So these elf boys walk into a tavern with half their dead dad's body, tell a woman that she wasted her life, making her want to burn her business to the ground, and then dip out.
True story: My mother took my brother and me to see this film. We were too old for it, but it was the one year anniversary of my dad dying and we just needed to get out of the house. We went to the theater and just picked this as a safe movie without knowing the plot
Gonna be real for a second here. This movie is what finally gave me the confidence to pass my driver's test. It was the line: "You'll never be ready! Merge!" that got me to take that last leap.
Fun fact: While in the middle of the pandemic and during online classes one of my teachers decided to play this movie but i want able to properly see it because everyone was having an among us roleplay in the chat. Just something funny i thought id share.
I didn't care to see it in theaters thanks to it being uploaded on Disney+. The last film before shutdown, that I saw, was 'Sonic the Hedgehog' (2020).
I can’t even think about this movie without crying. I know it’s not great but it reminds me so much of my own life without a father figure, where the only good male role model in my life was my brother
Yeah, it really hit my friend watching with me who had an absent father. Kind of reminds me of Brave where, it's not a perfect movie, but if you've been through it you get it. It feels nice to be seen.
A couple of emotional scenes I really like in this movie- the scene when Ian is realizing his brother Barley took care of him all along and I loved the subverted expectations of the ending of having Barley see his dad again instead of Ian.
Idc what anyone says rhis movie had somethin. The ending was really unexpected and wholesome and earned. And HOW is chris pratt doing a better job than tom holland in this movie? People say jack black would have been better and while i agree, chris pratt did way better here than mario by a mile.
i agree 100%, i felt they set up everything really well for the ending were the jokes and some stuff not relatable for most and maybe mid and bit corny? yes. but did i enjoy the entire movie? yes i did i feel oversaturated with romance sometimes and i rlly loved how this focused on the siblings
@__Black_Sheep__ I personally like the incredibles the most as it has just as nuanced and adult themes maybe moreover but still is very creative, entertaining, and well performed. But I SO get the attraction with the world itself as its never really been done before in anything I can think of, and adding a mature story on top can hook you pretty well, and while I don't think I'll visit it again and don't feel the same way, I can see the appeal, and have felt it in even other pixar movies.
i remember seeing this movie with my dad and he just complained that they spent this whole movie for this kid to see his dad, and he didnt even get to see him, plus they couldve WAITED FOR THE LEGS TO DISAPPEAR AND JUST USE THE 2ND GEM
I remember there being a Simpsons short that played before this movie in theaters. Like, Pixar actually had the guts to show a short from the Simpsons instead of a short they made themselves. Disney really took advantage of buying FOX.
Aside from the Burrow short for Soul, I'm pretty sure that was the last Pixar short film for a movie. Disney must be breathing down Pixar's neck or something
I avoided this movie like the PLAGUE because my dad had just passed away a few months prior in a very traumatizing way. Took me almost 2 years to finally watch it, and when I did it became my comfort movie. I know it has its faults, but it helps me feel a little bit more okay with everything that happened
I'm surprised they didn't point out how this Chris Pratt character also ran out of a hospital while their parent was dying as part of his trauma. Just like the Marvel Chris Pratt did.
I loved this movie. I had lost my mom not long before watching it though so maybe it was that bias. But I think one of the most hated parts of the movie, an awesome fantasy world of might and magic reduced to a plain real-world urban existence, was a genius decision. It parallels the feeling you have after losing a loved one. The life before the death is fondly remembered, even magical, but the life you have to deal with afterwards is a hollow echo of what was. I felt it was a nice subtle way of making the audience feel that emptiness of knowing magic existed but right now is so hard to find amidst the real-world normalcy given at the start of the movie. But maybe that's just me.
I think you definitely put it best: the emotional moments and overall theme is a very engaging one, but everything in between at best is okay or just mid
If I had a nickel for every time Chris Pratt starred in a wholesome animated movie that celebrated brotherhood, I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's nice that it happened twice.
i think bradly said he never said goodbye to his dad so that’s why ian didn’t go. ian realized while crossing off the list that bradly helped him grow up.

My absolute favourite Pixar movie. So touching and as someone with a older brother who it took a long time to get along with, this movie hurts the soul but also shows that brothers will always be there for you
I think this movie needs a bit more appreciation, but I can imagine that its structure can be a turn-off with how much time they needed to establish the non-magical scenes to contrast with the magical stuff later on and how it plays into their characters. Personally, I'm not sure what I'd cut or redo that wouldn't remove context that makes the general story make sense.
Tom Holland plays Spider-Man, Ian, Walter Beckett, and Backshots Chris Pratt plays Mario, Garfield, Star-Lord, Emment, Rex, Andy Dwyer, and Owen Grady All I see is Chris Pratt and Tom Holland

It's funny you used the Dimension20 clip because this movie gave me strong vibes of their Fantasy High campaign, which also happens to be a fantasy thing taking place in a modern setting
In the real world, there are people who like to take on old fashion aesthetics or keep to older traditions, some people preserve older media formats (people still use vinyl records), and there are groups whose literal purpose is the conservation of old cultures, so if this world is anything like ours then it would actually be likely that there ARE still magic users, who might even show off their knowledge on mass media. These people don't have to be centuries old like the Manticore. They could just be hipsters, rebels, or doomsday preppers who want to ignore the system, or genuine scholars or enthusiasts in ancient magic since getting a college education.
