January 1961, a 10 year old kid was up late, out in the shop, listening to 'Meisterbrow Showcase Theater' clear channel, I heard Etta, i called from Iowa to Chicago, I wanted to talk to the DJ, they said 'no problem'. I said, I want to hear more of Etta Jones, he said , me too, he played the whole album side.
I truly believe Etta Jones is THE most underrated Jazz singer. Her vocals are superb. Sarah Vaughan remains my top choice but if I were thrown on an island with an ipod consisting only of Etta Jones, I''d take the long vacation in stride.
The most underrated artist of any genre. There are a lot of hidden, incredibly talented artists out there who didn’t make it bigger for whatever reason, but I personally think this lady tops the list.
Back in 2000 my sister and I went to NY for a long weekend, ( we live in uk) and we went to Greenwich Village and saw both Etta and Huston play in a tiny Jazz place. It was my first time to hear both and they blew me away. After the show they came and spoke to me and my sister. We felt so good walking out from there. They truly made our weekend. Simply Fab both of them and yes I agree very underrated both of them.
Etta Jones; a wonderful, wonderful singer, that I came to discover here on TH-cam. Every few months, I come back to listen to Ms. Jones, a gem amongst singers; really!
The greatest rendition, I agree with previous comments, I could sit in this jazz club forever, a great group of musicians from vocalist to bass, every moment enjoyable! 🎷
If she and Houston didn't get their due in the heyday of Jazz vocalists, they did have a hella, hella run in the 80's-90's. Perhaps delayed appreciation is a better term. They were pretty big in the last decade-plus they performed together. Deserved kudos in their golden years....
I saw Eta two times in Jamaica at the Ocho Rios jazz Festival and she won my heart. She sang like she alone could, her style, her presence was like no one else that I can remember. I can't forget talking to her after the show, that was extra extra special.
I Love Ms. Jones' rendition of this tune. After I heard her rendition of "If I Had You" I was hooked. I haven't heard anyone sing that song quite like her. Unforgettable Lady with an Unforgettable Voice.
This is a favorite of mine that I also used to perform. Etta sings it with her remarkable style that no one could imitate! She and Houston Person worked together for about 30 years, that's why they are so good together. And Stan Hope on the piano, the rest of her group -- just fabulous, which comes from performing together for so long.!
I also had the privilege of hearing Etta Jones and Houston Person in Seattle many years ago at Italian supper club near the University if Washington. I invited them to my table for a drink. It was awesome . I wish someone would post "Please Mr. person."
I see pictures! Her phrasing is awesome init. I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! X I just discovered Etta, she was sent from the Gods! I totally agree with DRWJD, why is this the first time I'm hearing her, fuck me I'm 41! Love it , feel it, groove it, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
She shouldn't have had to stand in anyone's shadow. She had many of the best qualities of her contemporaries as well as her own distinct style, and yet never really broke through. It's a real shame.
I'm back to hear Etta Jones, a favorite, sing this song again, it reminds me of a train-trip I took under the same circumstances years ago, and hearing it again is a painful memory of that day but I also sang it performing so I try to remember that happy time instead!

Etta Jones was the closest to Billie Holiday of the dozens of pretenders. In fact, on the day of her death in Oct. 2001 her last recording was released, on which she "channels" Lady Day on "Fine and Mellow." Sacred ground, and only Etta has any business standing on it.
It's obvious she was inspired by Dinah Washington. I like that she took the best of Dinah Washington like her phrasing and diction and made it her own.
The most underrated great jazz singer, despite a recorded career that was 1944-2001 (October, when she released a Billie Holiday tribute album the day of Etta's death). In the 40s she was with Bud Johnson, in the 50s and 60s it was Oliver Nelson and Jug (her best period), then in the 70s to the end, Houston Person. I caught her toward the end at Chicago's Jazz Showcase--not a good P.A. for vocalists.
i wrote this a long time ago, about something i read, now all that's posted is this line, leads to nothing. it was in defence of a classic overlooked underrated singer, as others have posted.
Just wanna add, besides what I said below, that this is a pretty boring Jazz standard...I mean, it doesn't have a lotta dynamism to the tune itself...yet Etta made it sound fabulous....they really cooked on it ! That is the sign of a real creative talent !
Etta Jones one the most overlooked and underated jazz singers. She had great phrasing and timing.

Listen, I just discovered Etta Jones and now think my whole life before that was a waste 😂
Etta singing behind the beat. so cool.
She just swings so fucking hard! 😍

what a concert that was! very lucky you.
the Blue Note
One of my favorite female singers by far! So excellent, so underrated. Sometimes popularity has nothing to do with talent.
Yes, more often than we'd like to think unfortunately.
Etta Jones; a wonderful, wonderful singer, that I came to discover here on TH-cam.
Every few months, I come back to listen to Ms. Jones, a gem amongst singers; really!
I think about Etta Jones whenever I think of great music.
She had my vote after I first heard her sing " Don't go to Strangers."
Sylvia Carlson Yes me too
@@Brazconj Me too
Wonderful jazz vocalist....she places the lyrics against the rhythm line in just the right place and make the song hers.
I love Etta Jones! She really speaks to me, love her rich voice, love her talent. She knew jazz so well.
Etta sure could sing.
The greatest rendition, I agree with previous comments, I could sit in this jazz club forever, a great group of musicians from vocalist to bass, every moment enjoyable! 🎷

AAAHHH ETTA YOU MY QUEEN IM GLAD I FOUND YOOUUUUU
Wow, that was awesome! And I just heard Ella and Dinah sing it! Lady Etta, you are now my best friend!
I saw Eta two times in Jamaica at the Ocho Rios jazz Festival and she won my heart. She sang like she alone could, her style, her presence was like no one else that I can remember. I can't forget talking to her after the show, that was extra extra special.
I think when I die, I'd just like to walk into this club.
jazzguy2k same here, what a great lineup and atmosphere, I could listen to this concert over and over....
I Love Ms. Jones' rendition of this tune. After I heard her rendition of "If I Had You" I was hooked. I haven't heard anyone sing that song quite like her. Unforgettable Lady with an Unforgettable Voice.
A great singer and a beautiful person. Love her!
Roma Alexanderplatz jazz club -- Grazie Etta sei Fantastica ..!!

All great tributes to Etta Jones here, and all dead on.
This is a real artist
Truly one of the best...

great jazz singer.....good version of Johnny Hartman's classic
Someone did post "Don't Go to Strangers," but it was removed by the record company. Time to get her definitive version back on TH-cam.

Yes, that's Houston Person on tenor.
@caponsacchi not to mention houston person is highly underated as well
Is that Houston Person on tenor?? Man can he play!

@Whatisthescore
What do you mean?
Does anyone know what album, CD this was from?
This a video from a concert at a Japanese jazz club. Not an album or CD
Would love to know who is accompanying on piano and bass. Great rendition!
Peter Martin Weiss - Bass
Stan Hope at the paino
Hard swinging. Etta makes me think of a female Lou Rawls with the bluesy quality of her voice.
Magic ❤
Is that Houston Person on tenor?
I really like this one..Although "Just friends" was not one of her best songs...
i wrote this a long time ago, about something i read, now all that's posted is this line, leads to nothing.

Who are the players in the band?
Stan Hope piano
Peter Martin Weiss bass
Cecil Brooks III drums

Timless
Dudes, it's Etta JAMES.
Barry Levine no no this is Etta jones!
Are you sure this is Etta?
timing to "beat the band"!
That bassist is really bouncing!
He always bounces like that -- unnecessary, and a bit distracting.
M.J. Leger enjoying the music that’s all! Who wouldn’t
