I'll add: as an American "last of the summer wine" was one of my favorites, "goode neighbors," "fawlty towers" "are you being served", all fantastic britcoms, many American fans here, ❤❤❤
I’m constantly amazed by the sheer number of movies coming out that, regardless if they turn out to be good or bad, I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in seeing 😐 I think that helped get me into collecting old movies on physical media: the choices are vast & varied, and you already _know_ there’s amazing titles out there instead of just _hoping_ the studios grace us with something decent… you just have to go out and find it. Thrill of the hunt and all that 🙂
Honestly I think Alien has one last good entry left in it, I enjoy some of the comics a lot even if a little cheesy. I just don’t know what direction the series is headed.
This year has had some goodies! Nice to hear you guys discussing some. Also if it's not on your radar already, I recommend Stormquest for the Dark Corners treatment! It's one of the Argentinean sword and sorcery cycle. Like Amazons if it was made for literally no money, and was completely embarrassing (and either charmless, or endearing!). And if you can find it, O Apostolo (The Apostle) is a dark stop motion fantasy from Galicia, that's tailor-made for a streaming review. Provided it's streaming anywhere of course, haha
I think a lot of the things people don't like about Nosferatu are the things I do like about it; I found it very entertaining just as a vampire film. That's all I really wanted it to be and I found the atmosphere, visuals and over-the-top nature entertaining. I agree that it the original doesn't need a remake and that's why I don't care that this isn't really that remake and just had fun watching it. I think if you go in with a checklist in your head you won't like it. Alien Romulus I really enjoyed as well. It has dumb stuff in it but I think there is so much more to like about it.
Minor correction. I believe Pretorius said he grew his little experiments from SEED, not from seeds. Given how openly odd Whale meant the character to be...um...yeah, Pretorius probably did.
Easy solution to keeping track of the movies I seen in a given year. For the past 8 years, I create title lists on IMDb on the movies Ive seen at the movie theater. Last year, I been to the movie theater 74 times to see 72 separate films.
The tech in phones is amazing.... however a great cinematographer can get great pictures out of shitty camera. But add the huge amounts spent on lighting. set, costume etc and fact that it is shot on a heavily rigged out iphone with a lenses that that probably cost 10s of thousands it is no longer quite as impressive. The first film was partly shot on a Canon XL-1 which is not even a high def camera let alone the 4k available on the iPhone.
That true about Tom Cruise and Keanu's age? Now we need a Last of the Summer Wine reboot with an armoured bathtub going down a hill. Last of the Summer Dies!
"Smile 2", "Immaculate" and, I guess, "Alien Romulus" were the ones I enjoyed last year. I agree with you about the Alien movie: it looked fantastic but it had few "groaners" in it.
Hated The Substance after all the hype. Apparently the one dimension character motivation seems to be enough for modern audiences. The Substance was like watching a 141-minute music video (think Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction” playing on repeat) with added blood. Demi Moore is a vain TV ⭐ , erm... that's it. But Dennis Quaid was so underused and the best thing in it. The filmmaker just chucked a thousand buckets of gore at it to distract from its lack of, err… substance. Btw the alien development is only a few hours in the original.
It occurred to me that the state of film is so awful right now, when something mediocre like The Substance comes out, it's considered great. We've been settling for less.
@toddboughn5168 I have a feeling they're incapable of making anything vaguely entertaining nowadays . It breaks my ❤️ driving past an empty cinema car park everyday. Not good.
I had mixed feelings about the new Nosferatu. I did like the cinematography and there are some good sequences in it (particularly liked the scene with Renfield / Knock and the pigeon). On the other hand, the dialogue and performances felt a bit overwrought and hammy (I had a similar complaint about The Northman). I was also a bit disappointed by how closely it stuck to the source material - I had hoped he'd try something fresher. The sheer familiarity of the story was a bit of a drag, which was odd because I thought the pacing felt a bit rushed. I like gothic stories where you can wallow in the atmosphere, but this just felt like it was in too much of a hurry to move the plot along. Overall, while I thought it was an improvement on The Northman, it was still nowhere near as good as either The Witch or The Lighthouse.
I thought Jurassic World was an absolute mockery ( and I'm not even even a fan of the original Jurassic Park ), that was like watching the McDonald's of cinema, zero artistry, 100% marketing
Don't care what anyone else says.I liked Driveway Dolls. I had the theater all to myself and could laugh as loud as I wanted, My fav of 2024 (that I've seen) is A Real Pain. I liked A Complete Unknown, The Order, and Coup de Chance. Rumours and Longlegs were enjoyable enough for one viewing. Megalopolis was so bad it was good (and the most fun I had in theaters in years). Monkey Man was forgettable, The Bikeriders tried too hard to be Goodfellas on wheels that it failed entirely, and Late Night With the Devil was lousy (critics loved that but hated Driveway Dolls?) Other than that I was able to plenty of old movies on the big screen including a screeing of The Pit and the Pendulum as part of a Roger a Corman tribute series. Also for Halloween a screening of spooky themed Fletcher cartoons. I'll start 2025 by seeing a screening of Robert Altman's Nashville and them The Brutalist. I think I'll skip Nosferatu.
I loved the premise of Late Night with the Devil, but it couldn't stick to it own concept. The idea we were watching a doc plus lost footage and all lost footage had perfect sound and just managed to catch all the plot points... then at the end it abandons the doc premise totally.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one to find Nosferatu unintentionally funny and much of the dialogue - cheesy in a rotten moldy way. Scenes with the two very young children bordered on parody.
Yeah, same here. I was stoked to see the new Nosferatu and came away feeling distinctly underwhelmed and disappointed. I wouldn't know where to start with this one but this film just didn't work for me on a multitude of levels. If this is supposedly Egger's best film to date, how bad are the three that preceded it?! I dread to think.
Totally agree on your nodding to laugh. During the strange comedy that is Nosferratu. Forgive my spelling, this is just a fast msg really. But kids today will think this is the classic and that is sad. As we know kids now are stupid and dont seek out he originals of anything as they deem it too old. TMan, Those kids that think this is grat? I Bet not a single one has seen the Hertzog version or the ABSOLUTE MASTERPICE of Murnau.
Well, with over 85 percent Rotten Tomatoes approval by critics, "Those kids that think this is grat" are certanly not allone. Also it's spelled Herzog and Nosferatu.
Love your channel and avidly watch every video. I have to disagree with your takes on Civil War. It was violence without meaning. The politics or cultural context of the war were completely absent. When a main character dies, the others are so intent on getting the story they offer no succor, don’t even check to see if she is alive. Such a disappointment from a director with some eerie thought provoking films.
I know we all have our different takes and tastes, but your opinion on Nosferatu comes off as frankly childish and a bit laughable. You seem to come from a very bizarre angle regarding the film (as if Eggers is trying to somehow destroy the legacy?). I know some people here seem to parrot your views and won’t challenge you on your takes, but this was one of your worst takes in a while (this whole video is peppered with them).
@ absolutely will do. I love your retrospective and old horror analysis videos (some of the best) but I think we have completely different takes on “modern” movies.
If the original movie is irrelevant then why use the name? It's legitimate to compare and expect something to be done with it. It's like putting your national flag on a sack of sand. I also don't understand why you'd call the host childish without giving any substance to your own take.
@@tamlandipper29 don't remember saying anything about the original movie being irrelevant, maybe you should check my comment more carefully before rushing in to comment. I called his opinion and reasoning childish, not him.
@@LordRezo Thanks. Red Letter Media, had a similar take on the laughter, although they spoke about it being during the erotic scenes where Robin's issues were with the dialogue and performances.
I'll add: as an American "last of the summer wine" was one of my favorites, "goode neighbors," "fawlty towers" "are you being served", all fantastic britcoms, many American fans here, ❤❤❤
It's always a pleasure to see a new Dark Corners Reviews video pop up in my notifications. 🖖🏼💀
this guy is getting each day resembling Christopher Lee :)
With a subtle dab of John Cleese
Sonic 3 was the movie I had the most fun watching this year, but I grew up with those games.
Your take on Nosferatu makes me want to see it now.

