    On his AFF Level 4 jump, this skydive student pulled his pilot chute to deploy his parachute, but the bridle got caught around his arm which prevented the main parachute from opening.
    The student reached back again to feel/find the pilot chute, but couldn't find it and he followed his emergency procedures: cutaway and pull the reserve.
    Just as the student began his EPs, the instructor managed to clear the pilot chute from the student's arm - potentially avoiding a complication or entanglement with the reserve deployment.
    I say that's a +1 for the instructor, well done Kauê Parra.

    AFF Instructors are a breed unto themselves. In mere seconds they can identify a problem and resolve it all with the willingness to teach someone to skydive. They save lives for the love of a sport. I’m an old skydiver who made a career out of law enforcement for over 30 years so the traits of quickly committing to an action that has life altering consequences has been part of my makeup. Two of my skydiving buddies were airport firefighters and one of them was an AFF Instructor again they are a special self sacrificing breed within this sport.

    Great job. We all need to be aware of what can happen with a lazy pull and that with a correct technique this sort of problem just wont happen.
    Not enough emphasis on correct pilot chute deployment in my humble opinion and that is a worldwide issue by the looks of it.

      Student with two tandem jumps here. Given the opportunity to pull, I found the angle difficult which decreased my pulling strength. I gave it another try and with help from my instructor, pulled the pilot chute. He let me know that just those few seconds had cost us some altitude. Wanting to continue with this sport, I'm also considering that I might not have the time and resources necessary to get it right -- and it's not something that I want to get half right half the time.

    • @swoopmj
      @swoopmj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jazz4asahel My comment was made as a general comment regarding emphasis on the correct way to deploy the pilot chute, not a criticism of you the student in this situation. Your body position was good given the minimal experience and I say keep going, at the end of the day we have back up in the form of emergency procedures and AADs.
      Moving onto your own gear means this will become less of an issue and with experience the deployment becomes clean and automatic. You have probably reached that point already, but for others getting into the sport, in the first 20 or so jumps do practice touches in free fall, maybe 2 or 3 while you have plenty of altitude, the goal being to maintain a good body position with you hand on the handle, the left hand maintaining a good stable belly to earth attitude with the help of leg position to avoid pitching forward or lateral movement which can cause a less than optimal deployment. The AFF instructor is not always going to be there.

    Ah had to pause it cause I swore the chute just went up and away, I was correct he for sure cutaway.... seeing it from the instructors view sucks he cut away, but if it where me (which I'd hope not as chucking the pilot chute isnt that hard to do) but possible anything can happen like this to anyone, I would have done the same thing and pulled reserve.... good emerg procedures as said in previous comments :) knock on wood I've not had any malfunctions in my 91 jumps so far, but I'm ready if it happens to save my life :)

      The student realizing his parachute wasn't deploying, pulled his cut away handle detaching his main parachute. That way if his main was out but not deploying it will not become tangled with the reserve parachute when he pulled the handle to deploy his reserve. The instructor at the same time unstuck the pilot chute that was supposed to pull the main parachute out of the container during deployment. The student cut away and was going for his reserve handle but did not get to it before a break away line called an RSL (Reserve Static line) Attached to the main, triggered the deployment of the reserve. Good thing too because if he had deployed his reserve without loosing his main it would have been tangled, opening the door for several other problems. Here is a video of me and my instructor doing a Mr. Bill. after I got my skydiving licens. th-cam.com/video/VNtWprh1CG0/w-d-xo.html

      @Savage Rice Cake On AFF Levels 1,2 and 3, there are 2 instructors. One instructor on each side. Throwing the pilot shoot is not an issue while there is an instructor on the right side. Even though it has risks, the AFF instructors are trained for those risks I believe.

    • @alexcampack

    Awesome job by the instructor, but I disagree with what everyone else says about the student. That was piss poor. Maybe it was bad training. His technique for deploying the pilot chute is terrible. You pull the pilot chute, get it away from your body with an outward rotation (palm facing up) and THEN release so it doesn't get tangled on your arm. He released immediately after grabbing it.

  • @TheFlyingKiwiNZ

  • @johnnyz681
    @johnnyz681 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Now can you imagine if you on the other side of the student?Most of the action happens on the “other side”
    I think 🤔 there is a good reason why most of the dz’s have right side operation.

    • @joshuamann2171
      @joshuamann2171 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends. I have seen pilot chutes get tangled in the camera gear attached to the instructors helmet when the instructor is on the right side just like it did the students wrist. Also depending on what stage of training the student was in, he didn't look like he needed an instructor to keep hands on him. So it might have been random the instructor ended up on the students left side.

      Doesn't matter. If anything doesn't feel right with the main. ANYTHING. You go straight to your cutaway and reserve. It's easy to criticize when you have a different view. But you never take the chance if something doesn't feel right. Nothing is guessed or chanced when you jump. If your not 100% sure dump it and use the reserve. Why I never judge someone who cuts away even if I don't see something. Because "they" knew something didn't feel right.

  • @olsky2627

    The instructor was on the left side. Was it on purpose? I am a conservator and I think the rush to push an AFF student through curriculum does not do good. Maybe a throw-away pilot shute saves a few jumps, but this increases the probability of similar excesses, check this group further. I knew one guy who lost his Just AFF student (totally). I read his incident report. Sorry to say but it was a lot of BS about the weather and briefing. A transition from a spring-loaded to a throw-away pilot shute takes one-two jumps but it significantly reduces a chance to write an incident report.

    We gonna ignore the fact the student cut his main loose and deployed his reserve when he didn't feel the main deploy?
