AISHA who they just brought on for Strive.
They did get Jamison Boaz as the backup vocalist to Aisha for Love the Subhuman Self.
Naoki's also the vocalist of an old Japanese metal band named Outrage
Drift has three sections - Pre Disney - No idea what Chaos is on about, but its definitely intense and... something.
Disney - Chaos finally explains his worldview as dramatically and extravagantly as possible.
Post - Disney - All the disparate parts come together and suddenly make sense, because you can see things how he is seeing them.

I find it funny that you talked about random life events, because the whole schtick with this character is that he learned the "truth" about everything, so he just does things for the drama. For example, he uses a gun in the game because his magic would make things too easy. An interesting take on the "enlightened" archtype, instead of being nihlistic or whatnot, he just ended up finding things amusing.
His whole story can be summed up in the starting quote in his song. "It took me 10 years to find the answer to something... I forgot.... about it in two seconds..... Thats about it!"
(shout out to the another song quote, "I dont have anything thats really important to me, that why, everything is beautiful.")
he also can teleport but instead drives a car to give dramatic exposition.
To add to this, Happy Chaos isn't the villain of the story for any evil reasons, he just knows that a good story needs a good antagonist
@Mach He's more of a chaotic neutral Joker. He just does what entertains him without a regard for whether it's good or evil
@Mach it gets interesting with how his arcade ending as well as his intros hinting that he may actually play as the protagonist (or at least a good guy) in the future stories

Happy Chaos wouldn’t care. He would be amused at the outcome and say that it was great drama.
Theres a saying that “a rolling stone gathers no moss” or basically if you keep something moving, it can’t grow old and dusty.
Happy Chaos wants to be the thing that makes the rock move whenever it’s sitting still. That’s his entire motivation. Make things happens in order to write a good story.

Drift is the biggest musical flex Daisuke has made, and could very well be one of the strongest flexes of musical talent of all time.

oh, for context Happy Chaos is basically a guy that learned the universe works by reverse causality (in his words, what came first was the omelette, then the chicken and the egg) and is also the most powerful mage ever.
so he basically just stirrs shit up so the world stays cool. "humanity gained the power to do everything and lost the ability to do anything" and stuff.

Good to see you react to this one. Easily my second favorite GGST track, only recently surpassed by Baiken's theme. The way both the instrumentation and the lyrics perfectly encapsulate the character and tell his story, and the pure elation of that "Disney" section just makes it so much fun to listen to.

absolutely love this track (and happy chaos), and I love how to musicians his theme perfectly describes his chaos, the name happy chaos, the song is chaotic and has a great amount of energy. The name as well being "Drift" the song itself drifting through all sorts of genre's, themes, and time signatures.
"What the yee-haw is happenening right now?" Pretty much how most GG Strive songs made me feel on first listen. Every track on this OST takes you on a journey. This one in particular sounds pretty chaotic, much like the character lol.

I know this video is several months old at this point and you’ve covered a lot more Guilty Gear since, but I think this song really conveys Daisuke’s love of Queen as a band.
I also love how the song pertains to the character it’s about.
Happy Chaos is basically the Joker except, instead of wanting to watch the world burn, he wants to create chaos so the heroes will win and he’ll have witnessed a new story.
I think it’s best explained by the song:
“When a violent storm is over
The blue sky is more beautiful than ever
You see? I want that, I want that
That's all I want”
He creates the violent storm hoping to see the blue sky after it passes.
Something that makes Guilty gear strive so special, is the creator is an absolute control freak with the most terrifying attention to detail that I have never seen from any other creator, and it completely pays off

This song bounced off me when I first heard it, now it's my favorite song in the entire OST. Daisuke's music always seems to seep into your brain and you end up loving everything he makes and I cannot explain why.
Daisuke: "So, I'm making the Happy Chaos theme right now.'
Fans: "So, what genre will it be? And what will it be about? He is such a important character, he is basically enlightened and all-knowing, will it show how he really feels?"
Daisuke: "Who needs a genre? Also, yes, but it's basically obvious."

I love seeing him brought to tears of confusion with Guilty Gear Strive's unorthodox musical masterpieces.
Daisuke Ishiwatari really made something incredible with this soundtrack and i love how unique and thematic they are, it's really a sign of what creative freedom can become.

I mean... this is a theme song for a character named Happy Chaos, so it's honestly very fitting.
I've noticed some of the strive music likes to swap genre out of nowhere songs like "let me carve your way" and "necessary discrepancy" i think "Drift" is one of the best example.

@Jesse's Auditorium Yeah, I was kind of surprised you didn't catch on to that since Queen's music isn't exactly unknown to many in the world of music. If I would describe the song in a single phrase it would be what I thought half way through the song while watching this video, "This is what it would sound like if Queen went Metal"

Just came across your channel tonight and subscribed almost immediately. Great stuff. I know you've done more GG since this one but one thing I haven't seen come up is this awesome bit of musical quotation that happens in the Strive soundtrack where Ky's old theme "Holy Orders (Be Just Or Be Dead)", which is badass on its own, shows up in the Strive themes for both Ky and Sin (Ky's son). Their Strive themes are really different from each other but I think it's cool how Daisuke carried part of Holy Orders into Sin's theme "The Hourglass" to musically reinforce a genetic connection. I don't know how you feel about doing a deep dive where you compare three songs like that, but it's a level of intricate detail that you can only get when the creator of the game is also the composer of the OST.
FYI my kid got me listening to the Strive OST for like a year before I finally bought the game. It's a solid game that is honestly too technical for me to get into seriously, but the OST is 100% bangers so it sucked me in. The lore is complicated and insane and it helps to know that every character theme in Strive is not just a portrait of who they are, it's a musical production of who they were and who they become by the end of Strive's story. Daisuke is an absolute mad genius and I'm loving watching you really internalize that truth over the course of these videos.

I actually hadn't heard this, I love GG but haven't had time for Strive. This was definitely chaos, but I liked it. Might have to give ethe OST a whirl.

This song is so fucking wild conceptually. I have no way to confirm this but Drive really makes me think Daisuke may have gotten into Mr. Bungle at some point in the last few years, its the only thing I can even remotely compare this to and it sticks out SO much from the rest of the OST.

In strive the world is so close to world peace with the greatest fighters protecting it a force of Chaos had to do a couple pokes.

Guilty Gear is like a Queen album at their peak, it goes through a lot of genres... and you get a nifty anime and videogame starting with Xrd/Revelator/Rev2 and StrIVe
daisuke is also a huge Queen fan, Sol is both his self insert and a Queen reference
Necessary Discrepancy is another track with inconsistent time signatures. It's currently tied with Let Me Carve Your Way as my favorite track in Strive. The two songs were rather controversial, let's just say the songs make some interesting choices in vocals and overall structure (see: inconsistent time signatures)

I hope someone requests some of the slower, more vocally focused songs from GG like Freesia or Lily, even though it’s probably not as exciting but they’re so emotional and impactful even though a lot of the English is hard to understand because of the accent, the emotion behind the sound of the vocals still carry through.