As far as I'm concerned,
The ALIEN series should've
ended after the 3rd film.
Honestly I think Alien has one last good entry left in it, I enjoy some of the comics a lot even if a little cheesy. I just don’t know what direction the series is headed.

Megalopolis was the best bad movie that I watched in the last 12 months. Conclave is a masterpiece. 'Nuff said.
whole audience muffling their laughter throughout Megalopolis. The most fun I had at the milieus in years,.
Minor correction. I believe Pretorius said he grew his little experiments from SEED, not from seeds. Given how openly odd Whale meant the character to be...um...yeah, Pretorius probably did.
Ralph Fiennes and Demi Moore
RULED the screen this year.

Good idea. Thanks
Who would have thought 2025 would be the year we get a reboot of 'Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders' ? 🐵
I thought the scene in Romulus where the alien saves the hero from falling so she could get implanted I thought was rather creative
Caddilacs and Dinosaurs! The comic got an RPG, it can become a movie!
28 years later is filmed entirely with a iPhone apparently.

Bill Owen (Compo) was 59 in the first series of the sitcom. Tom Cruse is now 62 and Keanu is 60.
Mel Gibson should've
directed FURIOSA.
"Smile 2", "Immaculate" and, I guess, "Alien Romulus" were the ones I enjoyed last year. I agree with you about the Alien movie: it looked fantastic but it had few "groaners" in it.

From The World Of John Wick might as well have been titled Jane Wick!

I saw The Undead at Un-Alpine Un-Valley
Why did you see it twice? Was it that good?
The Substance, best film of 24. Followed by Civil War, late night with the devil, Romulus, 100s of beavers. It was a good year
Says a lot about creativity in cinema when most of the films discussed are remakes reboots sequels and rip offs

I guess I'll go watch conclave now.
woohoo! Undead!

We cut nearly 40 mins from this video. So a chair would have probably been a good idea.
