I was 20 yrs old in the fall of1984. I surprised my 18 yr old date and flew from Wash. D.C. on the shuttle to N.Y. City. One of the things we did was to go see Dreamgirls on Broadway. We had great seats at the orchestra level. Her performance of this song actually made the hair on the back of my neck rise. The audience needed about ten seconds of silence to gather our emotions before the standing ovation.

Saw her in the Broadway production of Dreamgirls. When she sang this song it was the first time I saw a real show stopper on a Broadway stage. The other time was The Boy From Oz original cast with Hugh Jackman.
It was also another Broadway first in that it remains today the only show-stopper number in Broadway history to close the first act with a standing ovation! Was just incredible to be a part of that you had no choice but to shoot up right off your ass in ovation!
I watched a recording of the original show and despite the terrible quality of the video her performance moved me to not only tears, but all out sobs. The raw emotion and pain was palpable. Anyone who has ever had their heart ripped out can relate to this song. Such talent and grace !

No-one seems to realise that 80's music would've been disliked by many people growing up in the 40's, 40's early 'pop' music being disliked by people born at the turn of the century etc. etc. I like the majority of music from pretty much all eras but I just don't get why people hate the change in music over time. Nikki Smith I don't get the hate for whatever the current trend for music is at the time. No-one seems to realise that 80's music would've been disliked by many people growing up in the 40's, 40's early 'pop' music being disliked by people born at the turn of the century etc. etc.
I like the majority of music from pretty much all eras but I just don't get why people hate the change in music over time. There's so much music out there at the moment that it's so easy to just see what's at number 1 and gloss over the huge catalog of music that's out there.
