- This is a video review of one of my favorite games I have ever played. Even as a adventure game fan with 1000's of titles this is near the top of the best of all time list. This review is more for people that love adventure games and I have tried to inject some of my thoughts on the game rather than just listing what the game is about and how the interface works.
As this is my first ever attempt I do expect them to get better... assuming anyone watches them :)
Have fun and happy adventuring!!
This is my first video review for my TH-cam channel AdventureReviews. Check back for more reviews to come as well as other presentations on the Adventure Game scene!
Great review! I play pc games since 1993, and I can tell you this... The latest games do not force players to think. You just need a gun and shoot bullets! That's all! Gabriel Knight is definitely an adult game. But going back to 1993 I was a teenager 14 years old) and GK were stunning for the time, (new tech about graphics and sound) so me and my brother tried to solve these complex puzzles. Sorry about my bad english... Greetins from Brazil.
This was my favourite in the series... I wish they had continued with this format... the classical format you know... Honestly have yet to play a game as good as this again... Great story, great graphic...good voice acting... it was very creepy...
Best Game in the Adventure History!!! Really good Review. Thank you. You got a really relaxing voice:)
i went back ten years just to find this game and its one of the best story lines and game play's i have ever come across. and the enchanting love between a white and black woman is just truly awesome and unique.
the funny thing is, the character portraits are better than the "remake"...
I never knew there was voice acting in this game, i played through it without it. I'm so glad that i did, it's harder to take some of these characters seriously with the voice overs, and gabriel & some others sound nothing like how i'd envisioned them, he sounds much less sofisticated that i'd imagined. And god, that narrator!
wow that Sierra beginning takes me back...
well put. I gripe i hear about this game is how dialogue and info heavy it is. I never noticed...it was such a compelling storyline. I yearned for more character info and more history as i played along, because it all added to the complexity and tone of the plot and game. So eerie and addicting. It is easily one of my favourite adventure games, and my favourite GK game (which i've come to find, is an unpopular opinion).
@Watchman2012 it is all good bro... you didn't need to remove it.... thanks though and I am glad you liked the review!!!
Excellent review! I normally avoid adventure games, but I might just give a try. Thanks for posting this review.
GK3 for me was my first and my favorite (it's great fun positioning the camera, feeling like a director) but I love all 3. Personally I like that each edition revamps the technology and game engine to explore the world a different way, though that may have been more to do with Sierra policy then the designer's decision. I guess we'll know for sure if Pinkerton Road Studios goes off as well as we hope, then she has a chance at GK4 and beyond!
man thank you soooooo much for doing all these amazing reviews. its much appreciated:)
My first 16-bit adventure game!
I will defiantly be doing Conquest of Longbow.. as in very soon.
Nice review! :) This game is one of my All Time favorite games :)
My first time hearing about this game, but for 1993 it seems like this was revolutionary.
Cool review. I have played GK1 so many times and now I want to play it again:)
Very good review, and I agree with many of the points you made about the game. Although if I may point out two very minor errors, your pronunciation of "inventory" is incorrect (even for us Aussies), although I can't articulate the correct pronunciation through text alone, and you said (and even the video title has it) "Father" when in fact it's "Fathers". Minor and kinda unimportant points, but nonetheless I couldn't help but point 'em out.
But as I said, great review, well done!
Finished this last week. Was too difficult too complete when I was a kid, and still extremely difficult today. I'll admit I had to resort to a walkthrough more than once. But definitely a memorable game! Tim Curry is amazing. Like the reviewer I found Gabriel Knight a fantastic character and the voice acting just enhances that tenfold. Can't wait to play GK2 and 3!!!
Oh wow, I'm so glad I found this channel.
Fantastic review, hope you also do GK2 and 3.
@HardWarUK where did you get the xp installer i have tried and so far have found nothing that works for me.
@1300l I have that game and I love it.. I have not really had time to do any of these videos for a while but expect something soon.
A lot of people put down GK3, but I think it was pretty darn good. Sure, I rate it least among the three GK games, but that's only because I love the other two so much; though GK3 is still a great game and an absolute classic adventure game.
