How to Fix a Propane Tank Low or No Pressure

  • This advise was given to me and done by the local refilling station. Try disconnecting the tank for a couple mins. 1st. If that doesn't work, take the tank back to the refilling station and have it checked. It could also be a bad regulator.

My dog and I have been freezing for days. Spent the last of my cash on a tank swap and when I got home nothing I hooked the tank to would stay lit. Tried numerous official and unofficial "fixes" and got exactly nowhere. Watched this about an hour ago and now we are nice and toasty. We thank you greatly for passing this on kind sir.

I had a problem with an exchange tank on my grill. So I hooked up my weed burner which uses the inner threads and it worked. Then I hooked it back up to the grill and it worked

DO NOT USE THE TANK SWAP OR EXCHANGE you are getting rip off! you are only getting 14 to 15.5 pounds of propane in that 20 pound tank! Find a place that will refill your tank Big R here in Colorado will do it but call a propane dealer and ask if they refill the smaller tanks. The going rate is over $20 with tax on and exchange tank I get a full 20 pounds for a litte over $15 with tax.

I had a new propane tank that would not work . . . burners would not light. My local BBQ grill store said to burb the tank (essentially turning off all the burners and turn off the tank, then disconnect the regulator from the tank, wait 30 seconds and then reconnect the regulator) and still nothing. I even spoke with Viking and they said my 20 year old stainless steel grill needed a new regulator and manifold ($425 . . . .ouch!). Found your video and thought why not try your suggestion before shelling out money to Viking. Bleed the tank for about 2.5 minutes, tapped the regulator a couple of times just for good measure and the darn thing fired right up. I'm not saying I did not believe your video (you know their is so much stuff on the internet), but I was definitely pleasantly surprised. Great video and even better advise!

That hissing just sounds wrong and gives me major panic attacks. I did it away from my house and closer to my idiot neighbor’s place. Worked like a charm for both my propane tank and my panic attacks, but my neighbor is still an idiot.

So I too had this problem. I take my tank to Costco to refill. The attendant told me dirt builds up inside (??) and that I should just bang it on the ground or just get a new tank. After putting 3$ in (it was still mostly full) I took it home and had the same thing happen again. Thus, finding your video seems to have fixed the problem. Hopefully for good. I use mine in a fire pit and stand heater. No fun when they stop working on a cold morning or evening! Thank you!

THANK YOU!!!!! This solved my propane gas logs problem and was going to try this, since this is exactly what the licensed refillers do at beginning of cooling season and later to refill faster ... they told me. The worse tanks were the 40# tall boys, the only ones having fuel sitting in them all hot, humid summer. Since the 30# summer empty ones filled & burned all fuel & the 40s did not empty fully (1/3 left by weight) guessed it was NOT regulator and even placed a heated gel pack on it when the 40# flamed out, so that trick rules reg. out. No electric, fires, etc. around, I only "purged" about 60 seconds "to get the humidity out" in this 16-27F weather. Presto chango it now works beautifully as in years past. Also ordered a couple of cheap heating pads whose specs. say they don't get too hot b/c am too cheap to buy $100 propane tank heating sleeves on Google. Again, THANK YOU for taking the time for posting ... and risking the slings & arrows of slope heads on social media, not grounded from any real research.

I did ALL the regulator stuff that the naysayers were calling the "true" fix (unhook the regulator, let sit, hook back up to tank, SLOWLY open tank, blah blah...) and yes, that can be a fix if that's the issue. For me that didn't work this time around. Tried this move, as posted in the video (but only left it open for like 45 sec - 1 min.), and it worked immediately. Sadly I didn't find this until the next afternoon and had to cook a couple steaks on the cast iron, but at least I'll be good to go tonight! Thanks for the post!!

My regulator was not stuck (I tried it on an extra bottle) and it worked fine. I tried a different regulator and hose on the "bad" bottle and still no luck. I found the screw you pointed out, opened it for less than 3 seconds and voila...it's working again. It saved me a trip to Walmart who I'm sure would have replaced my "bad" bottle. Thanks. The negative comments seem to be coming from people who are confusing a safety feature on the regulator and not a problem with the propane tank valve.

I even tested to make sure regulator wasn’t faulty I hooked up the old tank again and it worked but full tank didn’t which makes me believe the regulator isn’t faulty it’s the valve on the tank or the tank was over filled a little too much

Thanks for the suggestion, however after researching more on TH-cam, problem seems to be the regular on the line going to the grill, NOT THE TANK. You have to let the regulator(big silver thing on the fuel line) reset its safety, whereby it thinks there is a leak by flooding the line too quickly with propane. Anyhow, I found these titles helpful on youtube; Low Flow - the full story and How to reset your regulator. Key is whenever you open your tank.....do it very slowly so it feeds the fuel line without a pressure surge. ALSO, when shutting down the grill, shut off the burner knobs vs. shutting off the tank THEN the burner knobs. All this time I thought bleeding all the propane out of the line was the way to go, but it actually causes the problem. Knowledge is power.

    • @popup1959
      @popup1959  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Knowledge IS power. Thanks a million Walter for researching this matter. Unfortunately, this was the information given to me by the person filling the tank. Goes to show, don't always take advice from those who claim to know. He doesn't work there anymore.

I have no gas flow with the tank hooked up, or not.
Going to try popup's pressure vent trick.
If that doesn't work will return the tank for a new one. I know it is not the regulator.

I bought one of those gauges with a needle that reads green full. Yellow low and empty. Red. But even when I know tank is empty the gauge shows still full. So I released air until gushed showed low propane. When I go have it filled will it still work?

I get my tanks filled at the one and only place in town. Seems every time I go to get them filled it's a new person doing it. Makes me nervous. This last time a girl over filled one tank and the regulator kept freezing up. I had to loosen the bleeder screw until liquid stopped coming out to finally get it to work. They rely to much on the over fill valve inside the tank . When they are turning on a pump and forcing propane in the tank it looks to me like they could still force extra propane in the tank.

Thanks Popup, I was able to fix it using the bleeding valve, like you showed. But I only let it bleed for less than 30 seconds at full blast.
But I gotta tell you, your videos would get a lot more likes than dislikes if you limit your rambling. When we people click on problem-solving videos we expect to get a solution as quickly as possible. Like in this case, I had friends coming and I was sweating like a pig trying to fix the issue. You might have great stories about your truck, the cookout you had yesterday, the weather and so on, but anything that is not related to the problem typically annoys the viewers. Other than that, great tip.

Thanks for the video but turns out the opd valve or plunger wasn't engaged well enough when hand screwing the grill connections to the propane tank so a quarter turn with pliers did the trick.

So you just let it run for two minutes and then screw it shut. After that it works? I got a refill from the store and it hasn't worked since I got it but it's full. I'm assuming this is the problem?