@acuna13 GK is one of those games that people should have on their bucket list. To me, the game's graphics holds up very well because it's unique. The animations are much better than most of the 3D adventures nowadays. They are pixelated, but since I grew up with this type of the graphics, they are normal to me.
Loved the review. I am an old adventuregamer, but this game was one of those I never got around to play. After seeing this review I am looking so forward to playing it :) This eastern? Anyway, thanks!
Best adventure game ever. I still want GK4!
Gabriel Knight, especially Sins of the Father, is the best adventure game I have ever played. The Beast Within was great, but I just digged Tim Curry doing Gabriel so much (I didn't like the job he did in part 3, however). Everything about this game was absolutely astounishing. The writing and the story is some of the best I have every seen in a game, period.
There is a tutorial where I go though all my standard dosbox settings with work with like 98% of all the retro games I play. Basically I have it set to HQ3 filter, and window resolution to 1280x720 (720p) while full screen is original res. Also some videos I use a Lanczos scale in my video edit app to simply scale the image.
@HardWarUK you are a LIVE saver! XD thank you so much! and i found the patch for gk2 as well! double eee moment there. Now I just need to find a patch for my lost in time rpg game as well and I would be in heaven lol.
Even though we have nearly all the classic oldskooI games on Amiga/Atari etc, I never had the chance to play this as a kid, but last week I bought it on GOG, after hearing nothing but good things about it, and I can say for sure (having played a LOT of point n click adventures), that this is one of my favourites for sure. There is ONE problem though, it seems like theres no music in the game, apart from the main menu! Is it supposed to be like that? For example, the bands in the park are silent.
Mark Hamil and Tim Curry did an amazing job in this game. Personally, this is probably my favorite adventure game of all time. In my opinion, better than GK 2 - another of my favorites.
I managed to fix it after some detective work by reassigning the drivers in the INI file! Now I have music!
Which software you used for recording the game?
Yea.. there is this thing called the "GK2K project" that made Xp installers for GK1-3 but the prob is that the XP installers do not seam to work on vista+ OS's so unless yo have a XP virtualization running dosbox is still your bets bet for many people.
Please try and keep spoilers off the comments. TH-cam dose not let you edit comments so unless I del the entire post I can not get rid of these spoilers.
GK is one of the best ever 4 a reason :)
Finding a object and then having to examine it to find more detail went out of style in most games for this very problem. Most games now have the object reveal the examination clue in the text / voice over on pick up. It is really a left over device from the text adventure days imo
I miss you
It's possible we may get one, look up Jensen's new Pinkerton Road Studios
@AdventureReviews Nice!!! Ill be waiting!!! ;)
Um.. I mean I did a tutorial on playing retro games on modern computers... it is in my channel video list if you want to see it... the 1st part is the one that covers dosbox
The Dialogue is really long, and so is the thickly accented slow narrator, but honestly, most of the time I never noticed. I was so involved in the story that I craved all the little details I could find about the characters and learning about real, well researched, cultures. There's not many better adventure games then this, or more evenly balanced ones. It was challenging, but never so that it halted or made me grab a walk-through. All those icons take a bit of getting used to though.
I wish they would bring this to iOS or other modern platforms.
My apologies... I removed the comment. None the less thanks for reviewing a great game.
Now we just need a GK4 to go full circle :(
excellent work!
thank you :)
Wait...Tim Curry played Pennywise!? My world just exploded (again)!
@gardini100 hah! Yea.. I am glad DosBox emulates dos so well.. but man.. I am also glad it isn't a true virtulisation.. I would hate to have to much about with boot disks and autoexec.bat and all that stuff again
nice review, thanks! :D
The main character is Conan O'Brien?
Discovered this gem last year and got totally sucked into it, absolutely love the atmosphere and story. Luckily despite being a sierra game you can't die too often.
Why oh why did they have to utilize this awful FMV in the follow ups :(
If only GK 2 and 3 would have these graphics instead
Yea goggle "sierrahelp" and you should find a webpage called Sierra Help that has all the patches, official + fan made for all teh sierra games. This site should be your first stop b4 trying to run any classic sierra game.. next stop is to see if scumVM supports it... then dosbox.
best game ever man, no shit
No, this game's got a very large range of musical scores between numerous scenes - so yes, there's something wrong with your game.
